Would they have negged a player who didn't include the "The," since that's supposedly what makes it a double redundancy?

I wrote "Who are the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim?" even though I wasn't sure if "of Anaheim" was still part of the name. It seems like they change their name every half-hour or so.

I think "Angels" would have sufficed; although the clue was about the team's full name, I don't believe the response had to be (the clue said "the full name of this... team") so any question unambiguously referring to them would have been accepted.

I don't get the hate on the FJ! clue. Sure, you can argue about whether "The" is part of the full name of the team, but the Angels are the only team with even one true redundancy. And it's not like you had to be some sort of a cunning linguist, given that "Angels" and "Angeles" are cognates separated by a single letter.

The Chicago clue mentioned State Street, which is pretty much a giveaway(like Park Avenue for NY, or Lombard Street for SF).

Because no other town has a State Street, right? There were TWO in the backwater town where I spent most of my life.

But it's a case of what J! is likely to ask about. I will make it a True Daily Double that if you do an Archive search, Chicago will come up more often than your hometown. There's a Lombard St that's pretty well known here in Winnipeg (the building I worked in from 2000-2010 was on it), but the world famous one is in Frisco. (Having said that, when I hear "State Street" I think Atlantic City has an equal shot at notoriety thanks to Monopoly.

There are always going to be a certain number of people who just 'shut down' clues like this...'EEEEWWW! It's sports/wordplay/wordplay about sports!'...but I think this one might have been easier than some would suggest.

It was no trouble for elites like you and me. But I can see how it would seem a tad difficult to the hoi polloi masses.

This was a fairly quick FJ get for me (not instant but quick); living in San Diego made it pretty easy.

Started with the Padres: nope, San Diego doesn’t translate to “father”
Next up: Los Angeles = The Angels, um “that’s it!”
Done.
(Not a big baseball fan so neither Anaheim Angels or California Angels deterred me from the correct answer)

Actually, the company I worked for had offices on the 16th floor of the Richardson Building (second tallest building in Winnipeg), whose address is technically "1 Lombard Place", although really it should be Main Street, as "Lombard Place" doesn't seem to actually be a street, it just seems to be what a couple of buildings in the Richardson complex (the Richardson Building and the Fairmont Hotel) are called) (I guess somewhat like the World Trade Center?). But, the Richardson Building is on the corner of Main Street and Lombard Avenue (and Portage Avenue).

Originally, the stadium lease required "Anaheim" in the name. Now, Anaheim is not required in the new lease.

I always hated that the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim was alphabetically among the M's during introductions at the NHL All-Star Game. Now they're just the Anaheim Ducks.

+1 on hate the FJ Clue. I blurted out San Diego Padres at about 23 seconds, feeling really good about myself for "The Father Father". Oops But yeah, we spent a few seconds discussing what a "double redundancy" was, and it wasn't until at least halfway through that I even thought about "translating" referring to a Spanish city name. Plus the "of Anaheim" doesn't fit in with the rest of it; I would have thought it was just the redundant word/phrases and not extra like that. All in all, pretty awkward FJ IMO.

If you include "The" in the name, then the name can even be considered triple-redundant: the x 2, angels x 2, city name x 2.

The most obvious redundancy is that LA already has the Dodgers and so the Angels are superfluous.

BTW, Mike Trout, the pitcher is an Angel, right? He comes from my county in NJ.

I don't know about Mike Trout the pitcher, but Mike Trout the outfielder plays for the Los Angeles Angels and is from New Jersey. Jersey Mike's lost a prime endorsement when he went to Subway.

Actually, I am on Team TPH for once, although of course he puts it overly aggressively as usual. (Maybe I should say Team Vermonter, since he also noted this.) The one in Boston is also pretty prominent.
