July 19, 2016 - L"UKE" for $2,000: Thailand island called the "Pearl of the South"

Sept 12, 2016 - ASIAN ISLANDS (FJ): Phuket, the largest island of this country, has regained its tourism industry after a natural disaster in 2004

2 months air time and 2 weeks (9 days!) game time is too close together to have these 2 clues, especially when the first one gives away the correct response to an upcoming Final Jeopardy. It's not impossible (nor even improbable, given Pranjal's run began with that first game) that the same player could have played both of these clues. I understand that it's probably 4 or 5 months tape time, and they probably knew it wouldn't be a dupe for a player, but still.

I wonder if that game had aired before this one taped? That brings up a whole different set of Qs.

(Credit the Fikkle Fame comments section with the catch.)

It felt like ther ewas more magenta in the set. Very little cosmetic change otherwise.

+1 to the Johnny shot. Always love when they do that.

What the hell is that pop-in noise?

====

WLT Department of State in the top box?

"Highlands -> Scottish -> durrrr, what kinda alcohol could possibly be Scottish? I dunno." Guess my brain's still on vacation.

Ran "Best".

Got the first three Queens, but didn't know Victoria and NHO Juliana outside that Michael Rosen poem that calls her a fat banana. And then we also had a clue with "plums" in it, and a category on British poets...

0/5 in College and Intoxicating, no surprise.

Lightsaber for blaster, death star for space station, no clue on "Wookie", spaced on Stormtrooper.

Lach Trash: flood, toilet, kinescope, kanji. Forgot the category at $400 and said megahertz instead of kilohertz. Hate it when top box is my only miss.

Had neither half of Finnegans Wake Forest, ending up 4/5 in Before & After.

Oxidation was overvalued at $2,000.

I spent the entire time giggling at "Phuket" and couldn't come up with a response. Didn't realize Thailand was an island, or that anything happened to it in '04.

Luckily I recently ate at a Thai restaurant called Phuket. Never would have gotten it otherwise.

State Dept.- It mentioned a date in the 1700s and I think it also said foreign affairs. Kind of narrowed it down.

I was worried they wouldn't finish college football.

I do not like the new category reveal sounds, but I suppose I will get used to them.

The Star Wars category was an easy sweep for me. More of those!

Phuket reminded me of Thailand, but 2004 disaster made me go to Indonesia

Babel and Babylon are the same place!

The leading city in Mesopotamia was called Babel in Hebrew and Babylon in Greek. The distinction only exists in English translation.

If it had made a difference, Annie would have a legitimate gripe.

Finally back to J! Easy boards, but lots of strange TSes. OK, I'll forgive you for kinescope and kanji, and maybe I can be generous with the Colon category...but Johnstown flood? Hm.

Everytime they troll the contestants with "SEC Tigers" I grab the popcorn.

Instaget FJ just from Phuket, without even needing to remember the tsunami.

So will I, but it's going to take a while. Definitely not a fan.

It's not. Clue never said it was an island, just that it had an island.

Thailand is not an island, Phuket is an island in Thailand.

I was 99% sure Phuket was in Thailand, but did second guess with Indonesia until I realized Phuket could not be the largest island in Indonesia.

Alex totally was pointing at me when he said the contestant test was open to Canadians. Sorry everyone else.

Good game! I thought the old champ would continue longer, but double J wasn't kind to her. Congrats to our new champ - long may you reign.

Had a great vacation on Koh Samui (Thai island on the other side of the Malay peninsula) in 2003, but knew Phuket too. It was hit hard by the tsunami - but perhaps we heard more about it because there were western tourists, unlike Banda Aceh in Indonesia.

Thailand is not an island, Phuket is an island in Thailand.
So my clue parsing skills are only getting worse with each season too.

I swear for a while I thought they were making a fart joke ("I love the smell of your colon") and deliberately changed it to Colón for the joke (and to make the category about the Latin American word), it took way more time than it needed (or perhaps it was my giggling at a fart joke only I saw for a long while) to register colón = cologne.

I need to hand in my geek card immediately, only getting 3 of the Star Wars clues. (And negging - not even clamming, *negging*! - on $800 and $1600)
TenPoundHammer wrote:What the hell is that pop-in noise?
And just when I grew to love the old one! (I bet you said that last time they changed it too).

Amazing how they keep a lot of the obvious 1980s aesthetic of the game (the font for the title, the Daily Double sound), and have only "updated" the "filling in the board" sound.

I actually liked the previous one from the get-go. Probably because it came right after a whole season where there was no sound at all.

Actually, the Daily Double sound was different for the first couple weeks. It sounded kind of like a baby version of the THX deep note early on.

I thought this was an awfully easy board. I totally would've made a Wookiee roar after getting that $1200 clue, but that would've Chewied the new scenery! (groan)
I work near Marlboro, NJ so the guy in the middle was easy to root for. The SW category helped get him back in the game.
Instaget FJ! Not enough "Phuket" jokes on #Jeopardy twitter.

44R, 5W (1/3 on DDs); Coryat: 33k

Picked up some trash on: Dept of Labor, Auburn, Panama, October, Budweiser, Dylan Thomas, and Finnegan's Wake Forest

Final was an instaget. I remember the tsunami and the name "Phuket" wasn't leaving my mind.

Good game to start the season off.
