I wondered about that. When Alex announced the reversal, I figured he was going to say the researchers had found some examples of that spelling. Then he didn't and I forgot to follow up on the possibility. Thanks.

And at any rate, regardless of the spelling, there are only two consonant sounds in "mutt," distinct or otherwise. The second 't' does not actually represent a sound in addition to, and separate from, the first one.

Well, yes. But if they had had a clue where 'debt' might be a correct response, it still wouldn't fit the category as explained.
