Random question: I've seen that the winners of different events get medals, but is there any prize money at stake?
I'm not opposed to throwing down a couple hundred bucks for entertainment in Vegas, but I'd definitely be MORE willing if there was at least a tiny chance I could recoup some of it. I'd be a massive underdog in most individual events (assuming the tippy-top of LLamadom were playing) but I think I could put together some competitive groups for the team events. Much easier to bring my fellow nerds to the desert if I can sell them on some prize money.

No, there's no prize money at stake in the TCONA events, but if you slip away and wander over to the tables . . .LHamilton wrote:Thanks so much to everyone who's responded with their personal PRO/CON lists so far!

I am the exact same way, and I went by myself both years and still had a great time. The social aspect of it should be the least of your worries; trust me!Linear Gnome wrote:I do lots of traveling by myself, but I'm leery about going to something like this by myself. that sounds a lot like me, which is why I talked myself out of going to TCONA4. I went to TCONA5 and had a blast.Linear Gnome wrote:I do lots of traveling by myself, but I'm leery about going to something like this by myself. All that having been said, I'd really like to go at least once.
Pros:
My quizbowl team that was assembled through this board consisted of three other very nice people that I got along well with. Most of the time we "stuck" together even when we weren't playing quizbowl.
Competitive 5x5 is probably the closest thing I'll get to being on Jeopardy... and I actually made the semifinals (where I got my ass handed to me). But, it looks like 5x5 will not be at TCONA6.
A group of game show geeks (Home Game Enterprizes) from the LA area hosted Game Shows on Tap on the Friday night. It's like bar trivia night but with game shows and was really fun.
Colby Burnett - god this guy is awesome. If I had known how cool he was I would've rooted for him in the BotD.
I got to meet and take pictures with Brad Rutter...though I didn't really converse with him.
24hr game-show marathon. I didn't like this as much as others because some of the games are pretty obscure. Match Game was my favorite, and I also liked the Weakest Link and Press Your Luck.
Cons:
I didn't like the nightly pub quizzes that much.
Quizbowl questions are hard, very hard. They were way out of my league. I would probably skip quizbowl this year if 5x5 hadn't gotten the axe.
I didn't participate in the scavenger hunt, so I won't comment on that.
The disorganization of the event overall had to do with the fact that they were missing some buzzer systems and had to rearrange quizbowl times because of that.

I will be there with a few other "Wheel of Fortune" alums in tow. Team name ideas include "Confirming the Stereotype" (as we go down in flames most likely in any team competition) or more likely "Wheelin' and Dealin' " where we offer $20 to each team beforehand to throw the match in our favor.

I may be going to TCONA7. I enjoyed TCONA5, but I have too much going on this summer. I will say that my favorite was 5x5; it is too bad this is not returning.

For those of you who are still pondering whether or not to go to TCONA this year:
First of all, if you haven't yet registered, please use promo code LAST16 when registering--until June 30, it's good for an extra 10% off the fee!
Second, I hope you'll join me to play my brand-new event, "Last Quizzer Standing!" Which most assuredly is definitely not Fifteen to One. Although it will feel a lot like Fifteen to One. And has pretty much the same rules as Fifteen to One. But is definitely not Fifteen to One. Time still TBD, but it looks like I'll be hosting two games a day on Friday and Saturday.
This will be my first time at TCONA, but I can't wait to meet those of you who are going!

Re: TCONA6
This is something I've always wanted to attend but finances always make trips like this difficult (as evidenced by the GoFundMe I needed just to get to my audition - heaven knows what I'll do if/when I get The Call!
Also disappointed that knodgeball won't be returning as that's something I'd love to try or at least see live!
The highlights posted by others are what I'd go to TCONA to see.
Instead of going to TCONA this year, I'll have to stay in T'cona. (The area of Winnipeg I live in is called Transcona, which I've seen shortened to T'cona before)

Re: TCONA6
I am looking for each of the following for TCONA. Please reply in-thread or by PM if you are interested.
Quiz Bowl: Following her stellar performance in this year's J! Teachers Tournament, Jillyjill has decided she is too good for our team and has flown the coop. (Actually, she has a conflict that won't allow her to attend TCONA this year.) As a result, Johnblue, cf1140 and I are looking for a fourth for our Quiz Bowl team. What we lack in knowledge we make for in mediocrity.
Trash Tournament: I am looking for two partners for the Trash Tournament. I am particularly strong in sports and '60s-'90s pop music and television. If you have a complementary knowledge set (any/all of movies, recent TV and pop music, really hardcore on sports), let's team up and give this thing a shot.
Roommate: I have a double room booked for Thursday-Sunday at the Tropicana. I am fairly tidy, not much of a snorer, and generally easy to get along with.

I am interested in going for the first time.
Anyone need a player for a team? I am not the best Llama, but I am decent at history/literature, some sports, but not really pop culture. I am very friendly, love to joke around, and have a good time but still win.

Re: TCONA6
I am so bummed to miss TCONA this year! I am actually going to try to rally my fellow 2016 Teacher Tournament buddies for a 2017 TCONA showing. But I'll forever be one of Jennifer Morrow's Backup Dancers, baby! Jennifer is, perhaps, attending this year?BigDaddyMatty wrote:I am looking for each of the following for TCONA. Have a great time, everyone! The TRASH tourney is right up my alley and I hate missing it! But Matty knows WAY more than I do across the board. Get on his TRASH team but do NOT play that man in Blockbusters. Just, don't do it. Also, Cf1140 and John are smart, great folk. They are a great group of guys!

I am, of course, obliged to remind potential TCONA-goers that if you haven't yet registered, you can use my promo code LAST16 until June 30 to get 10% off.
Also, I just got my timeslots for Last Quizzer Standing: 9-11 pm on Friday, 8-10:30 pm on Saturday. There will be two games per timeslot. If you're interested in playing on either of those days, let me know through this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1NzboLI ... Q/viewform

I assume by "the day before," you mean August 11. I already have tickets to be at the early (11:45 am) taping that day. I know there will be many people more qualified than I in Vegas that weekend, but I'm available if you need a +1.

Hey all, I cracked and will be going to TCONA this year.
I didn't want to start a new thread but I wanted to ask which boardies will be going this year as well.
More importantly, I wanted to know who would be interested in playing with me on a quiz bowl team and for trash of the titans. More trash is always welcome. PM or hit me up on here and we can go from there.
