CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Welcome back. Ed Kim is a small business owner from Southern California who is interested in motorcycles, but in a different way--tell us.

Ed: Yes, Alex, so, uh, when I was a kid, um, I really thought I would love to ride a motorcycle one day. Uh, but the more I thought about it and as I got older, I realized I would much rather actually ride in one of those little side cars that are attached. And, uh, with the goggles and the jacket, so, uh...

Alex: What kind of jacket?

Ed: Um...

Alex: Nothing military about it?

Ed: Oh, well, maybe.

Alex: Really?

Ed: But, uh, I think I feel this way from watching too many--too many World War I and II films.

Alex: [Chuckling] Okay. Good luck to you in that.

Ed: Thank you.

Alex: Rook Thomas Hine from Brunswick, Maine. A freelancer voice-over artist, which means we have probably heard your voice on the air.

Rook: Quiet possibly, although, I haven't been as active lately. Hoping to get back more into it. I like doing voice-over, and there's a lot of animation out there. So looking to do animation, any kind of a voice-over involving commercial, what have you.

Alex: Okay, well, good luck to you, too, as well.

Rook: Thank you.

Alex: That's a great way to make a living.

Alex: Tara Anderson is our champion, ladies and gentlemen. And she has informed us that the best gift she ever gave her mom was something people of my generation can relate to.

Tara: Yeah, I used to work at a radio station in New York City, and Tom Jones came to the station one day to do an interview. And I got him to sign a CD, personalized to my mother, and I won Christmas that year.

[Laughter]

Alex: "It's not unusual."

Tara: Mnh-mnh.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Rook found the Daily Double on the 24th clue. Tara had $4,000, Rook had $5,200, and Ed was at $3,200. Rook wagered $2,000.

SO YOU WANT TO WRITE A NOVEL $1000: Try to inspire this release of emotions like fear or pity, a term used by Aristotle
(Alex: You're on a roll today, doing well.)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Rook: $7,600
Tara: $5,800
Ed: $4,800

DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
YOU SAID WHAT?! (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
AMERICAN HISTORY (5/5)
7-LETTER WORDS (4/5)
THEIR REAL FIRST NAME (5/5)
DAYTIME TELEVISION (4/5)
THE PLACE TO "B" (4/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Tara: 11 R (including 1 DD), 0 W
Rook: 9 R (including 1 rebound), 2 W
Ed: 7 R (including 1 rebound and 1 DD), 1 W

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 3
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $4,800

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Tara snagged the next Daily Double on the 14th clue. Tara had $12,200, Rook had $14,800, and Ed was at $5,600. Tara wagered $3,000.

YOU SAID WHAT?! $1200: In a novel, Alice Walker wrote that it might anger God "if you walk by" this "in a field somewhere and don't notice it"

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Ed who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 24th clue. Tara had $19,600, Rook had $14,400, and Ed was at $8,000. Ed wagered $6,000.

THE PLACE TO "B" $800: This U.S. state capital was founded by the French in 1719

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
7-LETTER WORDS $2000: It's not just a lighthouse light; it's also the room at the top where the light is located

DAYTIME TELEVISION $800: Cedric the Entertainer & Terry Crews both hosted the daytime version of this show
(Rook: What is Family Feud?)

THE PLACE TO "B" $2000: Separating Wales & England, this channel bears the name of a port city

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Tara: $22,000
Ed: $17,200
Rook: $13,200

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
AMERICAN POEMS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Three-quarters for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
Tara: Wager $12,401 to cover Ed.
Ed: You ought to wager to cover Rook, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you should choose between wagering $0 and maximizing your winnings with a wager of all $17,200. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $9,200 (to shut out Rook) or less than $7,600 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Rook). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Tara.
Rook: Think about risking $3,600, thereby beating Tara on the Triple Stumper (should Tara wager to cover Ed's doubled score).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
The title of this poem that begins the 1916 book "Mountain Interval" was inspired by long country walks

FINAL SCORES
Rook: $13,200 - $13,200 = $0 (What is In a Yellow Wood?) (3rd place)
Ed: $17,200 - $0 = $17,200 (What is A Good Walk) (New champion: $17,200)
Tara: $22,000 - $12,500 = $9,500 (What is Song of Myself?) (2nd place)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $4,800

GAME DYNAMICS

Combined Coryat: $44,400

Tara: 21/59 = .356
Rook: 21/59 = .356
Ed: 15/59 = .254

(Alex: Be more specific.)
(Tara: Uh, [*].)

Taping for this week's shows was on August 25.

Alex was in top form. You wouldn't know he's 75.

Knew what poem they wanted, but messed up the title.

Not a good start for the new year.

(I didn't realize the poem was that old.)

And, I reflexed Boise for the state capital. Ugh.

Unfortunately, yes. I don't like that pastel blue logo on that background. The Daily Double graphics are also the same pastel blue on that background.

Anyone feel like taking over the FJ posting for the new season? I'd be willing to step aside if someone reliable wants to take on the task. The only guidance I have is to try to get the clue posted as close as possible to the top of the first page, so anyone coming here to look for the clue who hasn't seen the show will be able to see it without having to scroll down past a bunch of potentially spoilerific comments. I've generally done this by posting the placeholder post early in the day and then editing in the clue after I see the show. If there's someone who gets the show early in the day, before 7 PM Eastern, and watches it live every day, that's the perfect person for the job, so feel free to step up. You can respond to me by PM if you want to take over, rather than clutter up this thread with it, and I guess if there are multiple offers I will choose who I like best. :) I'll always be willing to step back in if someone needs a day off or a week off or whatever. Thanks in advance!

Add me among those that knew what poem they were asking for, but not the correct title. I said "The Road Less Traveled".

Strong premiere overall with a good game, although is it just me, or did some of the $2000 clues seem particularly easy for $2000?

I'm curious what Vermonter feels about the $0 wager from Ed. I get in theory as the low end of the Stratton's Dilemna, but I wonder if it's better to go super small because of Rook's wager (which I imagine/hope played into Ed's idea) or go a little bigger to cover a 0 wager from Tara.

Kinda surprised three Jeopardy contestants wouldn't know anything about daytime Millionaire, even if it is now horrible.

Good for the new champ making the late big DD pay off, even if he was a bit off in execution.

Nice for fresh games again!

This was an excellent game to start the season, except for FJ which none of the contestants knew. I had 41 correct responses including three triple stumpers: lantern, "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" and Bristol. "Think Different" was the correct response to one of the clues! Instaget FJ.

I just noticed there were no TSes in the J! round. Good start to the season.

Clammed on "tobacco" in Dangerous; not an iota of recognition in the other 4.

All but "catharsis" and "automatic" in "A"djectives and Novel. Also fell for the "Sharp Dressed Man" trap since I've NHO "Man in the Mirror", and ended up 4/5 there too.

I thought "You Said What?!" was very YEKIOYD.

Lach Trash: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? The fact that this was a TS shows how far the show has fallen in relevance. Personally, I can't believe they haven't put it out of its misery by now.

Oddly, Triangle Shirtwaist at $2000 was my only get in American History.

"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" for FJ!
