OPENING REMARKS
Alex Trebek: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Our returning champion, Alex, has set an amazing pace on Jeopardy! Four of his five wins have been runaways. Couldn't be caught going into Final Jeopardy! So, if I can give our challengers, Nikhil and Scott, any advice, it would be this--get him early, and then try to get him late, too. Good luck to all of you. Here we go. Here are the categories in the Jeopardy! Round...

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex Trebek: Good things can happen to people who meet on the Internet. Scott Blish is a perfect example. You met your wife on the Internet.

Scott: Yes, completely at random. Uh, we met online. Uh, met in real life a week later. Were engaged a month after that, and almost four months to the day after that, we were married.

Alex Trebek: Good for you. And you stayed married for two months?

Scott: No, we're still married after 11 years. Talk to me in 11 more years, and we'll see if things are still working out.

[Laughter]

Alex Trebek: Thank you, Scott.

Alex Trebek: Nikhil Neelakantan from Richmond, Virginia. He's an operations analyst, ladies and gentlemen, who--and I don't know how to say this--perhaps is not a very good driver because he was pulled over and, I believe, ticketed for driving under the influence of...?

Nikhil: Laughter.

Alex Trebek: What?

Nikhil: That's right, Alex. So, my wife and I were driving home. I was driving, and she decided to pull out a book by Bill Bryson and read an excerpt. And it was so funny that I must have kind of swerved. And next thing I know, I'm doing a Breathalyzer test. [Laughs] And all's well that ends well.

Alex Trebek: Did they ticket you?

Nikhil: No, he was very nice. He let me go.

Alex Trebek: Okay, good, good.

Alex Trebek: Alex Jacob is our champion. Now, when he was younger, ladies and gentlemen, he thought about game shows. He wanted to be not a quiz-show contestant, but a host? Or is it the other way around?

Alex Jacob: The other way around, yeah. I wanted to be a game-show contestant.

Alex Trebek: Contestant.

Alex Jacob: About kindergarten age, all the kids going around--"Oh, I want astronaut, cowboy, dinosaur"--game-show contestant.

Alex Trebek: Game-show contestant. Right now he is a contestant. He is a champion.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Scott found the Daily Double on the 19th clue. Alex had $4,600, Nikhil had $2,200, and Scott was at $600. Scott wagered $5.

AUTOMOTIVE ABBREVS. $1000: CPO:
Certified this, a nicer way of saying used
(Scott: $5, please.)
(Alex Trebek: Hello. You don't like this category.)
(Scott: No, I don't.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
STARTS WITH A VOWEL $1000: Courteous or refined in expression, from the Latin for "city"

LITERARY MEALTIME? $1000: In the title of Alice Childress' 1973 novel of teenage heroin addiction, this "Ain't Nothin' but a Sandwich"
(Alex Jacob: What is cold turkey?)

AUTOMOTIVE ABBREVS. $800: DRL:
Daytime these, which make the car more conspicuous to other drivers
(Scott: What are rear lights?)

AUTOMOTIVE ABBREVS. $600: BLIS:
An "information system" to monitor this area outside the driver's field of vision
(Scott: What's the blind side?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Alex: $6,200
Scott: $1,805
Nikhil: $1,800

A 2008 review of this novel, later filmed, compared it to "Battle Royale" & said it's "a future we can fear".

Alex won with zero DDs, but he was helped by the other contestants' uncanny ability to hang themselves with them.

I came up with the TSs urbane, hero, and daytime running lights.

Helps if you've seen Battle Royale. Though these current pop culture FJs that we see every now and then are almost always easy.

Alex dude you looked so annoyed when the other guys got the DDs, I must admit I laughed each time.

A bit disappointed that Scott didn't TDD on his first DD (TDD meaning $600, not the full $1000) as a loss would have been easy to bounce back from (provided he didn't stay in the Auto abbrev. category ;) ) but I'll let more astute wagering minds than I speculate on the proper action of that DD.

Regardless, this was an exciting game to watch!

Unlucky for both Scott (for being a strong LearnedLeaguer) and Nikhil (who had several excellent gets and I feel could've been a good champ in another life) to run against omgwheelhouse today. Interesting that this game was more or less decided in regular Jeopardy and without Daily Doubles on Alex's end. That's not the way I expected it to play out, but a win is certainly a win. Hopefully Alex can get to 7 or more.

No DDs? No problem. The Alex steamroller will not be stopped. Welcome to the ranks of the superchampion, Alex.

I blanked on Battle Royale for a bit, so no instaget for me. Managed to piece together enough hints to get it right anyway.

Congratulations, Alex, on your sixth win. I had 35 correct responses including three triple stumpers: urbane, a hero, and blind spot. Instaget FJ.

Never saw Battle Royale, but remembered movie reviews that compared Hunger Games to it.

Maybe with his winnings and time off for the Celebrity Tourney, Alex can buy a new shirt - that fits. ;)

Congrats to Alex on becoming a superchamp!

I found this to be another pretty hard board, though I did get both of the DJ round DDs. And even though he ended up not knowing it, Nikhil should have gone TDD on the "karaoke" DD that was in the second row in the DJ round.

FJ was an instant get. The writers should have saved that clue for the Teen Tournament.

The whole day I was thinking how crazy it would be if Alex's and Scott's opponent in this game did to them what Brian McEntee did to Samer Ismail and Mark Runsvold. It didn't work out that way, but Nikhil should be very proud of how he played against those two.

42 right.

Vowel (3), Sports (5), Bill (5), Auto (2), Lit (4), Friday (5)
Vow (5), Bible (2), Art (2), Dict (3), Miss (3), Color (3)

Lach Trash: "hero", "blind spot", "karaoke"- DD

I went with World War Z instead. Keep it going, Alex!

I actually disagree. Any teen who doesn't live under a rock would get this clue, but it's more challenging for the adults, because they might not think of YA lit.

Yeah, good point. I am usually terrible at pop culture clues, but I may have known it just from seeing it come up on J! so many times.

Why in the world would he wager 600? Either the maximum or the minimum, nothing else makes sense. Scott's wagering was fine, but neither the buzzer nor luck was his friend tonight.

I disagree with your disagree, Hunger Games has entered the cultural zeitgeist that people (like me) who aren't YAs or haven't read the book could get Jeopardy! level trivia questions about it. Think of it as the Harry Potter of the 2010s

WLT "balloons" on Arts for $400?

4/5 in Color and Bible, missing Michael/Dragon and Silver Linings Playbook.

Lach Trash: Blind spot, karaoke.

I thought Goodbye Mr. Chips was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay undervalued at $400.

Mom thought Alex was cocky on FJ! but I don't see it.

Instaget: blah blah battle blah blah future. I want none of that boring dystopia crap ever, but super-instaget nonetheless.
