Alex: Justin Lucas wanted to get ready for his appearance on Jeopardy! and so he practiced doing what?

Justin: I practiced on a treadmill or an elliptical every day. Uh, we actually cord-cut, and we don't have any TV in our house, so, uh, we had to go down to the gym, get on a treadmill, throw something on TV. And for 30 minutes, I'd run with you. So if you'd like to go running sometime, I've got some practice.

Alex: [Clicks tongue] I'm a walker.

Justin: Ah, okay.




Alex: Liz Hedreen from Kirkland, Washington. A stay-at-home mom. And you and your husband have done something that makes me feel envious. You have both climbed...

Liz: Mount St. Helens. And--

Alex: Is it not dangerous?

Liz: Well, it was about 10 years after it blew up. Um, and it is still an active volcano, although not terribly active. But we climbed up, and it's a super-difficult hike. And at times, I wanted to lie down and cry. But we made it to the top and it was--

Alex: What's the view like from the top?

Liz: It's fabulous. You can look down into the crater, and you can see the lava dome, which is the mountain rebuilding itself. And it's fascinating.

Alex: Okay. Well, good for you.

Liz: Thank you.

Alex: Brave lady.




Alex: Zach Klitzman is brave also because he did something that a lot of people would like to do--or at least they would like to think they want to do it. And that has to do with Pamplona in Spain.

Zach: Exactly, Alex, yeah. In college, I studied abroad in, um, Spain, and we went, a couple of classmates and I, to Pamplona for the Running of the Bulls, their annual festival. And I was one of the runners. Um, chose one of the safer areas, kind of like a straightaway. So I was running along the side. And someone actually, five feet behind me, actually got hit by a bull.

Alex: Whoa. I'm not gonna run with the bulls.

Zach: Very fair.

Alex: Because as I mentioned a few moments ago, I'm a walker.

Lots of fun today. Shame to see Justin get so close. Loved his relaxed attitude and his comment of "Awesome!" regarding the hamster-powered nanomachine. His FJ guess of Space Mountain wasn't bad. I'm old enough to remember that Space Mountain came later. For both me and Mrs Penguin our problem was that we had way too much information to process. We're both native Southern Californians and have been to Disneyland MANY times over the years. She ended up on the America the Beautiful exhibit. I went with the monorail.

Congrats to Liz for sticking with it against two good opponents and getting FJ right for the win. She looked like she was having trouble believing she won. Good-bye to Zach. He was a lot of fun too.

I thought it was a good set of clues overall today.

As my wife noted to me, Justin wasn't quite correct on the power source for the USS Jimmy Carter.

Speaking of Mrs Penguin, when the CATHERINE THE GREAT category showed up, we both shouted out "The horse!" The first clue in that category referenced C the G's lover. Alas, our precall turned out to be incorrect.

Still on the subject of Mrs P, she requests a ruling on the following clue in the "IT-" category: HYPHENATED ADJECTIVE MEANING EXTREMELY SMALL, LIKE SOME SPIDERS & BIKINIS. She said "What is itty-bitty?" The contestant gave "What is itsy-bitsy" which is of course what they wanted. I've spoilered my vote so as not to unduly influence your deliberations.

I said she'd be negged initially but credited on a reversal. The clue doesn't REQUIRE this to be the same adjective as the one in the songs about the spider and the other one about the bikini. (I phrase it that way to avoid implying there's a song that combines both elements. Shudder.) Those TOMs are there to make the obvious answer easy to get to. They don't rule out a different adjective as long as it's hyphenated, means "extremely small," and starts with "it" per the category.

While you're at it, give me a ruling on this RHYME TIME clue: ONE WHO INSTRUCTS A SPREADER OF THE GOSPEL. Alex accepted "What is a preacher teacher?" which I'm sure is what they wanted. I didn't think of that and went with "What is a proselytizer adviser?"

I missed the following RHYME TIME clue: ONE WHO CHOOSES THE ALCOHOL. Like Zach, I said "What is a boozer chooser?" As Mrs P pointed out, that's not someone who chooses the alcohol, that's someone who chooses the alcoholic. Or it's the alcohol-drinker who chooses something. And that something is presumably alcohol. What do you guys think? I'm ok with Zach's (and my) response being negged. But I think I'd be ok if they'd accepted it too. It's interesting that they used "chooses" right there in the clue. I wonder if they did that to steer us away from a response with "chooser" in it. Steered ME right toward it!

