I was so close to closing out the season with a 5/5 week. Composers/compositions is usually one of my best categories, but I really didn't know anything about Scheherazade except for who composed it.

Mon - So angry at myself, radio station played this the week prior and announced it regularly.

Breakers would have been a DD get.

Meerschaum thanks to National Treasure.

I've heard of meerschaum pipes separately from "National Treasure", but it was that connection that got me to the answer while watching J!.

I've been to The Breakers two or three times in the years I've lived here on Cape Cod - that one was a slam-dunk.

This was a great way to finish the season for me. Psychologically speaking, it doesn't seem to matter how well or not well I've done in the first two rounds (within limits of course); I only feel reasonably good turning off the TV if I've gotten FJ correct.

Mispelling on Monday prevented me from checking that.

Know meerschaum from, of all places, Garfield, many, many years ago.

Didn't Sherlock Holmes smoke a meerschaum?

ETA: Guess not. If that's not where I've heard it, I don't know where.

No real guess Wednesday; I said "Who is Australia's Margaret Mitchell?" Neither the author's nor the book's name had previously registered with me

Thought Monday was asking for the character.
Didn't get meerschaum.

Yes, please post my stats.

Would it be possble to get my FJ! totals PMed? I want to know them but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with them being posted on the board. (If you want to post them, I guess that's fine. I'll get over it.)

Character, but didn't realize it could matter until later
Knew they wanted the author of The Thorn Birds
Knew Meerschaum but not from either of the two stated sources. I knew it was a kind of pipe that began and ended with the same letter--good enough for me.

31353313[41ToC]2[5K]05352233[41T]245344334415[4CJ]33131444334, 141 - 89

I think I did all of the polls this year (missed one last year--OrangeSAM was kind enough to let me know which one so I could go back and do it). For whatever reason, I did noticeably better this year--I think I was slightly under 50% last year.

One of my better weeks. I don't think I've gotten 4/5 FJs in a non-kids week before.
I thought Wednesday was Barbara Cartland, but that was a wild guess.

There are many references to Sherlock Holmes' smoking a Calabash Meerschaum pipe in stage portrayals dating back to the very early twentieth century. This pipe was chosen for the stage over others mentioned in the original stories primarily because of its size and visibility from the cheap seats. Basil Rathbone also smoked a curved pipe when portraying Holmes on film, though not being a pipe aficionado, I can't recall whether it was specifically a Meerschaum pipe. Nevertheless, it has definitely become part of Sherlock lore and iconography. The pipe even made an appearance in the underrated 1985 movie Young Sherlock Holmes. I believe the Meerschaum pipe was also mentioned as inaccurate lore in the new film Mr. Holmes, which I can recommend for Ian McKellen's performance as the great detective in both his sixties and nineties.

All that to say that I knew the correct question by way of Sherlock Holmes.

I interpreted Monday as "who is a fictional charater and/or musical work that has never been in my kitchen?"

I knew Meerschaum from an early Garfield strip.

Oh, those bonus questions...
  • I remembered that a historic hotel in Palm Beach is known as the Breakers, and blurted out "Florida" before I digested the rest of the clue.
  • I responded "George Lazenby" on the Bond clue despite that fact that A) Lazenby is Australian, B) his only Bond film was On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and C) that movie came out in 1969.
  • George Bernard Shaw was one of those answers that was on the tip of my tongue, but I couldn't let out the name for some reason.

Yes, I would like OrangeSAM to post my seasonal totals for the Final Jeopardy! clues.
Yes, I'll be doing this again this year, glutton for punishment that I am.

I'll be checking this thread and this poll to for posting criteria.

Stats from seasons 29 and 30 can be found here. If there are threads with results for other seasons, I haven't bookmarked them. Season 31 stats will go in a new thread.

I'll be doing some prep work on this for the next couple of weeks, giving those folks taking summer vacation this year (I'm jealous) a chance to catch up. After that, Mark, you and I can help J!Boardies complete the polls they may have missed. Final stats should be going up around the start of season 32.

Feedback question: Those of you who said "post my seasonal totals", does that include relative ranking with the J!Board or only raw data?

5 foe 5 this week for me to end the season on a high note. :)
