Wikipedia Article of the Day
Robert's post on Little Orphant Annie gave me this idea. I'm sure a lot of us go Wikipedia browsing on a regular basis (and get totally lost going from article to article), so I'm going to propose the following: use this thread to post a link to a Wikipedia article each day that you think other Boardies would find interesting and informative in our never-ending quest for more knowledge. Let's see if we can keep to one article a day (total, not per person). And let's try to take turns, so if you've posted one, wait a while and give other people a chance so that it isn't a few people posting them. And yeah, yeah, I know all about Wikipedia's accuracy, etc., but I think people can glean a lot of information from them nonetheless.
Time will tell how well this works.

And, because of my reputation, I have to add, no, I am not being sarcastic.

Except, I'd never take it out on the whole Board, just this thread.

I'll chance it.

Inspired by last nights question and the conversation about Whistler's naming convention of "Arrangement/Symphony/ Nocturne/ Harmony/ etc... in ...[color(s)]" It links to many other artists of the day. Plenty of rabbit holes. Including that he was the first born and his parents then lost three children as infants, which, while not totally unheard of, made me wonder if the poor woman wasn't rH-, and all subsequent pregnancies slightly doomed, at that time. Then I went down some biology and blood type rabbit holes.

I come back to this article occasionally out of a perverse desire to (re)read about the unusual deaths described therein: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byford_Dolphin (The sentence about Truls Hellevik is the most heinous.) The article didn't use to identify the decedents, and somehow I found it more disturbing back then; I guess I take comfort in the dead being publicly identified.

In the spirit of the thread I saw on the page about the Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows, the following
and then I clicked through and read up on Mr Hernandez. Seems he is quite good at baseball, which is interesting, of course. But I can't find anything to explain why they play that song when he is pitching. Anyone know?In sports[edit]
The song is frequently played at Safeco Field, while Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez is making his final warm-up pitches on the mound.

Interesting read, something I was not familiar with.
I searched the archive to see if it had ever appeared on Jeopardy. Three times:
September 27, 2005 YOU'RE A "STAR" $2000: Henry VII's secret court to try cases involving state security
April 1, 2003 ODE TO ENGLAND $1000: A Westminster court with the power to seize was in a chamber whose ceiling was covered in these
December 16, 1999 COURT TV $500: A room in Westminster Palace where the powerful were tried, it now refers to any secret court

Law students learn about the Star Chamber in criminal procedure class. As the Wikipedia article notes, the Fifth Amendment is largely in reaction to Star Chamber tribunals.

I'm fascinated by segmented sleep. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segmented_sleep, especially the idea that before electric lights all humans slept this way.

When I was in architecture school, particularly when I was doing my thesis and not working at the same time, this is exactly the sleep pattern that I followed. The 2-4 hour interregnum (in the 4-8 am window) was usually my most productive time of any day.Rafferty Barnes wrote:I'm fascinated by segmented sleep. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segmented_sleep, especially the idea that before electric lights all humans slept this way.
I continue to fight for an early-afternoon siesta, but that's a tough battle to win most of the time.
