Agree that both Kennedy and Marsalis should have been BMS'd. In the latter case, I was on the verge of saying that, but clammed because I was unsure of his lifespan, thinking Wynton was Branford's father, not his brother.
The only novel that entered my head during Final was
Nineteen Eighty-Four; even though I was fairly certain it was published later than 1945, my brain stuck on it and couldn't make the short leap to the correct response.

And as I stated, it is the bigger historical rivalry, just as USC-UCLA also is a bigger historical rivalry involving USC. My initial comment was about CURRENT (last 10 years or so) rivalry, which does indeed extend beyond football to sports like water polo, swimming, volleyball, and track. But the ire is often "best" expressed during football tailgates.

I was surprised, too. Having said that, I couldn't remember his first name and blurted out Marsalis and hoped for the best.
My first thought on FJ was 1984, then had a panic when I realized it was a few years too early. Fortunately, since my mind was already on Orwell I was able to switch to the correct response - one of my favorite books, actually.

This is the second time I've used this expression in a couple of weeks, but Whitman's appearance, all by itself, is iconic.
Forgetting about the 1948 reversal, I spent too much time fretting about
1984, but in the end I realized
Animal Farm just fit the clue better.

I think contestants should get the value of the clue for providing the last name. But then they should have a double-or-nothing opportunity to supply the first name as well. If they decline or get it wrong, the other two contestants have a chance to buzz in for that money on the rebound.

Having Zidane for the penalties, who was one of the all-time greats and also an excellent penalty taker, could very well have turned the tide towards the French, so I tend to agree with Mark on this one. Man, if only Soccer was a category on Jeopardy more frequently...

The word "parable" in the FJ! clue cinched it for me.
"Catwalk" is a pretty absentminded response to a clue about theoretical passages whose alternate name includes Einstein. Then again, I absentmindedly answered "I-bar" instead of "I-beam," so who am I to judge?

agreed. granddaddy ellis marsalis and daddy ellis marsalis, jr. (pianist), were the progenitors of four jazz kids. there is little difference between wynton (trumpet), bradford (sax), delfeayo (trombone) and jason (drums).
It's Branford, and I suspect that they did not BMS because they showed a picture of Wynton playing his trumpet.
That's not a good reason not to BMS. I suspect there are many people who know that Branford and Wynton are both jazz musicians, but couldn't tell you which one is which. *raises hand*

The only reason I got it (and said "Who is Marsalis?" at home to hedge my bets) is that I remember how Brantford looked from his Tonight Show days.

I remember they tried that once. The fact that it's very rarely brought up, even in these parts, shows what a spectacular failure that was and why it Must Never Be Spoken Of Again.

Same here, but I didn't really think it was possible for an adult from a southern state to have not heard Alabama and Crimson Tide so often over the years that it would be automatic, even for someone who doesn't follow sports.

Well, he is from North Carolina (or at least he lives there now), which isn't an SEC state, so maybe he isn't that exposed to them that much.
I also post on an Alabama sports board. We had a bit of fun with it there as well.
