Your personal Jeopardy! dream board

Post by skullturf »

What six categories would you be happiest to see on a Jeopardy! board that you were playing?

Categories that you know and love and that would probably give you an advantage over other Jeopardy! contestants.

Rules:

(1) To force your picks to be well-rounded, you have to choose one "subtopic" from each of the six classic Trivial Pursuit categories: Geography, Entertainment, History, Arts & Literature, Science & Nature, Sports & Leisure.

(2) They don't have to be Jeopardy! categories that have actually appeared on the show, but they have to be non-specialized enough to have a realistic chance of appearing on the show. So your Geography category can't be "Street names in [my home town of 80,000 people]", and if you have a graduate degree in applied math, your Science & Nature category can't be "Numerical solution of differential equations" (we'd probably all agree that's too specialized for the show).

My picks would be something like this:

Geography: CANADIAN GEOGRAPHY
Entertainment: THE SIMPSONS
History: FAMOUS DEATHS
Arts & Literature: LEWIS CARROLL (or maybe NEWSPAPER COMIC STRIPS if that counts as "arts")
Science & Nature: MATHEMATICIANS
Sports & Leisure: THE NHL

Geography--U.S. STATE CAPITALS.
Entertainment--THEY PERFORMED AT WOODSTOCK.
History--ROMAN EMPERORS.
Arts & Literature--MODERN LIBRARY'S 100 BEST NOVELS.*
Science & Nature--THE ELEMENTS.
Sports & Leisure--COLLEGE FOOTBALL NICKNAMES.

* These are English-language novels published during the 20th century. The list skews heavily toward titles published before 1960 and authors like Faulkner, Hemingway, and James.

Can we substitute a word-play category for one of the big six?

ETA: Congrats, Jeoprosy. Will have to miss your first appearance, though, my son has a soccer game.

GEOGRAPHIC RECORDS (like the highest, deepest, biggest, etc.)
THE BILLBOARD HOT 100 (preferably current, but anything since 2009 works)
THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
DO THE MATH
YA CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE
THE OLYMPICS

If I could get rid of the geography category and add a wordplay, it would be SPELLING.

Geography: National Flags
Entertainment: CW Shows
History: English/British Royalty
Arts & Literature: Musical Theatre
Science and Nature: Something relating to Chemicals/ Chemical laws/reactions
Sports and Leisure: College Basketball

CW shows are my guilty pleasure, and I think most highbrow contestants would be thrown by that category. Wasn't sure if musicals would go under entertainment or arts (personally, I think it goes under arts). The alternative would be Shakespeare.

Making a mental note that if I see more than two of these on tomorrow's (?) show, I've been spoiled on the result. ;)

Me:

Geography: well, anything, really, but let's go with the obvious FLAGS OF THE WORLD
Entertainment: '80s ROCK
Science & Nature: THE PERIODIC TABLE (not saying that's my greatest wheelhouse in S&N, but I like the periodic table!)
History: 20th CENTURY HISTORY (not because I lived through a scosch more than a quarter of it, or that its recent, but I could do pretty good there, although I'm a history buff of all ages.)
Arts & Literature: THE BIBLE
Sports & Leisure: CANADIAN PRO TEAM NAMES
"Jeopardy! is two parts luck and one part luck" - Me

"The way to win on Jeopardy is to be a rabidly curious, information-omnivorous person your entire life." - Ken Jennings

Geography: U.S. STATE CAPITALS
Entertainment: THE BRADY BUNCH (Yeah, shocker, I know.)
Science & Nature: ELEMENT"S" (S&N is not my area, so I would need the extra help of narrowing the possibles.)
History: U.S PRESIDENTS
Arts & Literature: STEPHEN KING BOOKS
Sports & Leisure: THE 50 GREATEST PBA BOWLERS

Those writing for the SHC (We are still having one, right?) now you have some category ideas. :)

I know a certain boardie - an incredibly valuable asset to the community too - who will be free from the encumbrance of writing a weekly poll during the summer to run the SHC ... ;)

My 6 categories would be Square Numbers, Harry Potter, U.S. Geography, U.S. History, Animals, and 90s Kids Programs.
Just a person who loves game shows.
