OPENING REMARKS
[ hoarse voice ]

thank you, johnny gilbert.

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.

I'm going to begin

today's program

With an apology for my voice.

It seems I have resurrected

a summer cold,

And we all know how

tough it is to get rid of those.

I hope it will not affect

our contestants.

I'm going to try to be as

precise as possible

As I read the clues.

Good luck to you.

Let's go into the first round,

shall we?

And now let's find out what

the categories are.

We start with...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
STATE OF THE ESTATE (5/5) (Alex: We'll give you the estate)
MY LITTLE PONY NAMES (5/5)
FOOD & DRINK (5/5)
TECH SAVVY (5/5)
BIOGRAPHIES (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
IN B___W (4/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Suzanne found the Daily Double on the 5th clue. Scott had no money, Suzanne had $800, and Luke was at $1,200. Suzanne wagered $1,000.

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Suzanne: $5,200
Scott: $2,600
Luke: $1,200

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Luke mcquage is an engineer

from austin, texas,

And he comes from

a fairly large family

In this day and age.

How many?

Four boys of us.

Matthew, mark, luke, and john

are our names.

[ laughter ]

yeah.

I wonder how your parents

lit on all those names.

I think it started out

just matt and john,

And then after that,

they had to go luke and mark

To finish it out.

To finish out the foursome --

the bible foursome.

Good for you.

Suzanne Vito is a writer

from albany, california.

Now, a lot of people who wind up

as contestants on "jeopardy!"

Have taken part

in trivia contests before.

You won a very different kind

of contest. What was it?

I actually won two

within a 2-week span.

I won most glamorous

At a local movie theater's

oscar party.

Mm-hmm.

And then I went for

their valentine's day show.

It was "king kong vs. Godzilla."

And I got up and gave

my very best

"about to be stomped on

by godzilla" scream,

And I won.

Oh, a screaming contest?

Yes.

I won't ask you to do

the scream for me.

I have a listening device

in my ear,

And it would probably blow

my ear drum. [ chuckles ]

Fair enough.

[ laughter ]

Scott Lord is our champion.

And a bit of information

I have on you

Says that for

the past five years,

Your family acts like pirates

during spring break.

Well, yes. It started --

We decided to go sailing

in the caribbean,

And naturally,

being disney fans,

We said

"pirates of the caribbean."

So my brother bought

a big box of pirate hats

And other memorabilia,

and we wore them.

It's a little corny, but we have

a lot of fun doing it.

It doesn't matter

if it's corny.

If you're having fun,

that's what counts.

We have a blast.

All right. You're having fun.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Suzanne: $12,800
Scott: $8,000
Luke: $4,000

PREFINAL REMARKS
Ooh, a scary category, perhaps,

for final --classical music.

Let's take a look at the clue

and see if it makes it easier.

30 seconds, players.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
CLASSICAL MUSIC

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Suzanne: Wager $3,201 to cover Scott, but no more than $4,799 so as not to fall behind Luke's doubled score.
Scott: You have the hope of surpassing Suzanne if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $4,801 to force Suzanne to wager to win while also protecting your position from being usurped by Luke.
Luke: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
The first movement of the 1888 suite named for her is titled "The Sea and Sindbad's Ship"

FINAL SCORES
Luke: $4,000 + $3,900 = $7,900 (Who was Scheherazade?) (2nd place)
Scott: $8,000 - $8,000 = $0 (Who was Scherazade?) (3rd place)
Suzanne: $12,800 - $3,300 = $9,500 (Who is Circs?) (New champion: $9,500)
(Alex [After revealing Scott's response]: Is going to cost him because he left out one syllable. You wrote Scherazade instead of [*]).

Total Potential Lach Trash: $8,600

GAME DYNAMICS
Image

CORYAT SCORES
Suzanne: $12,800, 23 R (including 1 DD), 5 W
Luke: $10,000, 14 R, 5 W (including 2 DDs)

Combined Coryat: $30,800

BATTING AVERAGES
Suzanne: 23/59 = .390
Luke: 15/60 = .250
Scott: 14/58 = .241
Team: 52/63 = .825

IN B___W $200: It's the sweet treat seen here

IN B___W $600: It's the architectural feature of the room seen here
(Scott: What is a bower window?)

