CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: As you heard at the beginning of the program, Megan Casey is a mechanical engineer. I don't care about that. But I've heard something about you--you bring cookies to work. Did you bring cookies to the studio today, I hope?

Megan: I--I didn't... bring cookies to the studio.

Alex: Oh, boo, hiss. What kind do you specialize in?

Megan: Oh, I really like ginger molasses cookies and sugar cookies, 'cause then I can decorate them or write things on them.

Alex: How did you get into doing that?

Megan: Oh, it was just, um... I just picked it up from my grandma, I guess, and I just used it to de-stress during college whenever there was too much homework.

Alex: All right. Good idea. Way to think.

Alex: Ian Giesbrecht is from British Columbia, Canada, and one of your first jobs sounds like it was kind of fun.

Ian: It was very fun. Yes, we, uh, we got picked up in a helicopter in our small town. This is on Haida Gwaii. It's a little archipelago up in Northwest B.C. They picked us up in the helicopter. They said, "Go to this place. We're going to count puffins for a week, you and a buddy, and we'll pick you up." So we just--I was 15. They picked us up. Flew us off into South Moresby Park at the time. Counted probably the same puffins over and over again. We just [mimes making tick marks] ticked it off. And then the helicopter came back, and... right as we were running out of food. Perfect.

Alex: Th--those are such photogenic birds.

Ian: They are.

Alex: A lot of colors, and that weird beak--

Ian: Yeah.

Alex: --going down, and they look like they're stubby, but they fly like the wind.

Ian: Yes, they're--well, they're catching those fish, right? Really fun to watch.

Alex: Okay. Good.

Alex: Brennan Bushee is our champion, a good player, whose career as an operations analyst, working with computers, was inspired by--

Brennan: Robots.

Alex: [Mimicking a robot movement] --robots.

Brennan: Yes, I--I took a robotics course in college, and, I--I thought... I--I thought I was going to be pre-med. I took one business class and didn't really like it, but then... the robots are what made me settle on computer science.

Alex: Well, good for you.

Brennan: Mm-hm.

Alex: I thought you--you were going to say, "I took pre-med, but then I looked at blood, and I decided maybe robots are for me."

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Ian found the Daily Double on the 25th clue. Brennan had $3,400, Ian had $3,800, and Megan was at $4,200. Ian wagered $2,000.

Instaget FJ. Getting an actual copy of the book was harder than getting Final Jeopardy right.

Ian went, "I think I can, I think I can," but no, he couldn't. He just couldn't get over Brennan. Even Brennan making a $5000 goof on a DD didn't help. Overall, this was a weak game. I got more TSS than I bothered to keep count of. Megan blew it by making a wild guess on that $1600 clue near the end. It all came down to Brennan knowing FJ. I settled on Laura Ingalls Wilder before AT was finished reading, and I never wavered.

Of all the beastly books, "this author of Jaws" was a stand-and-stare TS...

Almost-instaget FJ, though after seeing the word 'pioneer', it took a second to dislodge Willa Cather.

If I hadn't know Ian was a boardie before I could tell from his gameplay. Congrats, sir. You have been on Jeopardy! (and were enjoyable to watch too)

No chance on FJ.

Congrats to Brennan on win # 4, and sorry things didn't work out better for Ian.

FJ an instaget.

Coryat $12,800.

Really liked the top 40's category. Surprised Benchley was a TS.

Ian, sorry it didn't work out. I'm very jealous of your puffin experience.

I found this to be a tough board. The contestants did just fine on it.

The "Cisco" DD was an instant get. I'm currently working on my MBA, and I had to read a case on Cisco just last week.

I locked in on Willa Cather for FJ and didn't consider anyone else. Oops.

I was rooting for you, Ian. Sorry that it couldn't have lasted longer, but you played a great game! Congrats!

Congratulations to Brennan on another win. Ian played pretty well for most of the game, as did Megan. And all three of their names end in "-an". I had 38 correct responses including five triple stumpers: Daniel Boone, Peter Benchley, The Jacksons (who were known as The Jackson 5 at the time of their hit mentioned in the clue), James Taylor, and Johnny Cash/June Carter. I also got the missed DD of Cisco. Instaget FJ.

Same here. I had Cather in mind until I got to the word "series." That helped turn my thinking to the correct answer.

Not quite an instaget -- I pondered Cather and Suzanne Collins -- but Wilder seemed to be the best fit for the clue, so that's what I went with.

I was hoping for another boardie champ; sorry it didn't work out for mennoknight. The first and only time I ever saw puffins was at the Vestmanna cliffs, in the Faroe Islands. Anyone who loves birding has to go there.
I had $23,400 (36 R, including Final, and 1 neg). Final was one of two obvious choices and I picked the right one, so I've gotten three in a row after missing four in a row. I gave myself credit for "vertebrae" instead of spine, but if they wouldn't accept that, I'd only lose $800. This game had a much lower combined Coryat compared to the other ones this week, when I averaged just under two-thirds of the combined score.
Hoping for a third lap

I finally got a Final Jeopardy right this week. Instaget for me.

Did well in the top 40 music category-I think I got 4/5 in that-including 2 triple stumpers.

Brennan is a good champ-I hope he gets into the ToC.

Can I give my thoughts now? Cool.

Brennan was SO FAST. I am in awe after watching it. I knew every answer he knew, but he was quicker. Much quicker. That DJ board was hard for me. Very hard. The Wednesday board and the Friday board got me excited. This one.... Ugh.

I knew final. I'd given up. I knew it was an easy question that they knew, I transposed my three banned female authors who wrote voting books. Then I didn't check it because I knew I'd lost.

I wanted a HARD American authors question. I could've taken them on some obscure McCarthy or Roth reference. When it was so easy I quit, to the point I got it wrong. I know this sounds like an excuse but it's true.

I got a daily double right. I was winning. I feel awful and good all at once.
I eat chicken. That's what I do.

43R for goats and near-instaget on FJ after forcing brain redirect away from "Willa Cather" knee-jerk response to 'Pioneer'; I recalled the book release and remember thinking, "Yeah, I'll wait a year to pick up my copy, eh?!" Now it's time!

LT: Peter Benchley (Wow! Really?); Andrew Jackson = 40% of Grant, LOL; Jackson 5; Geochronology (I think they were put off by "Geo-" given in clue, makes you think; "So easy? Really?); Lockheeed-Martin F-35, Ile de France (!) and got the Cisco Kid DD, was shouting hilariously and the wife said; "Please shut up, already!" Too funny.
Both Ian and Megan put up stiff resistance but I could see Ian was struggling with the buzzer. Good game by challengers kept him from running away!
Pretty near win from the 4th podium, but was a tight game idk how it would fare under hot lights with all of us pressing buzzers... :-)

I thought Ian was going to take this one, but Brennen finished strong to take a fourth win. Congrats to Ian for making the show and representing the board well.

FJ took me a bit, then I remembered she had another book come out last year and got it right.

It was looking so good for a while there, Ian. Sorry that you faded like that and Brennan took off and ran with it. I kept yelling at you to stop guessing, but did you listen? Noooooo!

Hopefully you found it to be as much as fun as everyone does, Ian.
