Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. We're coming off a very competitive match on yesterday's edition of Jeopardy! CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Darren Harris-Fain is an English professor from Alabama. And I'm thinking back to my days in school. We came up with nicknames for most of our professors. What's your nickname?
Darren: "The Dark Lord".
Alex: How did the students come up with that?
Darren: I asked them to call me the Dark Lord.
Alex: Oh--oh, you asked them? See, I--if I were in your shoes in that situation, I--I would have preferred "Prince of Darkness".
[Laughter]
Alex: Why "the Dark Lord"?
Darren: Well, it was the first day of class. I'm reading through names, making sure I get how everybody likes to be called, and I said, "You may call me your Dark Lord."
Alex: Oh. Okay. Just as simple as that. Way to go.
Alex: Martha Holland, school administrator from Pennsylvania.
Martha: Yes.
Alex: Grew up in a house that has some historical significance in America.
Martha: That's right--uh, I grew up in a little town outside of Boston, Massachusetts, and our house had a secret. It was a station on the Underground Railroad. There was a trapdoor off the library that opened into a secret room, a secret chamber, uh, that was great fun for my siblings and me playing hide-and-seek when we were kids.
Alex: I bet.
Martha: And sparked the imagination thinking about who might have occupied that space over--
Alex: All of the people who came up and what suffering they must have endured--
Martha: Yeah. Indeed, yes.
Alex: --in order to come to freedom. Good for you.
Alex: All right, Phil Arevalo is our champion. He got to do some scuba diving in a place that I always hoped I would get to do some scuba diving, also.
Phil: Yeah, I got to--for my first job out of college, I got to scuba dive in Greece. Uh, what happened--I didn't expect to do this in my job, and one day, my boss comes up to me and says, "Do you want to learn how to scuba dive? And of course, I said yes. Uh, then about eight months later, and after learning to scuba dive in, like, cold Cape Cod, we were in Greece, scuba diving, doing some science.
Alex: And the waters are so clear and beautiful.
Phil: Yes.
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
VIDEO & FILM $200: Add one letter to a sleep-aid drug & you get this "noise"; in production it's called room tone
(Phil: What is white noise?)
VIDEO & FILM $400: The last shot of the day is also known as this gin cocktail shot--because the next shot is in that cocktail's glass
(Alex: Phil, you want to stick with that category?)
(Phil: Sure, we'll go with VIDEO & FILM for $600.)
VIDEO & FILM $600: Want to show video of what your on-screen talking head is yapping about? Use this letter "roll" that paints the story
(Darren: What are credits?)
DISCOVERIES $200: Frederick Cook claimed to have discovered this in 1908, a year before Robert Peary
(Alex: Claimed to have discovered [*]. Darren, pick again.)
[NOTE: Alex gave control to Darren erroneously; it was still Phil's turn to select.]
I PLAYED HIM IN THE RECENT MOVIE $600: Guy Pearce:
This abdicator in "The King's Speech"
(Darren: Who is George V?)
(Martha: Who is Edward... VII?)
VIDEO & FILM $800: Geometrically speaking, a high-this shot makes a character seem puny
(Darren: What is a long shot?)
...
(Alex: We have less than a minute now.)
KANSAS $800: This 10-letter occupation is the complete epitaph on the grave of William Inge in Independence, Kansas
KANSAS $1000: John Kloehr & other citizens of Coffeyville, Kansas made sure that this gang's Oct. 5, 1892 raid was its last
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

Re: Wednesday, June 10, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
A boardie from Alabama? I know who I'm pulling for!!!!
The first part of the game was pretty tough to watch. I guess none of them have ever worked in the film industry.
Despite the slow start, the players rebounded to have two players make it into quintuple figures. Darren should have bet a little more on that last DD as Phil could have broken his lock if he gets that last $400 clue.
An instaget FJ for me. Congrats to Darren, can't wait to see your comments. Since you got to see it at 9:30 this morning, you already got to see yourself.
May I ask where you teach?

