Alex: Thanks, Johnny. Hi, everyone. Jen told me at the end of yesterday's program, "I wasn't sure about the final." She came up with the correct response but didn't know, it was an educated guess. And it paid off, and I hope it set the tone for a lot of positive stuff for this entire week. Penny and Mikki, good to have you with us, and good luck. Here we go into the Jeopardy! round. CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: There is something in Mikki Gibson's recent past that I want to hear about that has to do with your honeymoon and a ritual. Tell 'em.

Mikki: Yes. So my husband and I honeymooned in the Orkney Islands, which are off the north coast of Scotland and there are lots of ancient artifacts there, among them this huge ring of standing stones called the Ring of Brodgar. We were in a little tour group, and the tour guide told us that there's a local legend that if we ran three times counterclockwise around the ring, which was about a kilometer, that we would be expecting a baby within a year. We're not sure if he was pulling our leg or not, but we did it, and it was fun, and it worked.

Alex: Well, in addition to running around three times, there's something else you have to do. I know. I know these things.
[Laughter]

Alex: Penny Reid from Bloomington, Indiana, went on a camping trip, was about to learn how to protect the camp from being ransacked by bears, and while you were learning this, what happened?

Penny: Well, we came back to the campsite, and my mom was there, and we said, "See any bears?" And she was just hysterical and we looked around, and all the coolers were on the ground and the whole place was torn up, and while we had been learning how to safeguard our campsite, it had been ransacked by bears.

[Laughter]

Alex: Great stories today!

Alex: Jen Jabaily Blackburn from Massachusetts. Now, here's a young lady who's really sharp and understands her strengths. Your second job, when you were in college --you quit it, because you realized you could earn more money doing what?

Jen: Playing trivia.

Alex:
Where?

Jen: In bars.

Alex: And did it work out?

Jen: Um, I think it worked a lot of the time.

Alex: So there are a lot of people who put up money in trivia games in bars.

Jen: Worst-case scenario, we get free beer.

[Laughter]

Alex: That's not a bad worst-case scenario. All right, Mikki has command of the board, and she makes the next selection as we continue.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Penny found the Daily Double on the 20th clue. Jen had $800, Penny had $3,800, and Mikki was at $1,200. Penny wagered $2,000.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
TIME FOR ART $1000: When talking about great Trecento art, like the example seen here, Trecento means this period
(Mikki: What is medieval?)
(Alex: We need more than that. Gotta be specific.)
(Jen: What is 13th century?)
...
(Alex: Both of you are hovering around the correct response. Trecento refers to the [*], which means the 14th century.)

ON THE NOSE $200: Though piercing wasn't common among them, the name of this Native American tribe means "pierced nose"
(Jen: What is Perce Nez?)
[Originally ruled correct; ruling rescinded before the Daily Double]

CELEBRITY NAME RECOGNITION $800: We "sez" that the middle of Martin Scorsese's last name is not "sayz" & that he directed this 1973 Harvey Keitel "road" movie
[End-of-round signal sounds]

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Penny: $6,600
Mikki: $1,600
Jen: $1,400

I seem to be back in regular form as I had 16 and 11, with two runs (Video Games and Words About Words). Maybe Friday and Monday were just off days for me. Or maybe I'm more upbeat because I turn 28 today.

How on earth did we have LTaM with 10 clues left when there were no video clues, and only two TSes?!

Nez Perce/Perce Nez was an odd overturn.

There's a Du Pont family? John seemed like negbait for Rockefeller if you don't know the movie.

What led to Gothic on Art for $200?

Boardwalk Empire was undervalued at $200. At least ask for a Big Three show in that slot.

All but "custom" in "CU". Just couldn't get there from "toll". All but Torquemada in Europe was more of a surprise to me.

Huxley = Brave New World is the limit of my knowledge of either, but it was enough to keep me from a goose-egg in the Novels category.

Art and Nixon were my only 0/5s.

Is it just me, or are they doing the "We'll be back for FJ!, right after this" bumper almost daily now?

Elusive particle -> Higgs boson -> Higgs. Woo, instaget.

Dominant, dominant, performance.

I briefly considered if "Boson" was a name, but FJ was pretty close to instaget.

I think I said "Mrs. Pacman" instead of "Ms." I guess I just assumed they were married after one of those cutscenes...

Penny played a powerful game. I had 34 correct responses including five triple stumpers: 14th century, Mean Streets, The Turn of the Screw, Spain, and birch tree. Instaget FJ.

It is :D

Enjoyed the video game category as a "classic" gamer myself who has played most of those.

Impressive game by the new champ. Well done.

FJ was an Instaget. I've had a few of these lately, but as Han Solo once said, "Don't get cocky, kid." :D

The Sausville wife might mean Penny doesn't have a second impressive game tomorrow.

My actual FJ thought process:

Oh god, it's that Higgs boson guy! What was his name? I'm pretty sure I read about him in Mental Floss...god, just me with the names...oh wait. Higgs boson. Higgs. Who is Higgs?

Epic fail. (I still got it in time, luckily.)

I took a total guess on FJ and got it right.

Strong game by the new champ. Kristen will have her hands full tomorrow.

I was thinking about Nixon earlier when I read about Rex teaching at Whittier and then he pops up in a category.

I wish they had finished the California category instead of sticking with the celebrity one.

Penny seemed to surprise herself. Pretty sure we'll have a new winner tomorrow.

Tough J boards for me. Probably got 6R.
I was also trying to figure out whether boson is the answer (not the boardie). Settled on higgs.

Penny has Knowledge but wasn't convinced about buzzer. It can be her downfall tomorrow.

Surprised that they finished the DJ round. Too many "please"s flying around in J round. Also strange that they keep going to lowest possible value clues after minute warning.

How long has it been since a player could safely bet over 13,000 on a lock game?

Jen seemed like she was just playing for the free beer tonight. Actually, the long camera shots caught her looking kind of bewildered, like she drew a bunch of unfavorable categories.

On the DD of the photo of the big nosed monkey, it sounded like Penny added a soft C to the middle of the species name.
TenPoundHammer wrote:How on earth did we have LTaM with 10 clues left when there were no video clues, and only two TSes?!
And the interviews didn't seem terribly long either.
Six clues left covered. There's something wrong with that.

30 right.

Name (3), Art (3), Nose (1), California (2), Video (3), Words (1)
Nixon (2), TV (3), Arch (3), Fiction (3), "CU" (2), Europe (4)

Lach Trash: "Nurse Jackie", "Spain"

I could only think of Watson, but I've heard of the Higgs boson in retrospect.

Coryat: $32,800
40 R/3 W
DD: 3/3
FJ: Instaguess
LT: Nurse Jackie, The Turn of the Screw
C: Gothic, Dada, splitting an infinitive
TenPoundHammer wrote:Nez Perce/Perce Nez was an odd overturn.
What was odd was Alex's crediting the response in the first place. It would be like counting a response of Footblack or Saxon-Anglo.
TenPoundHammer wrote:There's a Du Pont family? John seemed like negbait for Rockefeller if you don't know the movie.
They own half of Delaware. Also, the movie is based on a true story, so you could know either the movie or the murder.
Category 13 wrote:On the DD of the photo of the big nosed monkey, it sounded like Penny added a soft C to the middle of the species name.
She did, but that's an acceptable alternate pronunciation.

Here's to hoping that Penny is a one-day champ!

Those of us who are old Dark Shadows fans (the Frid version) know Turn of the Screw very well, since it was the basis of more than one story arc.

And FJ was an instaget of sorts (I did initially say "Bosun" :P ) thanks to The Big Bang Theory and general news reports.
