Question 3 (Civilization: Music 1)

Post by barandall800 »

3. Civilization: Music 1 (MUSIC 201)
Name the location (state if in the United States, and country if outside the United States) of one of the following hospitals/clinics.

I considered doing an art question here, having you identify paintings or something along those lines, but I thought it might take a little too much time to put together (at least more than I had to finalize these questions). I included a few hospitals on here for personal reasons. HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn is where my dad works. Providence Sacred Heart is where one of my sisters was born. And Intermountain Primary Children's is, well, here in Utah. (Another hospital I considered including was the one I was born in, Alta View Hospital in Sandy, Utah, which had a crazy hostage incident just 2 1/2 months before I was born there.) I didn't realize until posting these results just how popular Tennessee was as an answer. If we're being honest, I probably couldn't have recalled that's where St. Jude's was.

(Note: This was a tough ruling. My policy for this question, since I just asked for just the state or country, was to accept the correct city or the correct city/state instead of just the state. Since Baltimore was the wrong city, I decided to rule this incorrect. I am open to revisiting this ruling if need be.)

I had to use the drop on the first question-popular music is my weakest category (I missed a question in an earlier TD when I thought Maroon 5 had been around since the 90s).

Question 4 (Concert Choir)

Post by barandall800 »

4. Concert Choir (MUSIC 314R)
Answer one of the following pieces of Dolly-related trivia.

This past year in Concert Choir was amazing. Probably the high point was getting to sing with the world-renowned King's Singers when they visited BYU back in February. I wasn't sure where to go with this question until I thought of Dolly Parton. She's had a long and colorful career and it wasn't too hard to find interesting, yet fairly gettable pieces of trivia. Yet another sheep I probably wouldn't have known the answer to before I put together this game. And poor Linda Ronstadt...not that Emmylou Harris isn't fantastic, though.

In case you're interested, here's the arrangement of "Light of a Clear Blue Morning" that we sang, performed by a choir conducted by the man who arranged it:

Question 5 (Pioneers & Persecution 1846-99)

Post by barandall800 »

5. Pioneers & Persecution 1846-99 (REL C 342)
Name a U.S. state granted admission to the Union after Utah in 1896, one of these states’ capitals, or the U.S. President who admitted Utah into the Union.

A whole lot of you were feeling Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, but none of you were feeling New Mexico itself. (#tdproblems?) The 3 of you who gave Arizona-related responses receive an automatic 50-point deduction...ummm, never mind. Carry on. :P

For the second question in a row, no DROPS or AUDITS were used.

For those who continue to insist on finding the ultimate logic behind TD, give your brain cells the night off.

I didnt feel much different about my answer sets for TD 303 and this one. Results:

1st place tie in 303.
43rd out of 46 in 304 so far.

Just go with the flow and have fun..... and learn some new stuff along the way too.

Question 6 (Intro to Spanish Literature)

Post by barandall800 »

6. Intro to Spanish Literature (SPAN 339)
Name a Latin American nominated for an Academy Award in one of the following categories: Best Actor (lead & supporting), Best Actress (lead & supporting), and Best Director.

As I mentioned in the question description, we watched a good number of films in this class in addition to the literature we studied. I really liked "Il postino" and "Under the Same Moon," and one of the more obscure films we watched, "Muerte de un ciclista" ("Death of a Cyclist"), was great as well. Film questions are typically a bit rocky, and that was the case here, but it turned out better than I thought it would. I can't say the sheeps are too surprising. A lot of nice gets by quite a few of you, leaving us with only 5 unused responses. Two of them, while recent, were probably pretty tough -- Berenice Bejo and Lupita Nyong'o -- likely because they are both primarily known by their other nationalities (French & Kenyan respectively), or those of you who might have known about their Latin American heritage weren't sure they fit the rules. As a side note, I just watched the movie featuring one of the singletons here (Rita Moreno), "West Side Story," for the first time this weekend (I know, I'm surprised I hadn't seen it too). Both she and the movie as a whole were fantastic.

Question 6 Bonus

Post by barandall800 »

EXTRA CREDIT (-2 points): Name the only Uruguayan to win an Academy Award, for Best Original Song in 2004 for “Al otro lado del rio.”

I really thought this would be gettable for at least a few of you, but alas, it went the way of my Natasha Trethewey bonus from my game last year -- actually, worse, on second thought. No one gave the correct answer for this extra credit question, which was Jorge Drexler. I found out about "Al otro lado del rio" years ago (but some time after he won the Oscar), and today I'm a huge fan of his music.

Here's his memorable acceptance speech at the 2004 Oscars, which consisted of him singing a few bars of his winning song (Antonio Banderas had performed it earlier, since producers didn't think Jorge was well-known enough) and some brief thanks in English and Spanish.

And here's a great music video of one of my favorites of his, "Todo se transforma":

Well, on with the game...
