Game Recap for Show #7089, 2015-06-11

CONTESTANTS
Kathryn Tesar, a communications professional from Austin, Texas
Kyle Stephens, a customer due-diligence specialist originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Darren Harris-Fain, an English professor from Prattville, Alabama (whose 1-day cash winnings total $22,000)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thanks, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Well, as you just heard, Darren won $22,000 yesterday on the program. When he went into Final Jeopardy!, it was a runaway game, he could not be caught, but one of the categories that helped him had to do with recent literature. Will literature be one of the categories today? Who knows? Kathryn and Kyle, hopefully you will find categories to your liking, also. Let's go to work in this first round, shall we, players? And good luck with these categories...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
WAY BACK IN 2012 (4/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
HAIRMAGEDDON (4/5)

LONDON CALLING (3/4)
A GAME OF H‑O‑R‑S‑E (5/5) (Alex: Notice the separation on the letters. The first clue in that category, the correct response will begin with the letter "H", then "O", "R", as we go down.)

WAY BACK IN 2012 $800: These 2 states legalized recreational marijuana use

Kyle: $800
Kathryn: $200

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Kathryn Tesar is from Austin, Texas. Now, Kathryn, a couple of years ago, I did a little bit of work with Katie Couric. You had an encounter with her which was not a pleasant one, I understand.

Kathryn: Actually, it was very pleasant. It was a lot of fun. I was in New York, and I was supposed to meet friends for drinks, and a few minutes before I was supposed to meet them, they started texting me, "You need to get here right away." And I figured there must be a celebrity at the bar. So, I got there and saw my friends talking to Katie Couric. And I went over to meet them, and Katie actually greeted me very warmly. She said, "Kathryn, we've been waiting for you." And then she--it was very unusual--she said, "I want you to stick your finger in your mouth and get it really, really wet." And I did that, and then she asked me to stick it into a shot glass full of liquor. I did that, and then she took a lighter out and set my finger on fire. She asked me to hold it up in the air and then put it out and do a shot, and she called that a Statue of Liberty. [Laughs]

[Laughter]

Kathryn: It was--it was a lot of fun.

Alex: Katie, Katie, Katie.

Kathryn: She was lovely.

Alex: Yes, all right.

Alex: Kyle Stephens from Wisconsin. Now, he has a habit, ladies and gentlemen, when he's watching a motion picture, he really gets into it and empathizes with the characters. I'll give you an example--if it's an underwater scene, what do you do?

Kyle: Well, it all started with The Poseidon Adventure. Um, when Shelley Winters has to swim for a really long time, I hold my breath with her, um, to make sure that if I were in that situation, I would be able to make it out, too.

Alex: Uh-huh.

Kyle: And, uh, I haven't drowned yet.

[Laughter]

Alex: That's two in a row.

[Laughter]

Alex: Darren Harris-Fain is our champion. He, as you discovered on yesterday's program, is referred to by his students as "the Dark Lord". Perhaps one of the reasons is, they found out that he took belly-dancing lessons. Am I right?

Darren: That's right. Uh, in college, one of my best friends, uh, she had been an army brat and she learned how to belly-dance. And so she taught it at my university. She was getting ready to teach it again, and she said, "I only have girls in the class." And my friend Bill and I said, "We'll take it."

Alex: How many credits do you get for that? Don't answer, don't answer.

[Laughter]

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
WAY BACK IN 2012 $1000: From February to August, U.N. & Arab League envoy Kofi Annan tried to solve this country's civil war
(Kathryn: What is Congo? The--the--)
(Kyle: What is Libya?)

HAIRMAGEDDON $1000: Because it'll act as a guide, the length on top determines the overall length in a cut that's this, like a shag
(Alex: Back to you, Kyle, with a minute to go.)

LONDON CALLING $600: Hey, Napoleon! If you lost something at this largest U.K. rail center, call the lost property office

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Darren: $6,400
Kyle: $2,200
Kathryn: $600

A statue of St. Paul is located on this island where he took refuge after a shipwreck.

(Not the same picture used on the show, as I didn't have time to get a screenshot, but it's the same statue.)

Was picking between Cyprus and Crete (chose the former), forgot entirely about Malta, but wasn't Paul shipwrecked on at least one of my choices? (Paging our flightless biblical expert (at least the closest thing we got around here) Opus.)

