Starlight Express wasn't an entirely random sheep. Let me preface this by saying that 85 percent of what I know about Andrew Lloyd Webber comes from comedian Paul F. Tompkins' (broadly inaccurate) characterization of the composer.

I know from PFT's ALW character that Starlight Express is about a train depicted on-stage by actors on roller skates. I've never seen the musical or listened to its soundtrack, but that synopsis is enough to connect it to a song titled "Rolling Stock."

Re: TD: 298: The 70th Tony Awards (Closing Monday)
Our public library belongs to an e-media consortium called Hoopla, and one of the the available titles is the original Broadway cast of Hamilton. I downloaded it for my walks around the neighborhood. This 64-year-old white guy was impressed--perhaps because he's a history buff and found the rap style especially suitable for telling the story of Alexander Hamilton and the early American Republic. Two thumbs up.ElendilPickle wrote:I strongly dislike the vast majority of musicals, and I'm not particularly into hip-hop, but I love Hamilton. The combination of musical styles, outstanding performances, and, I think, the fact that it's about historical people and events means I actually bought the cast album and listen to it regularly.ihavejeoprosy wrote:Can someone explain what makes Hamilton so great? Why the hype?

Re: TD: 298: The 70th Tony Awards (Question 4 results posted)
From the list of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, I've seen productions of all but three on Tigershark's list: Starlight Express (which ran on Broadway about a year) and Love Never Dies and Whistle Down the Wind, both never playing in New York. I can add a real obscurity of ALW: By Jeeves, based on stories of P.G. Wodehouse. It's a revision of an earlier show simply called "Jeeves" which flopped on the West End. Also haven't seen School of Rock and not likely to (not interested in rock music). Saw the original Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar and didn't care for it, but later loved Evita and Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Liked but don't love Cats, Phantom, Sunset, Woman in White.
For me the most exciting thing about the current Broadway season was two Bock & Harnick revivals: Fiddler on the Roof and She Loves Me. Oh, for a full scale revival of The Rothschilds! There was a recent small scale revisal in NYC, called Rothschild & Sons; nice, but not good enough!
BTW...to Broadway fans, referring to a recording of a stage show as a "Soundtrack" makes us cringe every time we see/hear it. "Soundtrack" refers to a recording of a film score. There is no "soundtrack" recording of Hamilton yet...when there is a film made, then there will be. The preferred term is "Cast Album", or "OBC" (Original Broadway Cast...guess what "OLC" would be?)

Re: TD: 298: The 70th Tony Awards (Question 4 results posted)
Thanks for posting this. I know the difference, but it prompted me to look up exactly what I have for my three favorite musicals. There's no soundtrack of 1776, but I have the Original Broadway Cast and New Broadway Cast recordings. And I have both the soundtrack and original cast recordings of The Music Man and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Then, a couple hours after I did that, I realized that...SavoyGirl wrote:BTW...to Broadway fans, referring to a recording of a stage show as a "Soundtrack" makes us cringe every time we see/hear it. SPOILER FOR JUNE 8 JEOPARDY FOLLOWS:
Spoiler
... there was probably a recording of Neil Patrick Harris as Hedwig, and sure enough, I found the audio on YouTube (and video of him doing Sugar Daddy on the Tonys). I also found a couple videos of Andrew Rannells in the role.
BTW, thanks for this TD, Tigershark. I was stumped on way too many of the questions to enter (though I don't know how I missed Starlight Express, since I'm also quite familiar with PFT's ALW), but I've been enjoying reading the reveal and (hopefully) maybe learning a few things.

From the comments on this thread, it sounds like a lot of us could benefit from the advice in this video. For those addicted to Hamilton, and for those annoyed by those who are addicted to Hamilton.

Sure, but I will not be involved in that because CBS CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO AIR THE TONYS LIVE ON THE WEST COAST EVEN THOUGH THE EMMYS, OSCARS, AND GRAMMYS AIR LIVE HERE!Carpe Diem wrote: Hey, Tigershark--can folks threadjack this TD tomorrow night if they want to post during the show?
I've been known to break out into songs from Hamilton from time to time. While at trivia, the questions was put these events in chronological order: 1. Lewis and Clark leave on their expedition, 2. Thomas Jefferson is inaugurated for a second term and 3. The U.S. Capital is moved to Washington DC. I said "I know that the capital moving to DC came first because No one else was in the room where it happened, the room where it happened, the room where it happened...." Not the first time I've broken into song during trivia. Once there was a question "Which composer won an Oscar for The Little Mermaid?" and I sang "Part of Your World" in the entirety. Yeah my trivia team thinks I'm weird, but they put up with me because I know a lot of stuff.

Seriously kicking myself for not going w/Esther Williams and Amelie for the past 2 questions-figured they would get selected with this crowd!
Oh well.

If you ever get the chance to see Hedwig live, do it! Much better than the movie IMHO.dinghammer wrote:SavoyGirl wrote: I've only seen Hedwig (the movie) once, but I've probably listened to the soundtrack more times than I've seen The Music Man, and I've been watching that throughout my life. And I've never seen adults perform any of those three musicals live. I'll definitely give Hamilton a shot if there's a movie or if a recording of the Broadway show gets released.

There are 11 commandments on Sunday for the West Coast. The first 10 are Bible-related and the 11th is "Thou shalt show 60 Minutes at 7:00.Tigershark wrote:...CBS CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO AIR THE TONYS LIVE ON THE WEST COAST EVEN THOUGH THE EMMYS, OSCARS, AND GRAMMYS AIR LIVE HERE!

Hey, someone messed up the quoting excerpts! I never posted the above about Hedwig..have never seen movie or stage, and have no intentions of.CoachP wrote:If you ever get the chance to see Hedwig live, do it! He's on the west coast. No NFL game will run THAT long since the latest start is 4:30 PM Eastern/1:30 Pacific. Unless a game runs 5 1/2 hours it's not going to happen.Tigershark wrote:Except when NFL games run late...MarkBarrett wrote:There are 11 commandments on Sunday for the West Coast.
