CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Welcome back. In this day and age of Internet communication, Rachel Lin is on a quest. She wants to save--
Rachel: The U.S. postal service, by writing more letters.
[Laughter]
Alex: You think that's gonna do it?
Rachel: I think so.
Alex: Are there other people who are involved with you in this quest?
Rachel: It's basically a one-woman show, but I started a Facebook page and I have over 4,000 fans now.
Alex: Well, that's a good start. Keep it going.
Alex: Bryan Hlavinka from Houston, Texas. A tequila tour manager.
Bryan: That's right.
Alex: What's a tequila tour manager do?
Bryan: Well, basically I get paid to party. It's awesome. I travel around the country for anywhere from six to eleven months a year. We go into bars, buy people shots of tequila, get them to try it out, see what they think about the cocktails we make.
Alex: I was surprised recently on the most expensive brands, we're talking about a lot of money for a shot.
Bryan: Absolutely. Especially any kind of Extra Añejo.
Alex: Oh. Okay. So I'll watch out for that.
Alex: Seth Wilson is a Ph.D. candidate, and he is a member of a group that I've never heard of. And you're concentrating on gentlemanliness in the twenty-first century? What does that mean?
Seth: One of my friends, who is an attorney in Boston, decided to start a group to circulate readings about a variety of pop culture and classical categories--about the idea of what it means to be a gentleman, now the idea--the original idea of being a gentleman has changed so much in the twenty-first century.
Alex: Didn't a famous Broadway personality punch you in the stomach?
Seth: He did. So I must not be too much of a gentleman.
[Laughter]
Alex: Well, we won't go into that. But you're still in command of the board, Seth, so check out the categories and make a selection as we continue.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Seth found the Daily Double on the 21st clue. Seth had $3,400, Bryan had $6,000, and Rachel was at $800. Seth made it a True Daily Double, wagering $3,400.
NATIVE AMERICANS $800: Of Cherokee descent, Robert Owen was one of the first 2 senators from this state in 1907
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
A WHITMAN SAMPLER $800: "I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer" this
WORDS THAT SHOULD RHYME $600: To give support to an effort & a group of people attending to a V.I.P.
OUT OF THE CRADLE $1000: Some say ignore the noises; Baby can get back to sleep without help, an ability known by this alliterative term
A WHITMAN SAMPLER $1000: "I ____ myself, and sing myself"
NATIVE AMERICANS $400: Mescalero & Chiricahua are spoken by members of this Native American people
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

Interesting that the middle contestant with the long beard got Z Z Top. I had trouble understanding him a couple of times and needed to back up to hear Grateful Dead.
It was too bad the female contestant bungled her way onto the hole. The tiny amount she might have had wouldn't have mattered anyway.
I said Hello Kitty.

Lach Trash: Grass, Etruscans, Nazca lines.
When was the last "darn Etruscans" reference?
Should Rhyme was tough. I didn't get any of those four at all.
I had "self-" but not "soothing". Ironically I find the word "soothing" incredibly grating, much like how some people hate the word "moist".
How the HELL did I know "Parseltongue"?!
"Meandering" was a very Sheldon Cooper clue.
WLT Kareem at $400?
That was a strange ruling on Elven/Elvish. Interesting that even with Rachel not being penalized, she still ended up in the red.
Insta-miss with Hello Kitty.

Re: Tuesday, September 20, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Of the most interesting introductions of Jeopardy's 2010+ era, this is the first I heard of a specifc potable-related job. A "tequilla" tour manager. The second was the "burrito" architect from 2012. It would have been nice to see the food-related specialist win.
With Seth acting like how he performed like this, he just turned into a Philip Tiu/Michael Bilow hybrid. If that happens, we're looking at a possible first S33 tournament contestant for the tournament, or pretty much a bull at a china shop. I'm wondering if this will be interesting to see how he performs.

48R good game for goats; puzzled over this FJ thinking about silly comic characters and Pokemon toons but did the math to redirect: 2015 - 60 > 1955, Ahhah! Dare ka Gojira desu ka!? LOL
LT: Spear of summer grass; I celebrate myself; Apaches speak Mescalero-Chiricuahua languages; omnipotent; "Darn" Etruscans; Nazca lines.
Always a sad day when a contestant doesn't qualify for FJ. And again our champ lays out the whole farm on FJ, twice he hath defied the Game Gods of Chance...
PS: Re: Above; I seriously doubt he will win 5 games given propensity to wager all on one throw.

