I thought it was Animal (the Muppet) at first -- I only realized it was a button when I saw the closeup here.

FJ took me about 27 seconds. I was trying to think of people associated with early photography, couldn't think of Roger Fenton's name (if I ever knew it), but then I remembered the Crimean War was after 1851, so it couldn't be him anyway. Eventually I remembered that daguerreotypes were named after a person, and I got it.

I got the Grey TS, but I don't know if I would have before about a month ago, when I was writing one of the last questions in my TD and ended up reading about Lady Jane Grey. That would make for a nice grim Wikipedia Article of the Day...

Yipes. I spent 30 seconds trying to think of any famous painters earlier than Picasso who painted war scenes, and there were a few, and I still couldn't come up with anything. Swing and a miss.

Some images, once conjured in the mind, can't easily be erased and remain there like burn-in on a cheap CRT.

Occasionally it works for somebody, but if it doesn't the contestant looks exceedingly lame. Bobby could have had the first Double Jeopardy DD if he hadn't veered off "E-Books" for "Biology."
We had complaints last night (including from me), about an extra word at the end of a response, but nobody complains when a response in "E-Readers" begins with the word "The"... :?:
Wasn't at all sure of Daguerre, but couldn't come up with another European photography pioneer. William Henry Fox Talbot didn't quite spring to mind...

FJ! for me today felt like a series of miracles. I was able to recognize Mathew Brady's name almost instantly (I learned about him my junior year of high school studying the Civil War in AcDec). My default for "photographer," Ansel Adams, came quickly to mind, but he knew he was a bit later and was stuck for a split second. Then Louis Daguerre, just like that. I don't know exactly how it happened. It just did. And I'm OK with that. :)

Also, boo hiss for not finishing the musicals category. Those were a piece of cake. I'll just imagine the two unconvered clues were from obscure musicals I've never seen or heard of. :P

Natalie seemed to be on fire today. Hope she keeps it up tomorrow.

TenPoundHammer wrote: Spent the entire 30 seconds trying to remember who Matthew Brady was, but once again, the name was just too generic to trigger anything. But as soon as Alex mentioned photography, I knew exactly who they were looking for. Curse you, generic names that don't stick in my head!
If it helps, his name is actually spelled "Mathew," which I believe is fairly rare.

After her interview, I was rooting for Audrey even more than yesterday. I've seen the Rolling Stones about 50 times and I'm traveling to Argentina in a few months to see them again. I'm also planning a cruise to the Falklands/Malvinas & Antarctica after that so it was nice to see the islands show up in the game. I've gotten every other FJ this week. Daguerre was all I could think of. Is 4 cups of coffee all that much? I don't like the stuff but I worked with people who drank 4 cups just at work!

Coryat: $24,000
34 R/4 W
DD: 2/3
FJ:
LT: Alberta, Elmer Gantry (DD), Hartford (on the rebound), inglenook (thanks Ken Jennings' Tuesday Trivia!)

Really rough start for me--maybe it was the chicken fried bacon with jalapeno gravy I had at the Rangers game--with four misses and only 16 correct in the J! round, including "gloomy" for "glum" and "gluteous" for "gluteal." FJ! took me a few seconds, as I was mixing up Mathew Brady with Matthew Perry. Once I got my brain going and realized it was the photographer and not the gunboat diplomat, it was a short trip to "French early photographer = Daguerre."

A strange Canadian fixation by the writers lately

TenPoundHammer wrote: I wonder if the "Away in a Manger" clue confused any non-Americans? The clue used "Mueller", the melody most Americans use for that carol, but nearly all other countries use "Cradle Song" instead.
Pretty much all the non-Americans here are Canadians and in Canada, both tunes are commonly heard for that song - mixing the American norm and the British norm because Canada.

Forget it, patkav, it's Canadian geography town.

For the jeopardy writers lurking here. Free question for the TOC Before and After ... Saint-Louis-du-Ha!Ha! Clinton-Dix needs to be a correct response.

Maybe Natalie was ahead of her in line and took all the coffee.

Speaking of which, I agree with Alex. Four cups a day isn't that excessive. If you've been labeled a coffee fiend, I expect to hear about intake that's measured in carafes.

MarkBarrett wrote:Tonight's FJ! was a good demonstration why I'm glad I got on the show in my 40s and not my 50s. I wrote Lumier and before I could finish it I stopped, knowing that they were brothers in the movie field later in the century. The clue was indicating one person. I had to do Mathew Brady/photographer multiple times in my head before Daguerre came to me.

While I am happy to get the solve it's discouraging to take almost half the time when it should take less than five seconds to get there.
That's all it took me. Of course, I'm still in my 40s for the next six days. I'm definitely sensing that my best opportunity for J! stardom has passed. I'd still like a crack at it though. I think. What were we talking about again?

I wouldn't want to be the one complaining (here) each time that happens, but I do yell at my TV. Besides, everyone who has ever filed a title of any kind knows that titles starting with 'the' are always filed under the second word.
