Nicole Stanley, a medical student from Portland, Oregon
Joyce Hshieh, an actress and writer from Chicago, Illinois (whose 2-day cash winnings total $26,602)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thanks, Johnny. And thank you, ladies and gentlemen. On yesterday's program, Joyce relaxed a lot more and developed a good rhythm, and wound up winning a fair amount of money. Nicole and Brad, I'm delighted to welcome you to our program. It could happen to you as well. So good luck to all three of you. Here we go. And here are the categories. First off, you get to deal with...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
A FETA COMPLI (3/3)
VERBS (4/5)
WORKING BOOK TITLES (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
SHIP SHAPE (3/5)
CITY WALK (5/5)
REALITY SHOW SENDOFF LINES (5/5)

WORKING BOOK TITLES $800: John Steinbeck changed "Something That Happened" to this title, a reference to a Robert Burns poem
(Alex: "The best laid plans [*].")

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Joyce: $4,200
Nicole: $1,200
Brad: $1,000

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Brad Rudy is a retired railroad analyst. I'm not sure what that means exactly.

Brad: Well, basically, what I did is, I made computer models of the railroad and I played with them.

Alex: So you played with toy trains?

Brad: No. No, no, no, it's to see if a planned, uh, structural change that costs millions and millions of dollars will actually do what you want it to do. Like a siding--will trains actually be able to get on it?

Alex: Ah.

Brad: Or will the schedule just make them all avoid it?

Alex: Still a great way to travel.

Brad: Uh-huh.

[Apparent edit]

Brad: [Without his lips moving, as the result of the apparent edit] Tell me.

Alex: Nicole Stanley is a medical student. Got married.

Nicole: Yep.

Alex: Weddings are happy events. Yours was made even more special because of something your sister did.

Nicole: It was wonderful. I love the Muppets. I loved Jim Henson. And when my husband Asa and I were married two years ago, we had no idea that my sister and her husband had had Muppets made to look like us. And then they surprised us at the wedding by singing the song that Miss Piggy and Kermit sing when they get married at the end of Muppets take Manhattan.

Alex: Oh, gosh.

Nicole: It was wonderful.

Alex: Did you get to keep...

Nicole: Oh, yes.

Alex: ...the Muppets?

Nicole: Oh, yeah.

Alex: Okay. Drag 'em out from time to time. Have fun.

Alex: Joyce Hshieh is our champion. She's an actress. We mentioned that in her intro on a couple of occasions now. And you starred in an independent film, and it was a--a microbudget film. What does that mean? How much money are we talking about here?

Joyce: Around $30,000.

Alex: Oh.

Joyce: Very, very small. Um, so to keep costs low, they kept the story within one set. So it takes place in a bomb shelter, and there's only five characters, so...

Alex: Are we likely to ever see this motion picture?

Joyce: Um... you can find it online.

Alex: Nice to know.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
VERBS $1000: A school attended by Lord Byron & Winston Churchill; as a verb, it means to inflict great stress

SHIP SHAPE $1000: A 1922 treaty limited these naval vessels to 35,000 tons displacement; the limit didn't last long

SHIP SHAPE $800: A catamaran is instantly recognizable by its twin these
(Brad: What are masts?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Joyce: $6,400
Brad: $2,600
Nicole: $1,600

While I understand the scenario causing the pre-empting, I often wonder about the people who were on this episode .. in some places, it may never air. I can't imagine the weird, conflicting feelings that must bring.

Someone asked Trebek about this on a podcast, I believe he said they'll mail a tape if they ask.

And if they actually said something, that would be fine. More often than not they preempt it so some talking head can say some combination of, "We have no further information", or "We can't comment on that now".

It looks like Wheel and Jeopardy are airing in Atlanta at the scheduled time, but bumped to the MyNetworkTV affiliate. (I guess that station's good for something.)

Right after I submit that, Andy Griffith comes on the MyNetworkTV affiliate, and I have to change quickly to the normal channel.

Alex: oooh, sorry

Burt Reynolds: what is a buffalo?

Alex: say what? Uh, no

Sean Connery: what is a sheep?

A sports category in a game with two female contestants, good luck seeing all five clues.

Still scratching my head over the champ's wager. Figure in a couple of hours my head will scab over..... :D
