Game Recap for Show #7279, 2016-04-14

CONTESTANTS
Margaret Miles, a librarian from Wilmington, North Carolina
Hannah Gage, an archivist originally from Newport, Oregon
Carter Spires, a law student originally from Birmingham, Alabama (whose 2-day cash winnings total $31,200)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. As you all know, I usually start off the program by talking about our returning champion or yesterday's game. But today, with your indulgence, I want to change all of that for a personal note. I want to send out birthday greetings to a longtime fan of Jeopardy!--a woman named Lucille, who today celebrates her 95th birthday. [Alex chokes up a bit] Way to go, Ma!

[Cheers and applause]

Alex: All right. Margaret, Hannah, and Carter, let's go to work. Here are the categories for you...

HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART II $800: A play in 5 acts, or a king in 2 years, 1483 to 1485

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Margaret: $7,600
Carter: $1,600
Hannah: $600

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. Margaret Miles, you are a librarian, and I say this as a compliment--you have the demeanor of a librarian. You're very calm, you're very--and you know a lot. I mean, you're leading now with 7,600 bucks. What do you do for fun?

Margaret: What do I do for fun? [Deadpan] Knit.

[Laughter]

Margaret: And pet cats. I'm hopelessly stereotypical.

[Laughter]

Alex: I love it! I love it!

Alex: Hannah Gage is an archivist--

Hannah: Yes.

Alex: --from Newport, Oregon, who is, obviously, a big Bette Davis fan.

Hannah: Yes.

Alex: Now tell me, where have you seen all of these performances of--is it of Bette Davis, by Bette Davis?

Hannah: By Bette Davis. Um, I've seen 118 at last count. Um...

Alex: I didn't know she made that many films.

Hannah: There's more.

Alex: Really?

Hannah: I mean, I'm missing some. I'm missing some, well, not very important or exciting ones, but I'm missing some.

Alex: And where do you get to see these? Because when we're talking about old Bette Davis films, there aren't that many places. Even Turner Classic Movies will not show all of them.

Hannah: They're starting to kind of work their way through back catalogs and release them on DVD now, which is great.

Alex: Ah. That's--

Hannah: Otherwise you have sort of less legal means.

[Laughter]

Alex: Okay.

Alex: Speaking of legal means, Carter Spires, our champ, is a law student who is also a singer in a group?

Carter: Uh, yes. Um, the--there is an a cappella group at my law school called the Footnotes, which I am a part of.

Alex: [Laughs] How appropriate for a law school. And, by the tone of your voice, are you up there, a tenor? You're not a--

Carter: Uh, baritone.

Alex: Baritone?

Carter: Mm-hmm.

Alex: And what kind of music do you guys perform?

Carter: Um, mostly pop-type stuff. We don't--we only get to practice, like, an hour a week, so we kind of do stuff that's popular and fun to make up for the fact that we're not the most polished group.

[Laughter]

Alex: I guess you don't do Gilbert and Sullivan, then.

Carter: Not exactly.

Alex: All right.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
HORNS YOU CAN'T PLAY $600: It's the most frequently caught fish in the Bighorn River

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Margaret: $13,000
Carter: $4,800
Hannah: -$200

Carter: 11 R (including 1 DD), 1 W
Hannah: 6 R (including 1 rebound), 0 W

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 0
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $0

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Carter snagged the next Daily Double on the 4th clue. Carter had $6,800, Hannah had $200, and Margaret was at $13,000. Carter wagered $3,200.

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS $1600: Flags of the Revolutionary War included ones featuring a rattlesnake & this 4-word warning

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Margaret who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 9th clue. Carter had $12,000, Hannah had $600, and Margaret was at $13,800. Margaret wagered $3,800.

6 CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF THEIR NOVELS $1200: Young Civil War soldier Henry Fleming
(Alex: I knew you were gonna get it right. I knew it.)

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Margaret: $32,000
Carter: $20,000
Hannah: $5,400

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
NORTH AMERICAN GEOGRAPHY

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Margaret: Wager $8,001 to cover Carter, but no more than $21,199 so as not to fall behind Hannah's doubled score.
Carter: You have the hope of surpassing Margaret if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $12,001 to force Margaret to wager to win; but if you're intent on holding on to second place, wager no more than $9,199 to protect your second place position from being usurped by Hannah.
Hannah: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Far from New England, it's the state that has the shortest land border with Canada, only 45 miles

FINAL SCORES
Hannah: $5,400 - $5,400 = $0 (What is Michigan Ne Michiu) (3rd place)
Carter: $20,000 + $12,001 = $32,001 (What is Idaho?) (2nd place)
Margaret: $32,000 + $8,100 = $40,100 (What is Idaho?) (New champion: $40,100)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $600

I could watch those three play every day for a week.

Margaret, however, is a rock star. (And congrats to Carter for keeping it relatively close).

We got through both boards without a LTaM warning, eh? *glares at the editors* OK then...OK.

Mentally got lost around the Great Lakes before rereading the damn clue and getting it right.

Great game by Margaret.

So a librarian wagered only $3800 (of ~13k) on a middle row DD clue about classic literature? Sometimes you just gotta laugh at all this wagering not to lose.

But she played a most impressive game.

Kind of thinking quite a few armchair score posters are going to claim >50 right, seemed like a much easier game than normal. And FJ was preschool week.

Great game by Margaret; congrats to her on the win. I had 46 correct responses including one triple stumper: trout. I got FJ before Alex finished reading the clue.

I think this FJ was slightly harder than Tuesdays, but not much.

Margaret is awesome - excited to see her play some more.

I'd have probably guessed New Hampshire for FJ! if not for the TOM. That might've made it a little too easy, but a right answer's a right answer.

44R, 4W. 1/3 on DD (bad at Lit, I guess). Instaget FJ.

Did they specify land border? Because according to wikipedia, Pennsylvania's maritime border is the shortest.

Got my highest Coryat over the last two seasons.

Pennsylvania has a 42 mile maritime border, but is not too far from New England.

I guess Carter was glad it wasn't Central American geography.

Wow, what a performance by Margaret. I usually root for an older player, but she was especially fun to watch with a deep knowledge base. Yes, she should have gone bigger on the Lit DD, but great job otherwise.

The not in New England hint made it a snap.

Yes, they did.

Margaret was slow-talking, but I wish every librarian I had to deal with was like her. She seems to know her stuff.

Margaret was indeed formidable, the audience was awestruck.

I laughed when Alex asked her what she did for fun and she said "knitting" - she had indeed spent every free moment knitting from the time the shuttle dropped us off at the studio that morning.

That does tend to be what we do ;) I was rooting for her from that point onwards, and the talking to cats part was just the icing on the cake.

That was one of the most impressive games I've seen in a long time - not just Margaret's performance, which was jaw-dropping at times (and didn't she run a couple of categories? I was surprised not to hear applause), but that Carter managed to pull back to a point that gave him a chance in Final.

Jeopardy needs more librarian contestants. Imagine this new champ vs. Lampy.
What was the combined Coryat in this game, $50k? I think the $36,800 I had from the fourth tonight was in my personal top 5. For FJ I thought of Michigan first, then remembered the Great Lakes are connected, and got to Idaho in about five seconds. That would've been a perfect Final for Teen Tournament.
Hoping for a third lap

The Archive will eventually confirm or correct my math, but I've got it at $51,000: Margaret $27,200; Carter $18,400; Hannah $5,400.
