The Daily Double in my second episode that began to distance me from the others was about Gorky Park. I had been there, but at the hotel bar later when an opponent said he was hoping I would miss that, my response was: "C'mon man, Scorpions." I was lost on the Germany question but when I heard them, no problem.

Day 2 was way easier than Day 1 for this non participant. The hardest part for me was waiting for the Scorpions (whom I just listened to being interviewed last week) because I was only 50/50 on Alphaville's home country; other than that, insta-gets.

I couldn't place the other bands (although I thought I detected an accent, though I was heading towards "Australia"), but once I heard "Rock You Like A Hurricane", I thought "oh, this is easy! Lock it in! "Canada"".

At least there was no way I was getting to Germany. Now if instead of "Rock You Like A Hurricane" it was "Rock Me Amadeus" ... (But he's Austrian, isn't he? Ah, who cares, that's a great song, I just want to hear it)

That Cameo song is one of my 10 favourite songs of all time, so that was a snap. Big Audio Dynamite - also awesome, so the Mick Jones question came pretty quickly to me. Is there a way I can make a living playing 80's music trivia?
That's 9(6) - 6(5), right?
Yeah. I didn't ask to make a living doing math or copying/pasting stuff. That's my downfall.

And yes, dhkendall - Falco is (was) Austrian.

Count me as another who wasn't sure about Alphaville's home country but knew the Scorps' cold.

Same. Glad that clip was there or it would have been a shot in the dark for me.

It sure would have been harder for me without Scorpions in the lineup.

Ditto. I thought Germany first for Alphaville, but then was second guessing. Japan popped into my head (because of "Big in Japan, I guess). But I knew the Scorpions.

I suspect Scorpions was the clincher for most people.

As I said above, it was for me. But I seemed to be the only one who didn't know they were German.

I didn't even get to the Scorpions. I knew about Alphaville's origins (probably from doing some immersion after Jay-Z's "Young Forever" came out) and then paused the music while I dithered on whether I should add "West" (I did). I was lucky to get 3 on that one to pull out the 6(4)-4(4) win.

Later in the day I read a fascinating article about Max Martin, the Swede behind the curtain of 21 number-one hits (his first was "…Baby One More Time"). It mentioned Cameo as one of his influences. I doubt I would have looked it up but thought that was a neat coincidence.

Never even heard of the Scorpions. I got Lionel Richie and nothing else in a 8(5)-1(1) loss.

Two days, two beers! Mennoknight, let's join forces and conquer the 80's music trivia world!

Got Mick Jones from the regular season question last(?) season.

Scorpions gave me Germany. I still think of this kid in my high school German class who wore Scorpions t-shirts about every other day whenever I hear that song.

I haven't got one wrong, and I'm in third in my group.

Opponent missed Total Eclipse of the Heart and Kenny Loggins, leading to an 8(5) - 8(4) tie. I don't get it.

There's a part of me that wishes this was a bit harder. e.g. the REM clue yesterday. Wah Wah solo+dumb song=Stand. It didn't need the picture hint. I knew I was going to hear Mariah Carey's Fantasy before even clicking on the sampling question. Seeing a picture of Bonnie Tyler shouldn't elicit any response other than Total Eclipse of the Heart.

It did lead me to go watch this again though:

Heh, ditto. I spent most of the Bonnie Tyler video squinting to figure out that it's Bonnie Tyler though; she's not exactly immediately recognizable and I don't think there's a single clear shot of her face in the sample.

That was me if you add in also missing Tom Tom Club. Major head slaps on both, but c'est la vie. I loved the TOM on the Danzig question (would have got it without, but very clever)

I knew that she looked familiar, as did the video itself, but just couldn't pull it. I kept getting distracted by Flock of Seagulls and Kim Carnes, neither of which was remotely helpful. :?
