I...don't think I've been in first place in a TD before. Ever.

(Of course, we all know I'm going to crash and burn after this, but c'est la vie. I'm enjoying this while it lasts!)

I think there's a typo: goats bleating in the top five; well nevermind, it will change soon.
Disclaimer: Goats have no understanding whatsoever of bizarre scoring strats and picked these hi-lo at random! :P

QUESTION 6
Identify a well-known novel from the first sentence from the Sparknotes summary of its second chapter.
Spoiler
  1. "September arrives, and Dill leaves Maycomb to return to the town of Meridian."
  2. "Halfway between West Egg and New York City sprawls a desolate plain, a gray valley where New York’s ashes are dumped."
  3. "Distressed by the news of Ashley’s engagement, Scarlett hurries to the road to wait for her father, who has gone visiting at Twelve Oaks."
  4. "Poirot arrives in Stamboul and checks in at the Tokatlian Hotel."
  5. "En route to Augustus’s house to watch “V for Vendetta,” Hazel comments on the jolting quality of Augustus’s driving."
  6. "When the explorers return, Ralph sounds the conch shell, summoning the boys to another meeting on the beach."
  7. "As the crowd watches, Hester Prynne, a young woman holding an infant, emerges from the prison door and makes her way to a scaffold (a raised platform), where she is to be publicly condemned."
  8. "Ishmael travels from New York to New Bedford, Massachusetts, the whaling capital of the United States."
  9. "Authorities at the workhouse send Oliver to a branch-workhouse for 'juvenile offenders against the poor-laws.'"
  10. "The narrator bids us listen and declares that 'Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time.'”
  11. "When he leaves the hospital, Yossarian feels that he is the only one concerned about the senseless war in which millions of young men are bombing each other."
  12. "Winston opens the door fearfully, assuming that the Thought Police have arrived to arrest him for writing in the diary."
This is the third (and last) question of the quiz where players exhausted every possible answer. The most popular answer was worth six points, but the median answer was five; the field is very bunched at the top. Only three players took no score in this round, but considering how many played low scores on popular answers, more will wish they had.

Name a member of the Central Powers during World War I, or a European country founded in the aftermath of World War I.
Since Austria-Hungary was essentially a union of two monarchies, Austria and Hungary can both claim to be directly succeeded from the former Austro-Hungarian empire; all three responses counted as the same. Beyond the Central Powers, the remaining countries were either Central European states formed out of Austrian and German territory following the Treaty Versailles, or Baltic states that broke away from Russia after the 1917 revolutions. Surprisingly, after what developed in the TD I hosted two weeks ago, no one said Finland.

Goddamnit. I was gonna go with HI for Shell, but decided to play it safe and use the HI on the disneyland question instead, where I wasn't sure I had a correct answer, as incorrect answers for the HI answers are much less costly than for the LO answers. And Shell was the only one of the logos I could identify (or have even heard of).

Well atleast I dragged someone down with me, sorry mahatma!

It was also the Jets' only Super Bowl appearance.
Obviously the Jets need to draft more UM-ES alums!

Nope, but I'm the idiot who thought shell wouldn't be a big sheep here, even though it was the only one I could recognize, resulting in 10 extra penalty points for you. But then again, I was the only one who low scored Shell, so for once, I thought different from everyone else. Shouldn't I have gotten a singleton? ;)

Actually, ARCO spun off Sinclair in 1976. Its area of operations has changed over the years, but there are still 2,600 Sinclair stations in the West and Midwest. Unlike Amoco, whose name was mostly phased out by BP a decade ago (and was justifiably unused), Sinclair's still going strong.

It's pretty simple: you used all of your high scores before using any of your low scores.