As much as I want Scott to continue winning, I am waiting to see if his questionable DD wagering leads to his downfall.

Won't you be upset if he makes by far the best wager of the three and loses.

Ah, thought you were referring to his FJ wagers. Sorry about that.

And Scott is wiped out on a spelling error. He is emanciptated from having to be a superchamp. The new champ really dominated the middle of the game. The 3rd player tried valiantly to rally at the end and was even helped by finding both DJDDs, but to no avail.

Alex apologized in the opening for his voice being hoarse, and then for the rest of the show his voice was dubbed later.

Disaster for me on second DJDD. I immediately responded with one degree, but then wondered if it was latitude or longitude, completely irrelevant in a category where they only want a word starting with "d," and I picked the wrong one.

Nitpicking, dessertification is not the same thing as desertification. :D [edit: I was wrong, the "desert" in desertification is correctly pronounced like dessert, so my attempt at humor fails]

I noticed his voice was very much like what I hear on the Wii Jeopardy! game, so I figured it was dubbed, but then it was odd to hear the dubbed voice match up with his mouth on the times we saw him, particularly the player interviews. That's some good editing right there (but then, if the editing is that good, he could just have rerecorded the opening.)

I'm guessing TPH (and any other bronies that may be lurking about here) ran the pony category.

After a while I got Sherhezade (spelled that way, I'm guessing acceptable?) but all the while I thought "that can't be it, it's quite a difficult spelling for them to ask for FJ! But, it was the best I could have come up with. Oh well, Scott lives by the incorrect spelling and dies by the incorrect spelling. The Jeopardy! gods giveth and they taketh away. (I'm wondering if those who were on Facebook crying about "we knew what she meant!" on Thursday in defence of Erin to vilify Scott are now using the same defence on Scott to vilify our new champ. I'd be willing to make it a true daily double they aren't.

Oh dammit, I even sounded out the syllables (four? five? Does it end in -zahd or -za-day?) when I wrote it too.

From last Wednesday's game:
Spoiler
JULES VERNE $400: Verne drew from Edgar Allan Poe to write his first novel, "Five Weeks in" this aerial transport
(Brianne: What's a hot air balloon?)
[Bzzzzzzttttttt]
(Alex: We were going for the title Five Weeks in a Balloon, not a hot air balloon.)

Alex made it sound as though the reply was negged because they wanted an exact title. I felt that wasn't a fair ruling. My indignation was compounded by a clue in today's game.
Today:

BIOGRAPHIES $600: Chris Matthews chronicled the relationship between a Speaker of the House & Pres. Reagan in him "and the Gipper"
(Luke: Who is Tip O'Neill?)
(Alex: Yeah!)

The actual title was "Tip and the Gipper". But the clue doesn't require a correct title, just a correct ID.
Spoiler
So I was all ready to complain about last Wednesday's clue and unfairness and inconsistency. The two situations seemed IDENTICAL, right down to requiring a response about something filled with hot air. Then I looked up Verne's Five Weeks in a Balloon. Turns out the balloon was filled with hydrogen. So "hot air balloon" is straight up wrong.

We got a subtitle saying Alex re-recorded his lines due to the voice problems he mentioned at the beginning.

Wheelbarrow doesn't seem to be a compound word in the poem by William Carlos Williams:
  • so much depends
    upon

    a red wheel
    barrow

    glazed with rain
    water

    beside the white
    chickens.
I suppose you could argue that wheelbarrow and rainwater are actually compound words spread across two lines with minimalist punctuation. Dependsupon your point of view, I suppose. But I absolutely draw the line at whitechickens.

Scott had a great run; congratulations to him on his five wins. Suzanne played well in this game; congrats on her win. I had 38 correct responses including three triple stumpers: billow, Ariana Grande, and Sarah McLachlan. I also got a missed DD: degree. Instaget FJ.
