Of course, I play one of the two people in the rundle who could beat a 7(5) yesterday, and the only one to go 9(6).
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

I was a boy of that same age in the 80s. When I saw Loverboy playing a free show in the mid 90s, I knew all too well who that guy in the leather pants was. That's an image I didn't need to see.Dr. J wrote:Knowing Mike Reno might be a gender thing...if you were a girl of a certain age in the 1980s (as I was), you KNEW who the hottie with the bandanna and leather pants was: he was your Loverboy! I needed that day. Two pop culture questions, a sports one, a gimme (at least, I thought, though I guess 45% get rate belies that) geography one, and a world history one where, given where I work, I'd need to go quit my job if I got wrong. That plus perfect defense (since I knew my science score was so bad I was guaranteed to get a 6(5)) finally broke that 7-game losing streak.

Have you seen any recent photos of Reno? Let's just say he's not wearing the same size leather pants anymore.Coelacanth wrote:I was a boy of that same age in the 80s. Re: LL65 (For the LLamas amongst us)
Yesterday was as close to a Slumdog Millionaire (or Cliff Clavin if you prefer) moment as I've had. I've followed EPL football for 30 odd years with a particular eye to the Merseyside rivalry and actually went to a Mapplethorpe exhibit in '89 so the "no sin in Cincinnati" incident was memorable. Also do svidanya is one of about 4 phrases in Russian that I know. Had the Commish asked how to say please or thank you in Russian, I'd have had a 6(5) most likely.teapot37 wrote:I am glad I don't play you EVERY day (except for that one, of course).Woof wrote:Just be glad you aren't playing me today, Chris.teapot37 wrote:Of course, I play one of the two people in the rundle who could beat a 7(5) yesterday, and the only one to go 9(6).

Re: LL65 (For the LLamas amongst us)
This is the first time I had three absolute WAGs turn out tone correct. I didn't even need to beat myself up over the one where I changed from the right answer at the last minute. Got a win anyways (and a decent score, but I don't blame my opponent for giving my WAGs high values)
(For those keeping score: 1 - knew, 2 - WAG, 3 - no idea, 4 - more or less a WAG but I was also considering O'Keefe, 5 - WAG, 6 - put down "thank you" at the last minute.)

Re: LL65 (For the LLamas amongst us)
I was literally a few letters away from my first 9(5). I had a good feeling that my strength in Sports would cause my opponent to give me a 0 there, which was good because I didn't know it (I wagged Birmingham). And I knew 1,4,5,6. So it all came down to Japanese food.
I have eaten sushi many times, and knew that I had heard the word before, but it just wasn't coming to me. Went through the whole alphabet, and kind of settled on the letter "N" as the first letter--still nothing coming. Nobu, Nagasaki...gah! what is it? I finally typed a word that I thought sounded like a word I might have heard: noriyagi (not a real word, I now know). What??? I was that close?
I was fortunate that I still managed another day of perfect defense and a 7(4)-6(5) win, taking the chance that if I didn't know the sports question, neither would my opponent, who was also pretty strong in sports.

Ugh.
My season's just going down the crapper fast.
For some reason, I'm either just not processing the clues well enough, or they're just not falling in my lap.
Ah well. E Rundle, I'm coming down home honey.

Re: LL65 (For the LLamas amongst us)
Somebody's got to save this discussion from dropping to Page 2!
Managed to earn a 6(4)-6(5) tie with Threeifbyair yesterday, guessing (successfully?) that your age and/or your Britishness would prevent you from knowing Police Woman. (Edit added: One case where familiarity with an opponent from JBoard probably helped me. Seems like you recently mentioned here being British, and that stuck in my head. The fact that you attended Cambridge might not have sunk in without that recent mention.)
Took a WAG on New Yorker and got the 3!
Blanked on the Disney movie; went for a BWA with "Walt's Porn Stash".

I don't quite get that. How did over half the people get this? Why would The New Yorker be the go-to answer?TheyCallMeMrKid wrote:Took a WAG on New Yorker and got the 3!
On the Lake Nasser one, I thought, "I know Nasser was the 1st President, but who the heck was #2?" Oops. After seeing the correct response, I looked up the first guy and had never heard of him.

Not that I didn't know it cold, but one of the websites I visit every morning had this as their picture of the day yesterday (and unfortunately, I still lost to a fellow Boardie):

Re: LL65 (For the LLamas amongst us)
I got it from having read In Cold Blood a few years ago, and the prologue included information about how it had first appeared in The New Yorker. I would also imagine there just aren't too many publications that 1) publish things in serial form and 2) were around in ~1960 and are still known today.econgator wrote:I don't quite get that. I can see how the MCWA was Aswan, though I know that Aswan is (was?) a city and not the president. I think the question would have been better if it had wording to exclude the dam that make the lake.alietr wrote:Not that I didn't know it cold, but one of the websites I visit every morning had this as their picture of the day yesterday (and unfortunately, I still lost to a fellow Boardie):
Missed out on my first 6-pack in a long time by saying "Finding Tomorrowland", mixing it up with "Finding Neverland". I've gotta move facts onto their own neurons, instead of cramming them all together.
