I thought of cordon bleu because of "superb dinners," but then the Holy Ghost scared me off.

If that was the TOM, it was balanced out by the... SAM? Scare-Away Metric?

SAM needs to go into the board's vocabulary link!

I came up with "madrigal" for FJ. There are madrigal dinners and I thought maybe madrigal was derived from Mary. I was pretty sure it was wrong, but I did at least put some thought into it and it was better than nothing.

What led to Audrey Hepburn on that one clue? Something about how she couldn't play Anne Frank due to some connection she had with the Holocaust?

I got the cordon bleu and didn't think it was that too far out there, and at least had a tease out in the clue, even if one was a false lead (spirit) and the other useful (the fine meals). To me, this was much better than the South Park Movie FJ, no way to tease that out without knowing, especially if they required the subtitle and not just "South Park".

Here's the clue:

1 month older than Anne Frank, this actress survived Nazi-occupied Holland & could not bring herself to portray Anne.

She was born in Brussels and also lived in The Netherlands and England.

Put me down for haute cuisine, a 0% confidence, just-say-something WAG.

Outré Cuisine Scare Away Metric, perhaps.
Or Obfuscation Causing Scare Away Metric.

That's accurate for me. French and with "superb dinners" somehow connected with "Cordon Bleu." So, something more than a completely WAG, but not quite an educated guess.

0% confidence level.

Searching for the answer first led me to this Wikipedia article when it was found in this one with a different name (Spirit, not Ghost). And it didn't help that I had only heard "cordon bleu" as the name of the veal (or chicken)-ham-cheese dish, so there was no way I was getting that.

Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

I felt really bad for Amanda that that FJ came up.

I couldn't do any better than "maitre d'" (which I knew couldn't be right), since "Knights" only led me to Templars and Hospitallers, and neither of those are phrases (or associated with food).

My best thought was chef d'oeuvre, thinking perhaps chef was related to chevalier. It seemed a little fancy, and I realize now the phrase isn't so often used about food, but it was the best I could do in 30 seconds...

If I'd ever known or thought about what cordon means (despite studying French for years) I might have gotten there.

TS's: Snake, bohrium, Roma
LT: Treasure Island (my wager would've been $50), Pitbull
Misses: Ringo Starr (Lennon), Audrey Hepburn ("Greta Garbo... SHIT, she's Swedish!")

For the 'Elements' DD, I had Iodine (I) and Uranium (U). I would probably be negged for it, but, BUT!?! (I would've viking'ed myself into a grave there.)

FJ: Got it, but after taking 27 seconds to talk it through... bon appetit, bon gout, sacre bleu... CORDON BLEU!

Dylan's run is confounding him more than us at this point.

The really weird thing is I was in the midst of composing a post the other day in the thread where we were talking about Caknuck's given name. I was trying to work Gordon Bleu into it somehow, but couldn't get the wording right, so I deleted it.

That's why I kicked myself so hard upon missing this FJ.

Let's see. I spent a few seconds stuck on that Holy Ghost distractor. (I almost said "Holy Ghost nonsense," but I would hate to offend the Trinitarians among us. And if "Holy Ghost" is relevant to this clue in any way, I have failed to appreciate it.) Then I thought, "OK, 'fine dining' could mean cordon bleu. Oh, and a blue ribbon could belong to an order of knights. OK, I got nothin' better than cordon bleu." Took about 20 seconds in all, I think.

"Cordon bleu" was an instaget the third time I looked at it.

Was also thrown off by the Holy Ghost reference and lost valuable time. Might have gotten to "cordon bleu" otherwise, but was still stuck on "haute cuisine" when time ran out.