Had no clue he was shipwrecked. Used his letters in the Bible, figured Corinth is Greek, so ... Crete.

Nope. Just the once. I didn't recall that it was Malta either. I just knew he was on his way from Israel to Rome to appeal his case to Caesar. Malta, Crete, and Cyprus are all plausible guesses. I went with Crete. It amused me to think of the Cretans surrounding Paul and saying, "Say, aren't you the guy who wrote Titus 1:12-13?" Ulp. It was a JOKE, folks! How come no one ever gets that?

This was yet another reason I wouldn't Clavin on a Bible FJ, even though I'd be sorely tempted. (The main reason is that THE WRITERS get things wrong way too often in Bible clues and I don't trust them to reverse themselves.)

I think I might have heard of him being shipwrecked, but had no idea where. I wonder how well known is this? Seemed to me to almost be "name a random Mediterranean island".

However, my almost wild guess landed me on Malta, so I'll take it. I figured shipwrecked did not seem like a concept to apply to a larger island like Cyprus, Crete or Sicily. Malta seemed like the most likely island after those to come up in a game.

Ladies and gentleman, I think we are witnessing the beginning of a 5+ day champ here. He's got the buzzer speed and the knowledge to go far and I definitely wouldn't want to be pitted against him.

However, the college english professor only wagers $2400 on an $800 DD in the novels category?? With plenty of time left in the DJ! he could have risked much more, but I guess he's just not going to be an aggressive player.

Malta was definitely one of the islands I listed to myself during the commercial break before FJ, but...

I had no idea, and hoped that there was some connection to Napoleon and went with Elba.

I've spent a lot of time on Malta, so it was an insta-get. I used to go swimming in the bay right after St. Paul's Bay (Xemxija Bay). During the break, I started listing Mediterranean islands in my head, and started with "Boy, it would be easy if it was something about Malta." Sure enough, as soon as I saw St. Paul I started laughing. I will, however, freely admit that it was EYKIOYD.

Congratulations on the impressive second win, Darren, and sorry you didn't know that one.

FJ was an instaget.

Disappointed that the champ kept running away from Geometry even tho he was getting the early clues.

My first thought was "Crete! No, wait, was it Malta?" I couldn't decide which was right before the music was done. Looking at the passage, Paul had urged the ship's captain to spend the winter on Crete, but he chose to keep heading for Italy instead.

I had no good answer to FJ either. I went with Rhodes, thinking of the Colossians as recipients of some of Paul's epistles and going from there to the Colossus of Rhodes, even though I was almost sure they weren't an island people. And it turns out they weren't.

The challengers were likable, but they became annoying in the J round when they kept going away from the London category even though they were responding correctly to it. We didn't get to see the $1000 clue.

I thought that Paul being shipwrecked on off Malta was common knowledge, at least for Christians. I guess not.

Instaget for me, at least.

The interview caused me to be spoiled on the game's result. Darren mentioned a belly dancing class he took in college. I thought he might have attended a college in Alabama so I googled him to see where he went.

Anyway, I did get his profile page from where he works, but I also got a link from the Montgomery paper saying he had won his second game. (The show airs there at 9:30 AM, so it wouldn't be a spoiler for them to post it).

Nice win by Darren. Crete won the Pyrrhic victory in the coin flip over Cyprus. I did know Paul was shipwrecked, but did not know where.

Was there some reason the showed the statue? Did it add anything to the clue, other than making it harder to read since the print got smaller?

No reason I can see. It's a rather nondescript statue.

Congrats on a second impressive win to the Dark Lord of Jeopardy.

Again, no good on FJ for me. But at least I gave an answer this time (Corsica).

$23400 for me for the second episode in a row. 34 R/ 3 W, 2/3 DD's. I guessed Crete for Final. I've noticed that Finals containing a picture have a lower get-rate.
IMO, the math clues on this show are often poorly-written. I have an extensive background in math, and I still had trouble parsing those geometry clues in 3 seconds. At my audition, before the buzzer round, we practiced a math category and it was almost as impenetrable as this. (I sounded like TPH there.) I said "concave" instead of convex, despite having taken a "convex analysis" course in grad school. Well, I ended up auditing it because the average test grade was about a 30.
Nice job by our boardie on securing another lock.

Amen to that. Remember the "upper room" fiasco?
