CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: We're gonna be talking about animals with the contestants on the program today. Jon Rossiter, I hear that on a visit to Africa, you did something that I would be very scared to do. You hip-checked a baboon?

Jon: Yeah, so I just arrived in--in Cape Town earlier that day, and I was touring around the Cape of Good Hope, and I saw my first ever monkey in the wild. It was amazing! And so I asked the person I was with if I could just get out of the car to take a picture of it. And before I could even figure out where the, uh, button on my camera was, the baboon was right there and was trying to get into the car. And so I had to literally just get it out of there with my hip. Uh, it was absolutely terrifying at the time, but it's pretty hilarious today.

Alex: You know, baboons have teeth that are...

Jon: Oh, they're nasty. Yeah.

Alex: Very nasty, indeed.

Jon: Yeah, I'm lucky.

[Laughter]

Alex: You're lucky to be here.

Alex: Alexandra Whitehill Smith is from South Carolina.

Alexandra: I am.

Alex: This young lady worked in a zoo for three years.

Alexandra: I did, yeah.

Alex: With what animal?

Alexandra: Um, no animals, just other humans. I worked in the membership department. So I did administrative stuff. I was behind a desk all day.

Alex: Ah.

Alexandra: Um, but I would go over sometimes during my lunch break to, like, the petting zoo, um, or to see some of my other favorite animals.

Alex: Favorite animal in the zoo--what was it?

Alexandra: Oh, okay. So I like the black-footed cat a lot. Um, I like spotted hyenas, and then, um, sloths.

Alex: Spotted hyenas.

Alexandra: Yes.

Alex: They smell, don't they?

Alexandra: They are. They're stinky, but they're--they're neat.

[Laughter]

Alex: Okay, that's a good way to describe them.

Alex: Kelly Wright is our champion. Lives with many, many animals.

Kelly: Uh, a small hobby farm of 15 sheep, uh, 2 goats, 4, 5, 6 cats--you lose track--uh, and a dog.

Alex: [Laughs] Okay.

Alex just keeps spewing absolute gold in his opening monologues. It's getting embarrassing. Let's get to the categories already. Oh, first off we have "classical reggae, mon". I want to cry.

Thankfully the game was not that bad. But hey, if you're going on Jeopardy!, maybe read Alex's wikipedia page just in case you have to know where he's from. Also, Canadian bay ≠ Hudson Bay. I guess Rob just assumed that was pavlovian? And does he really think that's what Hudson Bay looks like?

I said Mennonite for FJ! because of how many there are in Manitoba, but I kinda knew that wasn't technically a denomination. Ah well.

For me, Canada + Bay = Fundy.

Being old helped me get Guy Lombardo. He had a New Years Eve show for years but he died around 1980. No way those kiddies were getting him. The guy from Wednesday probably was mad it wasn't in his game.

Instaget FJ for me to complete a perfect week.

The Paul Schafer guess is an uglier Canadian misstep IMO.

Instaget FJ ... I thought of Marshall's family on How I Met Your Mother.

Started off with Protestants, but it seemed too broad, so I did narrow it down to Lutherans in time.

Congrats to Jon on his win. I had 44 correct responses including five triple stumpers: cathode ray tube, Johann Strauss, moss, Sudbury, and Guy Lombardo. I also got the missed DD of rooster. Instaget FJ.

I knew FJ because when I visited my friend who was studying to be a Lutheran minister, he told me he had to find a wife before he graduated, "because they send all the single ministers to little towns in Minnesota". I presume that if the minister is married, they get more consideration based on where his or her spouse's career is located.

39 correct, 4 wrong, 15 clams for a Coryats of $22,400. (I whiffed on three bottom-row clues, two of them in DJ, which hurt.) Ran TV and Published Posthumously, and missed the chance on Alternative Medicine as the $2000 went unrevealed. LT: moss, cathode ray tube, Bay of Fundy (DD), rooster (DD).

Was "Nassau House" enough to give someone Princeton for the Art and History DD? I don't recall getting a year. My first two thoughts were Yorktown and Trenton, though in retrospect the weather depicted was obviously not correct for the latter.

By only using "auld," I assumed the Canadian Landmarks DD was someone named "Lang." I was aware of Guy Lombardo and his NYE shows, but didn't realize he was a Canuck.

Missed on FJ!; didn't know that was a popular area for Lutherans. The only prominent Minnesotan whose religion I was sure of was Jewish, and I knew that couldn't be correct. I also put down Quakers for lack of a better guess.

Oh god those tunes were awful. I could barely make out the underlying classical pieces, and if the clues hadn't given me an idea of what to 'expect', I'm not sure I would've gotten the Brahms or Strauss clues.

Having lived in Nassau County, I said the same thing as the champ. There even was a Battle of Long Island, so it's not a bad guess (even if it actually took place in Brooklyn).

Did anyone record the game? Please let me know via private message. It got pre-empted here due to high school football.

.
I guess it helped me to have some familiarity with the campus of Princeton U., and knowing that it has a Nassau Hall (I didn't realize that building opened in 1754, but of course lots of things on that campus are pretty old). Putting that detail together with knowing that there was a battle of Princeton helped me solve that DD. Also, the Battle of Long Island is an alternate name for the Battle of Brooklyn, so although part of Long Island today consists of Nassau County, that battle wasn't fought in that area; you wouldn't expect to find a Nassau Hall in Brooklyn.

Instaget FJ. I'm bummed that going the wrong way on a 50-50-90 on Wednesday's FJ cost me a perfect week.

Seeing "Gilligan's Island" as a bottom-row clue made me feel old. :o

Much much much much better game than yesterday. No Yugos today. :D The new champ looks pretty solid.

A very deflating game.

The new champ stumbled his way to a win. For most of the game, he seemed to be channeling Shea from earlier in the week.

Alexandra climbed to the brink of a runaway, but she couldn't bring it home with FJ. And what an easy question!

So many missed obvious clues: Guy Lombardo, Alex's home town.

The Guy Lombardo Museum & Music Center is now closed.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

I just started reading The Way of All Flesh by Samuel Butler yesterday and really wanted it to come up in "Published Posthumously" but no dice. It's only mentioned 4 times in the archive.

Nassau County wasn't created until 1899 after it broke away from Queens, but Nassau was an early Dutch name for Long Island, named, ironically enough, for the guy who would become William III of England.

Why? This is only the second time that the writers have ever asked where Alex is from in a clue -- and the first time, which was over nine years ago, they gave you the city in anagrammed form.

http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?g ... ht=sudbury

And now that they just asked it, it's unlikely to come up again before he retires.

There are much better ways to allocate one's resources when preparing for J! than reading Alex's wiki page.

Of course, many if not most hardcore fans of the show already knew what town Alex hailed from.