But you know...Dan Feitel risked all but one dollar on 4 of his 5 wins. So...it can be a precarious scenario we're looking into. Even though...on his last game, lost by betting all but one dollar.

I wouldn't say she bungled her way into the hole. She was way behind and bet big on a DD, which she missed. John the Baptist losing his head is fairly well known, but maybe she didn't catch the hint. She then was forced to go big on the next DD and missed it as well. That wasn't bungling, she just missed the DDs but made proper wagers.floridagator wrote:Interesting that the middle contestant with the long beard got Z Z Top. The edit on Elvin/Elvish was strange.
The champ did go all in on FJ, but with his narrow lead, he would have had to bet $14,301 anyway. In a two-player FJ, he might as well bet it all as he is doomed to second place if he gets it wrong no matter what.
I was hoping Bryan would get Kareem to give us a tie going into FJ.
I had no idea on FJ. I put Kilroy (as in Kilroy was here) just to have something.

Seth certainly likes to throw caution to the wind in FJ.
It took me a minute to understand Bryan's thought process for his FInal Wager. He could have bet either $801 or $13199, but I think he wagered the amount he intended to leave himself with if he got the question wrong.

I thought his pronunciation of 'Rouge' with the same ending "G" sound as Gouge was questionable.floridagator wrote:Interesting that the middle contestant with the long beard got Z Z Top. I had trouble understanding him a couple of times and needed to back up to hear Grateful Dead.

He bet one more dollar than double his deficit. So if the leader bet $800 (unlikely, but possible) and got it right, he wins by a dollar on a double get.

I'd still make the standard shutout wager, just in case second goes all-in (though I'm not sure how often second does this -- if ever -- in 2-player FJs).The champ did go all in on FJ, but with his narrow lead, he would have had to bet $14,301 anyway. *sigh* I wonder if either of them would've been brave enough to bet 0. Bryan bet small, so maybe.I was hoping Bryan would get Kareem to give us a tie going into FJ.
Mid-1950s iconic Japanese 'character' shouldn't have taken me 20 seconds, but a get is a get.

31/56 right.
Ballpark (4), Native (2), Rhyme (1), Whitman (1), Cradle (2), Rock (4)
Above (2), Large (3), "TEN" (3), Yellow (2), Friends (5), Rome (2)
No Lach Trash.
I could only think of Astro Boy, but if Godzilla crossed my mind, I probably would have went with that.

Re: Tuesday, September 20, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
The first truly excellent game of the season! The only LT I got were the missed DDs of John the Baptist and Seoul. Incidentally, the last two DD bets by Rachel were terrible. She had to bet it all with $8800. Betting $6000 made little sense, as she still had a near-zero chance of victory with $2800 remaining.
And it took me about 15 seconds, but I eventually got to Godzilla.
On an unrelated note, "elvin" being initially negged was dreadful. And they should have retroactively taken away the money for the "elvish" rebound.
Incidentally, I answered "butt rash" instead of "diaper rash". Judges?

Re: Tuesday, September 20, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
What would be the over/under for number of tattoos Bryan probably had under his J! outfit? If the line was seven, I would bet the over. Yes, tequila tour manager goes into the hall of fame for title introductions. That stands out and can only help with getting The Call.
It looks like Hello Kitty may be a poll choice. I've also seen one Astro Boy and Bryan had Goku from Dragon Ball.
Godzilla for me although I had the pen at the ready and the gears still moving in case another thought came to me other than Speed Racer which I quickly dismissed.
Tonight was the first Archive hit for POP CULTURE CHARACTERS, but it got a 10/10 in my book for optimism off the name. I'm with Seth on going for the farm, especially on day 2 with big bucks already in the bank.
Rachel had $800 when she took the guess on the $2000 clue to finish in the red. The potential of $2800 still kept her possibly in play to win the game with a few clues remaining and the scores of the gentlemen close. She had 3W and made them count for minus $10,000. Ouch.
