Ouch. It's been a while since I've hit rock bottom on a TD.

I would have gotten away with a better score by now, too, if it wasn't for those meddling kids TheyCallMeMrKid and their dog his sporting dogs... :P

Really? Don't we usually go by the J! standard rule of spelling that it's correct if it doesn't change the pronunciation?

Never mind, apparently it's just a "Brittany", not a Brittany Spaniel. Still though, under "other names" on the wiki page it does include "Brittany Spaniel."

Judges?

I think the issue is that you added "Spaniel" to the end. Apparently, the AKC dropped it from the official breed name in 1982: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brittany_ ... 29#History. That judgment seems a little harsh to me, as the intent was clear and Brittany Spaniel is a widely used and recognized name, even if it is not the AKC official one. It would be akin to marking German Shepherd wrong because the official breed name is German Shepherd Dog.

*I see you came to the same conclusion. But yes, if it was my game, I would have marked it correct. I think that of the other two wrong answers that got the breed name slightly wrong, Springer Spaniel is undoubtedly wrong because there are two types. Labrador for Labrador Retriever is a tougher call, because there's no alternate that it could be, but ultimately I'd agree that it's wrong for missing half the name.

[I did accept several misspellings, btw. "i" before "e", except after "c" people!]

I definitely spent some time pondering my ruling here for all of the reasons cited by tjconn728. My initial gut instinct was to accept Labrador and not accept Brittany Spaniel, if only because I felt that if given a BMS, the person who said Labrador would probably know Labrador Retriever was the full name. Also because Labs are more popular, I more frequently hear them referred to as Labradors (and Golden Retrievers as Goldens), but am not as familiar personally with hearing a Brittany called a Brittany Spaniel. But then I felt like it would be inconsistent to accept a name that was missing a word and not accept one that had added an extra word just based on my own personal experience.

The Wikipedia article on the Brittany states "Although it is often referred to as a Spaniel, the breed's working characteristics are more akin to those of a pointer or setter." Well, that's really helpful!<sarcasm> It's often called a Spaniel, but it's not really a Spaniel. Presumably this is the reason that the word Spaniel was removed from it's name over 30 years ago? This was the piece of information that pushed me in the direction of not accepting Brittany Spaniel as a correct answer, and therefore, also not accepting Labrador. The two breeds of Springer Spaniels are also often commonly just called "Springer Spaniel" (again, according to Wikipedia). The fact that a couple of people said "English Springer Spaniel" made it a little easier to say that just "Springer Spaniel" had to be marked incorrect. In the end, I felt that it was most consistent for me to rule that the name had to be exact, and this was part of the reason I pegged the question to the AKC website.

And this is the reason that I made this statement before revealing the answers:

Really, I'm just kinda mad at the world, of which I assume you're a current member. :p

EDIT: And I'm a cat person, it took me a loooong time to come up with one that I was confident fit the group.

Either way it's a tough call. I, myself, had informed Boardies of the name change back in TD175 (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1754&start=100#p97053), so it's really nklotz's fault for not having been around back then or going through all the archives. ;) Out of the two Brittany responses I received in that game, one did include "Spaniel," so it seems to be a recurring issue.

Would it make any difference if I told you my last encounter with a Brittany Spaniel was in 1981? IT'S THE ONLY NAME I'VE EVER KNOWN.

I disagree with your decision but respect your authority as umpire. Play ball.

Well, 9021amyers appears to have lapped me with TD252. It always seems to happen that life gets in the way of my TD reveal weeks! Lets get back on the field here.

Top of the 6th:
Name one of the top 19 apple varieties grown in the United States. (by number of bushels grown, US Apple Association, 2011)

I didn't realize there were so many apple varieties! Some of these I don't think I've ever seen in my local grocery store. I guess that regionality may have tripped up some here.

No idea...no idea whatsoever...why the Chevy Aveo was stuck in my head when apparently it's never been known by that name in the U.S. And never mind a bunch of other Chevy cars with U.S. names I actually know that I didn't bother to use. :?

Well, at least I got the sheep in the bottom half and chopped my last-place position down to a meager 4 points... :P