It was interesting to see the following clue play out: EVEN WITHOUT A "RE", THIS VERB MEANS TO SAY SOMETHING AGAIN & AGAIN & AGAIN &... Zach said "what is reiterate?" and was correctly ruled incorrect. Back in November we discussed a similar clue: WITH OR WITHOUT A PREFATORY "ONE", IT'S THE ART OF GAINING AN ADVANTAGE. In that case, though, the "with or without" made either response permissible:

Liquor picker was an easy miss at $200. I just couldn't get past "booze" myself.

Failing to BMS to blue whale ("wait, isn't there just one kind of whale?") and outright not knowing "pup" (way too generic a word to pin to armadillo) left me at 3/5.

Strangely, Itasca was my only get in the IT category.

No guess on FJ! I honestly didn't know that the attraction was actually called that.

FJ wasn't an instaget - I originally thought of the GE Carousel of Progress, which is also a refugee from the 1964 World's Fair, but realized that had been dismantled long ago, and thus was pretty obscure. Then I remembered Small World was also at the Fair, and went with that.

My getting Disneyland and Disney World mixed up bit me in the ass again. I spent at least 20 seconds convinced of my EPCOT answer. I realized in a panic that EPCOT is at Disney World not Disneyland and hastily scribbled in "What is Cinderella's Castle?" (in about as clear handwriting as Zach's) to think of a Disneyland attraction, pretty much knowing full well that a) the Castle was there at the parks' opening, and b) it's actually Sleeping Beauty's Castle (which I actually realized at second 31, but I knew it was wrong anyways.)

BTW, for those of you who want a handy trick of keeping the American Disney theme parks straight, what I often use (and should have earlier today) is this:

Disney World is in Orlando.
Disneyland is in LA. (Well, in the LA metropolitan area).

They were measuring banking in percentage instead of degrees; and the window netting is for keeping a drivers HEAD inside the car, it's not about arms. Someone was killed when their head hit a concrete wall on a side impact long before the Petty incident. Of course the netting may have only become mandatory after that time; NASCAR never has been proactive about safety.

I've only ever been to Disney in Orlando, but got It's A Small World instantly. If I recall correctly, from the one occasion I let myself be dragged onto the ride, there is some UNICEF signage or information in the queuing area.

Was Justin playing while sitting in a chair?

Justin was clearly standing up when Alex came out at the beginning. Usually if someone is sitting the tips at the back of the chair are visible at some point. There was a lady who was sitting in April or May (or March if time is really flying by). No mention was made during the game, so I did not bring it up here.

No matter how favorable the FJ! round category I should use the break to brainstorm possible responses. It's fair game to do on the show, so I often do it at home as well since I watch without a fast-forward button in use.

Tonight my reaction was, "I'll get it. I can't lose 7-streak on that one." I used the break to fill in the shell I prepare ahead of time for "theFJguy" post.

When I saw the clue I did not know it. I thought about attractions already mentioned here in Tomorrowland (plus Adeventure Thru Inner Space). I considered Abe Lincoln. Everything that came to me had specific names or sponsors that J! would never ask for without giving the contestants a helping hand.

On a second reading of the clue I wised up and translated UNICEF to Children's to realize what I needed to write to be correct. Even though I got it right and in under 10 seconds it almost feels like a partial fail since it took "so long" to solve it.

Liz won and the gentlemen have DD responses and/or wagers to revisit for missing out on a chance to win. Zach at least has 37K+ to get over his troubles while Justin went out in his one shot on the type of FJ! clue I categorize as the type family, friends, and co-workers will have solved or widely claimed to have solved.

Probably the best game I've seen in a long time.

Fine play by all three contestants. Loved Zach's hunt for the Daily Doubles and accurate betting. Unfortunately, he was upended by a few costly misses. Jason was very knowledgeable and fast on the buzzer. Liz was a solid player who got the win from the crushed position.