Thought it was a tough category -- I got none of them.Bamaman wrote:The first part of the game was pretty tough to watch. I guess none of them have ever worked in the film industry.
No real guess on FJ (Star Wars). Don't remember Reagan saying anything about the canal.
Re: Wednesday, June 10, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Lach Trash: Ambient, West Nile.
Although I got it, I thought the "sleep aid" TOM for "ambient" was a bit obscure. I was hoping they'd get to the last clue just because I wanted to see a whole category get triple-stumped again.
Ran Words That Should Rhyme and Toys & Games. (My Little Pony clue? To quote Fluttershy, "yay.")
I had King Arthur down as an 0/5 as soon as it came up.
I knew the lake in Rivers for $2000 was "Lake of the _____" but couldn't remember the last word. All I could think of was "Ozarks" which was obviously wrong
Although I got neither, I was surprised that no one even guessed on North Pole or Belize. (By the by, suggestions on remembering which pole Peary discovered?)
No guess on FJ!

Congratulations, Darren, on your win! You played very well, after a slow start by all three players. I think the first four clues were all triple stumpers. I had 39 correct responses including six triple stumpers: ambient, North Pole, Edward VIII, playwright, Deep Thoughts, and Belize. I also got the missed DD of West Nile Virus. No guess on FJ.

In my local market there are a lot of ads for sleep aids during J. Might be why ambient felt very easy.

Re: Wednesday, June 10, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I think Alex implied in his explanation of the FJ answer that Carter followed Reagan in office and then signed the Canal Treaty that gave the zone to Panama. Reagan must have made his comment during the Republican primary campaign that he lost to Ford, who then lost to Carter.

Re: Wednesday, June 10, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Alex made a mistake near the beginning with who should pick a clue. Phil picked Discoveries for $200. Darren rang in but gave an incorrect response and then Alex had Darren pick the next clue instead of Phil. I don't think I've seen that happen before.

I have a never used degree in broadcast communications and I still struggled. I knew B roll and got a lucky guess on martini shot. Although that one made me wonder if they thought they were on the set of a Bogart movie.econgator wrote:Thought it was a tough category -- I got none of them.Bamaman wrote:The first part of the game was pretty tough to watch. Re: Wednesday, June 10, 2015 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Difficult boards with second row DDs seems to be the trend lately. Literature is usually one of my best categories, but I had never heard of any of the authors or books who came up in the bottom three clues in that 20th Century Books category in the DJ round.
I totally blanked on FJ.
Congrats to Darren on the win!

FJ was an instaget for me, but maybe it helped that 1976 was the first election I voted in, so I remember it well.

34 right.
Video (0), KS (3), Rhyme (4), Toys (4), Dis (3), Mov (5)
Books (4), Nu (4), Stones (3), River (2), Arthur (0), "Work" (2)
Lach Trash: "Edward VIII", "Belize"
I got it pretty quickly after recalling the Torrijos-Carter treaties from 1977.

I think you're right.Leander wrote:I think Alex implied in his explanation of the FJ answer that Carter followed Reagan in office and then signed the Canal Treaty that gave the zone to Panama. Reagan must have made his comment during the Republican primary campaign that he lost to Ford, who then lost to Carter.
Congratulations, Darren!

I got FJ instantly. It helps that I'm old enough to remember the 1976 presidential campaign (which Carter won) and that he signed the treaty to give the canal back to Panama a couple years later-which at the time was controversial.
Darren is going to be a good champion. I hope he sticks around for a while.

To be fair, he wasn't running for president at the time.econgator wrote:No real guess on FJ (Star Wars). Don't remember Reagan saying anything about the canal.
Do you remember that speech happening during the presidential campaign?KazooJ!fan wrote:I got FJ instantly. If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

That Film category was tough, and I was surprised the defending champ kept on going back to it.

Reagan did run for president in 1976. He challenged President Ford for the Republican nomination and lost in a close race. I was only eight years old during the 1976 primaries, so I do not remember the canal being a big issue, if it even was.bpmod wrote:To be fair, he wasn't running for president at the time.econgator wrote:No real guess on FJ (Star Wars).
