Game Recap for Show #6954, 2014-12-04

2014 Kids Week game 4.

CONTESTANTS
Olivia Woods, a 12-year-old from Cincinnati, Ohio
Courtney Jones, a 12-year-old from Largo, Maryland
Zane Ice, a 12-year-old from West Palm Beach, Florida

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome. I'm sure you've noticed that one of the main differences between our kids week shows and our regular fare, aside from the age factor, of course, is the element of emotion. As talented as they are, these very bright young people, haven't yet had too many experiences in life where they were not the winners. And that can be pretty tough on some of them. Nevertheless, we hope that their visit to Jeopardy! winds up being viewed by them as a positive one. Olivia, Courtney, and Zane, welcome, good luck. Let's go to work. Here are the categories for the first round of play today...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS

(Zane: I don't know.)

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK

Courtney: $2,000
Olivia: $400

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: In his introduction of Olivia Woods a few moments ago, at the beginning of our program, Johnny Gilbert said that Olivia would like to be a preschool teacher because "she loves working with little kids." Olivia, I'd like to know your definition of "little kids."

[Laughter]

Alex: You're all of 4'3" tall, am I right?

Olivia: Yes, sir.

Alex: So, who do you work with?

Olivia: Um, mostly little kids as in toddlers, 2 to 5 years old.

Alex: What do you like best about working with those?

Olivia: I like how imaginative they are and how just--they generally are pretty happy, um, and they're--I just think they're a lot of fun to hang out with.

Alex: You're gonna be a good teacher, I predict.

Alex: Courtney Jones is a 12-year-old from Largo, Maryland. In terms of good deeds, you founded an annual kind of day. Tell us about that.

Courtney: So, in 2011, I think it was, someone very close to me was diagnosed with breast cancer. So, at my school, it was about, I think, a year after they had finished chemotherapy and we had--it was October and we decided to--to do an annual Pink Day where grades 4, 5, and 6, would all wear pink clothing. And they go to, like, a lecture. And they have breast cancer survivors that come and talk to us.

Alex: So you made people more aware of it?

Courtney: Yes.

Alex: Good for you, young lady.

Alex: Zane Ice is an 11-year-old from West Palm Beach. 11 years old, already has participated in an engineer competition. What was that all about?

Zane: Well, it was an annual competition from the county. And I competed with a friend to make an--carton for an egg that would--when dropped from 30 and then 50 feet would not crack the egg.

Alex: And were you successful?

Zane; I was successful, but I got--

Alex: What was the secret?

Zane: The secret was we used lightweight, um, Styrofoam that would, uh, make the egg--that would soften the fall of the egg.

Alex: Yeah, cushion it.

Zane: Right.

Alex: Good for you. You're a success already. My gosh.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
IT'S A MYSTERY $800: "Beautiful Redemption" is the finale of this paranormal mystery series set in a small South Carolina town

REMEMBER THE PAST? $1600: On January 1, 2014 Latvia became the 18th country to adopt this currency

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Zane: $16,400
Courtney: $14,601
Olivia: $1,000

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
TOY BRANDS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place. Shore's Conjecture.
Zane: Wager $12,803 to cover Courtney, but no more than $14,399 so as not to fall behind Olivia's doubled score. If you're a fan of shoretegic wagering, you might risk $10,803.
Courtney: Since you're within 4/5ths of Zane's score, you should wager between $3,599 (venusian) and $11,003 (martian), beating Zane's maximum safe bet of the difference between your scores.
Olivia: Too bad for you, Olivia, your score is less than Zane's score minus Courtney's score. Unless they both commit an egregious wagering error, you've no hope of moving into first place. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
This product's website has stated, "Helping imagination take shape for over 50 years!" & "Fun to (use), not to eat"

Courtney: $14,601 - $5,399 = $9,202 (What is Mattel?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Zane: $16,400 + $12,803 = $29,203 (What is Play-Doh?) (Winner: $29,203)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $13,200

GAME DYNAMICS

My Two Cents is that if I had a weird last name like Ice, I would want to give my son as conventional a two-syllable name as possible. E.g., Randy, Patrick, Alex, and not an unusual one or one ending in an N sound like Gavin, Marlin, or Zane. I think Seth Plate would agree. (Who remembers where Seth is from?)

What a mix of contestants. We got a rare peek behind their podiums and ought now have a better understanding why the three contestants are usually so equal in height. The middle contestant seems to have left puberty behind a while ago, while the right contestant is barely HALF the height of Big Bird! (Zane is nearly as short.)

Gamewise, it was an evenly matched contest between two contestants. The questions were slightly harder than yesterday. This pop culture stuff that the writers assume is of interest to 12-year-olds really kills me. Who the hell wants to study the names of the Jonas Brothers before going on Jeopardy!?

FJ was an instaget for me.

Zane played great! He chose a $1,000 clue to begin the game, which Courtney got correct, but he did a good job after that. I got 43 clues correct including Derek Jeter, wrestle, Rose Parade, Carlsbad Caverns, Mercury, rain gauge, English horn, and FJ.

Agree, Zane Ice was a pretty badass name.

I have NHO any of those Lego lines (yet another rare instance of $200 being my only miss in a category!) or Beautiful Creatures. Also didn't know Maze Runner is a series, or what sport Jeter played. Much less annoying was blanking on both Kristen Stewart and Kevin Jonas.

NIMH was my only get in "N"tertainment. Yet more Nickelodeon shows that I've never heard of, but I don't think I've seen a live action show of theirs since iCarly (my sister watched it, OK?), and the only things I've watched on Nick period in the past 5+ years are Penguins of Madagascar (so underrated) and Sanjay & Craig.

Remember the Past? gives me my first 0/5 in this week. None of the clues clicked at all for me.

I remembered "Fun to play with, not to eat" in old Play-Doh ads as a child, so this FJ! was an instaget.

Not as cool as Chile Ice, a kid I knew in seventh grade.
I was happy to see that Olivia was shorter than I was when I was on. Short person solidarity! I was not so pleased with the fact that a certain newspaper article spoiled Olivia's performance.
All in all, a very enjoyable game. I even nailed a Toy Brands FJ! Thanks, Robert Munsch!

Did they really expect 12-year-olds to know Beautiful Creatures?

Agreed. I'll have to use it in a future short story or novel. A cool name, cool kid.

Not much to say for tonight's episode, except poor Olivia seemed frozen.

What all did Alex say at the beginning of the show? I only caught the very end of it, but assumed it was something in regard to yesterday's contestant who didn't make it to FJ.
