People claiming PINCH HITTER will not add votes/entries to the "sheep" count, but remember the runs will be scored by answer voting rank, not by straight answer count. If RED is the most popular of 8 answers, people who picked RED will get 7 runs. People who send in the PINCH HITTER will also get 7 runs.brick wrote:Question about Pinch Hitter scoring. Suppose the highest scoring answer is RED and 9 people say RED, and 4 people say Pinch Hitter. Is RED worth 9 points or 13 points?

The tarp has been cleared, it's time to PLAY BALL!
Top of the 1st:
Name a state admitted to the union between 1800 and 1865.
Wondering how people arrived at their answers here. For me, admittedly with probably below average JBoarder knowledge, I know the original 13, and I know the last half a dozen or so, so I'd probably just try to go somewhere other than those. If your home state was admitted in that time frame, you probably know that one (That's my other possibility). More knowledgeable players will be familiar with which states were around during the Civil War, or assume that the states that were part of the Louisiana Purchase would have been admitted during this window, or if you're really good, you might know all of the dates and the order of admission for all of the states, and just had to decide which one to go with.
The distribution here was pretty flat, which has made the scoring by answer rank...different.
Remember, in the top of the inning, runs are bad.

Welp, this is going to be a long game...
I was going to go with Kansas, then thought it might be sheep city. Darn you, South Dakota...

Re: TD 251: Midsummer Classic-Top of the 1st Completed
I had a somewhat radical idea that I think I should have gone with. I'll know soon how stupid it was to second guess myself.

I was going to go with Texas, which would have been a singleton, of course. Sigh.barandall800 wrote:Welp, this is going to be a long game...

Pretty much my strategy - crossed my fingers and picked a state in the middle third of the country.TheyCallMeMrKid wrote: Wondering how people arrived at their answers here. So why did I not use my home state?

That's an easy trap to fall into. The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed in 1854.squizzle wrote:Missed it by that much...NEBRASKA (1867) – wrong – 19 runs

Re: TD 251: Midsummer Classic-Reveal Coming Tuesday Morning
All of the ones I knew for Civil War-related reasons, I felt would be sheepy (Kansas, West Virginia, Missouri (Compromise)). Wasn't so confident on a lot of the others, but I knew California for sure, and hoped people would key more on other states.TheyCallMeMrKid wrote:Wondering how people arrived at their answers here.

At the last minute I switched from Nevada to Louisiana, thinking of the classic "hard is popular" and "easy is scarce" reverse psychology of this game. At least Louisiana didn't sheep.

Re: TD 251: Midsummer Classic-Top of the 1st Completed
I'm not sure it would have changed any of my answers, but I was under the impression that answers for the top and bottom of the inning would be grouped together for scoring purposes. The directions don't say one way or the other, but I think a TD within the past year used a split scoring like this, and I guess I just assumed the same here and didn't think to ask about it.

I knew Nevada joined the union either just before or just after the end of the Civil War, and I didn't want to risk a wrong answer early. Good thing Minnesota was nearly as obscure.jjwaymee wrote:At the last minute I switched from Nevada to Louisiana, thinking of the classic "hard is popular" and "easy is scarce" reverse psychology of this game. Dangit I missed the cutoff on this TD. Woulda gone with WV... sigh. SD came in under Baby Ben Harrision in a group of six NW states often asked on J!:barandall800 wrote:Welp, this is going to be a long game...

North and South Dakota, Montana and Washington in 1889; Idaho and Wyoming in 1890
