I struggled a bit with this FJ as AT likes to say. Considered Lebanon, b/c of the Cedar Forests (see flag!) but then felt SURE it was much bigger that 4K sqmi, which is only 100 miles long and 40 wide, seems tiny, so went with Qatar as well. Retro wiki reveals that desertification is occurring there, however. What an odd FJ!
44R; LT: flappers; judo; rubber tree (ficus elasticus); Livy; speaking in tongues; takes 2 to tango; Adlai Stevenson (d. 1965); no get on Lilith: "Tempted."

Lebanon is a sliver of a country so I was relatively confident in my answer. Also they have actual ski resorts there. I miss Matt. This new guy sure is loud and there seemed to be a ton of TSs today.

I think Hell on Wheels has achieved the rare status of being a Nonuple Stumper (or maybe even a Duodeculple Stumper - I am too lazy to check the archive). And I confess that even though I remembered those past clues, I still could not call the exact title to mind!

I said Bahrain for FJ. I was just a little off in terms of the size.

Pretty simple rule: if it's on the Arabian peninsula, it's desert. So Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, UAE -- all out.

I won't say it was an instaget, but it was a pretty easy get.

Bahrain isn't on the Arabian Peninsula. It's part of that peninsula in the same sense that Malta is part of Europe. I suppose it makes sense that it would share the peninsula's climate. But I figured maybe things weren't so desert-y right along the coast. And since Bahrain is all coast, I figured maybe the desert didn't stand a chance. I didn't consider Lebanon. But if I had, I would've rejected it in favor of Bahrain, just as Mike Zerg did.

Bahrain isn't part of the Arabian peninsula like Long Island isn't part of New York. I ain't taking geography lessons from no waterfowl!

It wasn't just not looking for the DD. Josh had a lock game advantage by more than 2000 IIRC, and Michael went to the top of the board when bottom row money was available.
Even after Alex gave the LTAM, he continued going down the order. His DD underwager not only left him at more of a disadvantage for FJ, it virtually eliminated Dana's chance to win the game on a sole get.
I didn't like his FJ wager either. Josh was going to have to get it wrong for Michael to win anyway. It didn't dawn on him that he could win with an incorrect response if he didn't bet over 1400? Makes me think his Wednesday final wager was more about math than strategy.

Coryat: $28,800
38 R/1 W
DD: 2/3
FJ:
LT: flappers, judo, rubber plant, "Tempted", speaking in tongues, "it takes two to tango"

Narrowly missed having my first no-neg game of the season by answering Homicide: Life on the Streets. Dangit. Also went 50/50/90 on Apollo/Gemini. Knew that the Gemini missions were so named for having two astronauts aboard but couldn't shake that four years between Apollos 1 and 11 seemed to make perfect sense. Took about 25 seconds to convince myself that Lebanon might only be 4,000 square miles, but I finally figured that a cedar forest was a far better answer than any of the Arabian Peninsula countries, all of which are smack-dab in the desert.

Josh, huh?

I said Jordan just to say something. Given that I'm fairly bad at geography, it's not the worst guess I've ever made, but I think there was enough knowledge in my brain to have gotten the correct response.

Agree with econgator that two astronauts should lead to Gemini, not Apollo.

Editing (very belatedly) to correct attribution.

+1 That's a gift DD that any J! player should be able to convert into more money.

It's easy on YouTube to find Josh Silverman doing stand up comedy. I was not able to find Dana Desprois's cat. Iggy? Iggie?

RFK for Adlai Stevenson? Did not see that one coming.

I guess the writers are determined to see Hell on Wheels hit even with the poor batting percentage by the players. The final episodes air in 2016 and then I would not expect it to appear again on J!

THE MIDDLE EAST and that kind of clue. Well, there is little doubt I'm going to make a mess of it. First I ruled out Kuwait & Iraq because of its appearance in a previous clue. I ruled out Israel because of the Negev Desert. While doing that I counted out Lebanon for being nearby. Jordan and Syria were out for size along with of course Iran.

No, I'm not crazy enough to guess Saudi Arabia. That left me with Yemen, Oman and Qatar because I'm not savvy enough to even think of Bahrain in 30 seconds. My reasoning for ruling out Qatar was talk about the upcoming World Cup being too hot, so desert.

I wrote Yemen because I knew it bordered some water on the bottom and by that time I had given up on thinking about how small 4000 sq. miles might be.

Good for Josh to get it and make it a clear cut victory.

Nice job! But I'll disagree you on 'silliness' – the Demon-stration category was one of the best this season, IMO.

I misread the "Tempted" clue and didn't realize it was talking about Squeeze the band. Instead I read "squeeze hit" as suicide squeeze. Clam.

OK, I finally worked up the courage to watch. This game was a complete blur, and I don't remember answering 80 percent of the clues that I did. Nor do I remember why I named a Greek in a category about Romans. I have absolutely no idea why I just sat there on "two to tango" and "speaking in tongues." I do know why I just sat there at flapper, which seemed way too obvious for a $1,000 question and had me running through F. Scott Fitzgerald categories before I ran out of time.

And speaking of things that seem way too obvious, my new advice learned in Final: If something comes to you right away and you're sure it's right, don't overthink it!

Fortunately, it didn't really matter at that point. Josh was a ball of energy and out-buzzed me. That adrenaline crash/post-lunch lethargy kills us old folks. ;) Congrats and best wishes to Josh, and a special shout-out to Dana, who was my buddy for the day ever since we sat next to each other on the shuttle.

Did anyone else feel like Josh acted like their was a podium mike in front of him? :)

I think Lebanon not having a desert is sort of BS. Look at it on Google Maps. The eastern part looks like a desert to me.

I would have thought the phrase "Cedars of Lebanon" would be moderately well known, even if the actual cedars of Lebanon are not. A quick Google search shows that it's the title of a U2 song, a Tennessee State Park, and a Salt Lake City restaurant, and is referenced several times in the Bible.

hbomb1947 wrote:Well, that was embarrassing. I was looking in the wrong part of the Middle East, and went with a random country (Oman) which turns out to be nearly 120,000 square miles. Qatar (4,468 square miles), which I also considered, would have been a better guess.

So is Lebanon's lack of a desert that well-known? Is it one of those YEKIOYD facts?

As for the game itself, it was bound to be a letdown after the excitement of last night. I was disappointed that Mike wasn't hunting for a DD until the very end, despite being in a trailing situation -- and then he underwagered when he found it. Not that it (or his FJ overwager) mattered in the end, with Josh's sole solve.

I thought that DD was neg-baity, by the way; Apollo 1 was only 2 years later, in 1967 (although tragically it never got off the ground, which I guess is the key thing to know there).
Lebanon known in various times times for its timber. In a country of that size in that region, I call that a good clue if the question is 'no desert'. Felt bad for the champ. With the bets it didn't matter, but crossing out the wrong answer? Ouch.

I'm so used to every country being bigger than it looks on a map that even though Lebanon was the first one I thought of, I dismissed it because I thought it was probably larger than 4000 sq. mi. I think I said Bahrain, based on the same bigger-than-it-looks principle.

I got Hell on Wheels, though it went more like "Wheel! Of! Hell! No, Hell on Wheels!"

FWIW, the word 'desert' only shows up twice here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography_of_Lebanon , once referring to Egyptian winds, the other to 'desertification.' Never as a geographic feature.

If you can find a named desert in Lebanon, that might help your case a bit more.

My thought process was Michael in reverse. Bahrain first, then switched to Lebanon after thinking, no, it's on the wrong side of Saudi Arabia
