Congrats to Chris on becoming a semi-finalist. I had 46 correct responses including these triple stumpers: Gucci, radon, grapes, dark matter, diacritical marks, Stay with Me, Great Lakes Region, Serengeti, and Khartoum. I also got FJ.

I would've bet more. That's all I'll say because I've given up trying to figure out WC cutoffs.

For some reason my mind jumped to "Panopticon" immediately, but I got to Panorama easily enough. I might have wagered less in Chris's situation, but I'm not great on wildcard theory.

I thought Great Lakes was an odd stumper, but who knows...

The Hogwarts response is a good example of why you should use the Alex Jacob DD method of reading the question a bunch of times and making sure you have the right answer before answering. I'm sure she knew Azkaban and just was feeling jumpy under the lights.

Yeah. I'd bet she was thinking "detention ... school ... Hogwarts".

I did the same thing! Knowing Latin and Greek prefixes definitely helps on "word origins" Finals, so I was shocked the spelling bee coach didn't get it.
I'll be eligible for the Teachers' Tournament next year, provided I get a second swim in the pool. I think my $29,600 was virtually identical to the combined Coryat, although I probably would've bet it all (and lost it all) on that first DD. WLT "plutonium" there?
Hoping for a third lap

Pluto was the god of the underworld, aka Hades.

I didn't get it, but Pluto is the go doc the underworld and the clue mentioned the gates of Hell.

Word origins is not my favorite category, but they have had a number of FJs about the Greek word pan, so I got this one. I was also surprised the woman who mentioned the importance of knowing Greek prefixes missed it, but I think she had a case of the nerves up there. I did like her Carol Burnett tribute in her intro.

Congrats to Chris on the win, good luck to Lauren on the wild card v

I also thought of "panopticon", but luckily rejected it in favor of "panorama".

Even though one can see "optic" in "panopticon", I wasn't 100% sure what "panopticon" meant, and I thought: "panorama" is a much more common word, and seems to fit the description given in the clue, even though I had no idea about the etymology of the "orama" part.

For some bizarre reason, my DVR totally failed to record Jeopardy! today. And there was no pre-emption, either. Help is always appreciated.

Would have went all in and missed it too. I even paused for a few seconds. Plutonium never even occurred to me, maybe because it's named after the planet, maybe because they had just had a question on transuranics and I was expecting something higher up.

Nice to see Dianne saying hi to Carole Burnett's grandmother at the opening there ...

I'd give it to you but solely for the reason that that was my answer and I credited myself.

All I could think of to associate with hell was sulfur...Plutonium means Pluto's Gate? There's a suffix meaning I never knew...
