Thursday, June 2, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Game Recap for Show #7314, 2016-06-02
CONTESTANTS
Ed Brown, a lighting designer from Pasadena, California
Ariel Watkins, a graduate student from Monterey, California
Kelly Bayles, a librarian from Tulsa, Oklahoma (whose 1-day cash winnings total $16,900)
OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thanks, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome. I hope you caught it on yesterday's program. There was a beautiful moment at the end of Double Jeopardy! when Kelly looked up at the scoreboard and saw that she had twice as much money as either of her opponents, which meant the game is a runaway. She cannot be caught. She's going to win. You can't imagine how good that makes you feel going into Final Jeopardy! It doesn't happen all the time. We'll see what happens today as she faces Ariel and Ed. Good luck, players. Here comes the Jeopardy! Round. And here come the categories. First off...

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Ed Brown is a lighting designer from Pasadena, California, who once had a strange thing happen during a production of The Nutcracker. Did it have to do with lighting?
Ed: Well, not really, but we had a--it was a low budget production. We used, for the snow effect, instant mashed potato flakes and colanders with fans underneath them. Twice during the pre-show check, I turned it on while the stage hands were mopping and made drifts of mashed potatoes across the stage.
[Laughter]
Alex: So good snow, good snow.
Ed: It was very sticky, yes.
Alex: Yes.
Alex: Ariel Watkins is a graduate student from Monterey, California, who lived in Tanzania for a couple of years. What were you doing there?
Ariel: I was teaching English at a high school. I was out in the boonies. They didn't have enough qualified English teachers. So I was living with no electricity, no running water, um, teaching high school students proper grammar.
Alex: Good for you.
Alex: Kelly Bayles is our champion. She's a librarian. And she has two different colored eyes. How does this happen?
Kelly: Um, it's just a genetic thing. I've heard it's kind of like having a birthmark on your eye.
Alex: So when you have to deal with people who say, "I prefer being with brown-eyed people," and other folks who say, "I prefer being with blue-eyed people," you fit in.
Kelly: Yeah, you're like, "Have I got news for you!"
Alex: Yeah.
[Laughter]

Was stuck on FJ until I re-read the category. Good clue, more multi-faceted than some of what we've seen lately.

The writers tried, they really did, but I really think it's impossible to dumb down the Canadian geography categories any more than they have been as of today. Time to just stop.

I was surprised FJ! was a triple miss.
What is the difference between sociology and cultural anthropology, anyway? I thought that one might get overturned.

Congrats to Kelly on her second win. I had 50 correct responses including these triple stumpers: Florida, Trulia, autoclave, VMI, William Styron, band, cultural anthropology, "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head", and Saskatchewan. I also got FJ.

I mean...if you spot them Edmonton and still get a neg, if you give them Regina and it's still a stand-and-stare TS, what else can they do? I was sitting there shaking my head, thinking "the Canadians out there must be laughing at us".grindcore wrote:The writers tried, they really did, but I really think it's impossible to dumb down the Canadian geography categories any more than they have been as of today. Re: Thursday, June 2, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
I got FJ at the 32nd second. Sigh.
I liked Ed. I wish we could see him again. Had he bet enough on that last DD, he could have won this game on a miss.
Way to go, Kelly! Wow. This is the second game where she put herself out of reach on the final clue.
Precalled the reversal on "short course." I wonder if Alex was accurate in saying the judges had decided that response was "just as good" as "crash course." I didn't think it was just as good. But I thought it was possibly good enough. I'm cool with the reversal but would have been fine if they'd let the original ruling stand.

The value of precalling:
During the commercial break, I thought "What famous people would be most likely to be described as 20th century notables?" Gandhi was the very first name to pop into my head.
The category title didn't say "world leaders" or "entertainers", for example. I think Martin Luther King would have been another good precall based on the category title. As well as, I don't know, somebody like Benjamin Spock.
Despite my lucky precall, I didn't get it right away. It took a few moments for everything to click. At first I thought the year might be relevant, and we might be looking for somebody who died shortly before 2009. I also think two of the contestants read a little too much into the word "controversial" in the clue -- it's not that the person was controversial because of being considered a bad guy, it's that *selling* his personal effects was controversial.
I figured they must be showing us those physical objects for a reason. The combination of the sandals and the eyeglasses gave it to me.
On another day, it wouldn't have clicked, or would have taken me more than 30 seconds. But I thought it was a neat FJ, and I definitely liked it more than (very mild spoiler) the clues for the previous two days.

Abso-frickin-lutely. This was a completely fair, above board FJ. I'd say it was one of the better ones. I have no complaints except for the part where I didn't get it in time.skullturf wrote:On another day, it wouldn't have clicked, or would have taken me more than 30 seconds. Sigh, Ed. You really aren't allowed to look disappointed at the scores after that bet.
I knew it wasn't right, but the glasses stood out the most for me; however, I (embarrassingly*) mistook them for Lennon's.
(*Embarrassing because my son's name is Lennon and I know enough about John that I should know his glasses look different)

This is where I ended up as well. I was stuck on executed criminals and never got unstuck. Of course, were it a criminal, the category would've likely read "Notorious" rather than "Notable."skullturf wrote:I also think two of the contestants read a little too much into the word "controversial" in the clue -- it's not that the person was controversial because of being considered a bad guy, it's that *selling* his personal effects was controversial.
It appears from googling the subject that they're very similar, but the clue asked for a type of anthropology. I'm pretty sure that sociology is not considered a sub-discipline of anthropology.Vowela wrote:What is the difference between sociology and cultural anthropology, anyway? I thought that one might get overturned.
Sprinkles are for winners.

WLT Game of Thrones or Poe in the top boxes?
NHO Edwin Starr, much less "War". "Escape" was my only get in the category, though I have heard of "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" and "Dancing Queen" (and what a snooze that song is).
Strangely, I didn't recognize ANY of the sites in the Interwebs category except Reddit. The hell is Vine?
No guess on FJ! I somehow read 2009 as 1909 and was stumped. Nothing in the picture meant anything to me, and even if I had read the date right I wouldn't have gotten to Gandhi. For some reason, "Gandhi" by itself always makes me think of Indira first, or at least long enough to distract me from the fact that Mahatma and Mohandas are the same person.

Got $1200 back after "short" was accepted. "Crash" was a more appropriate word, but not the only appropriate word.
I completely struck out on the four big clues, losing a coin flip on the author DD and saying "Ontario" for the Canada DD. I'm surprised someone got Nova Scotia but not Saskatchewan.
I must have trouble with visual FJ's, because I thought that bowl looked like a hat. 2009 auction? Who died in 2009 and was controversial? Oh yeah, the King of Pop. (headdesk)

Hoping for a third lap

To be fair, I thought the Nova Scotia clue was pretty tough.grindcore wrote:The writers tried, they really did, but I really think it's impossible to dumb down the Canadian geography categories any more than they have been as of today. Time to just stop.

It was in the correct position on the board. I am Canadian, and I didn't know the correct response until they mentioned the 1917 explosion, which probably isn't as famous outside of Canada. Appropriate for the bottom row, but probably no other rows.eureka wrote:To be fair, I thought the Nova Scotia clue was pretty tough.grindcore wrote:The writers tried, they really did, but I really think it's impossible to dumb down the Canadian geography categories any more than they have been as of today.
