CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Joel Goldes is a dialect coach from Oak Creek, California. One entertainer, famous movie actor, the late Robin Williams, was great with dialects, and I understand you worked with him.

Joel: I did. Very briefly on his last sitcom. I didn't know what to expect from him. I thought he might be sort of all over the map. I'd seen him as a stand-up and was amazed at him in concert, and he was a consummate professional. He was very complimentary of my work, and he took direction very well and asked permission from the producers before he did any improv-ing. It was quite something.

Alex: Isn't that nice, you discovered something really nice about one of your heroes.

Alex: Yoey Sacks is a store planner from New York who appeared in a friend's movie. You were doing a favor for your friend?

Yoey: I was. One of my best friends from high school is a makeup artist, and she invited me out to appear as a zombie in a--

Alex: Zombie?

Yoey: Yes. I was fully made-up with blood and gore. Which is actually made of Jell-O liquid and instant coffee, so it's very energizing.

Alex: But you're not recognizable, are you?

Yoey: Unfortunately, I am.

[Laughter]

Alex: Oh. All right.

Alex: Lani Gonzalez is our champion. At a concert in London--which concert?

Lani: Oh, well, uh, The Flaming Lips.

Alex: And you were asked to go up on stage?

Lani: Yes.

Alex: And perform?

Lani: Yes. The entire time in an elephant costume.

[Laughter]

Lani: And my friend came with me and she was dressed as an eagle, and there were several other people they invited--

Alex: Why were you all dressed up like that?

Lani: They--something they were doing for that tour, they invited audience members up and got them to dress up in animal costumes. And I was one of the lucky ones.

Alex: Who was the lead performer for The Flaming Lips? Was it Monty Hall?

[Laughter]

Alex: You don't have to answer that. Go ahead, pick up your signaling device. Make a selection as we continue.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND

My precall was Brexit and I felt pretty confident that was going to be the correct response. There was also a similar LL question not too long ago.

The "Trolls" movie comes out in a couple weeks. Depending on when this show was taped, are they really supposed to know about the song that goes with a bad movie that isn't out yet? (product placement?)

I said "Young Frankenstein" instead of "The Producers" on that DD because the german made me think of.... Frau Blucher.

I went for Cabaret thinking Liza Minnelli but the retrospectometer reveals that was 1972, grrr! 45R instaget FJ though...

LT #9: Kay Scarpetta > Patricia Cornwell; "poison ivy" (No idea what the clue was going for but instantly recognized Toxicodendron radicans! LOL... Verrazano, Kill Devil Hill, "Upper Respiratory Tract" (spent my day in the clinic peering into a dozen of these, all infected, all very sick... savor the irony!); Melville Dewey > Librarian @ Columbia; pragmatism; Cherokee > NC tribe, and get on MDD: Abednego (plus Shadrach and Meshach) > Daniel. Gosh that's a lota trash, but still no Lach Lock. ;)
The corridors of my mind are plastered with 3M Post-It notes!

Pre called FJ, and really couldn't think of another option. Lots of Lach trash but overall a pretty well-played game.

NHO that Xanadu thing in $200.

Locked up on Frankfort and Regina, NHO Santo Domingo.

Heather sounds like a flower?

Ivan = GI Joe?

I knew the Timberlake tune in "Trolls" had something about "feeling" in it, but I got snagged on the "Dance dance dance dance" part long enough to forget the title. And I've only heard that song about a billion times. Timbaland and Suit & Tie were obvious after the fact, but no hope on the other two.

0/5 in Timberlake. WLT Fallon at $200?

Rocky was made into a musical?!

Lach Trash: Librarian.

Esau was my only get in Bible.

Had FJ! before Alex was halfway through the clue.

Lots of LT, but I thought a lot of it was fairly difficult.

Only got 2, The Producers (sometimes, knowing the years of almost every famous movie pays off) and pragmatism.

Instaget FJ.

I liked all the DD bets. While she erred, the fashionable Yoey betting everything on the first DD of the DJ board was excellent and optimal, giving her the best chance of winning. Betting $5 was probably better than the $800 she did, but nevertheless, recognizing that she wasn't confident in the category and needed to go small was good on Lani's part. And I'm glad that Lani did NOT start off the category with $400, even though starting with $1200 or $1600 might have been marginally better.

However, this game featured one of the most insane FJ bets I've ever seen. Why did Joel, who had a lock on second place and no chance of first place, risk damn near everything, successfully attaining third in the process?

Was he so impressed by Yoey that he just wanted to give her an extra $1000 for her appearance? Is he exceptionally wealthy and simply doesn't care about an extra grand? The mind boggles.

I thought that clue was very difficult to parse, and because of the category I was looking for another place in NC - then the out there guesses by the 2 contestants pushed me even farther away from getting to a guess of my own...
Looks like we have another widespread precall by category tonight. I wasn't that smart, but it came pretty quick with the clue.
I thought Yoey would guess Cabaret for that DD, SOM, was almost as unexpected as San Luis Rey...

Joel opened with a skunk segment and gifted Yoey with an extra $1000.

(Yoey: Who is San Luis Rey?)
(Lani: Who is Rialto?)

No, ladies it's Verrazano. I love it when then there are double LOL guesses.

Lani's Bible knowledge left me puzzled as she knew enough to get OT Esau and NT Elizabeth, yet could not name Daniel as the book on her DD miss. The Archive only has two hits for Nicodemus being asked and I thought that one was very good for $2000 to wrap up the run. No hints and very unlikely to have have three players all fighting for it.

I will have to poll the precall option for Brexit since WORDS IN THE NEWS 2016 seemed to be telegraphing the correct response in my opinion. Fortunately, that was right as otherwise I may have been thrown if it had been something else.

Lani the Lock has opened with three runaways which no one in the next TOC field accomplished. She needs at least another win to join the party with her low side winnings. If Yoey had solved her DD clue then it's possible Lani may have about doubled her 15K winnings from tonight.

This might be common knowledge but the bridge is Verrazano (one z) and the guy is Verrazzano (two z's) simply because of a misspelling. There is a petition to get the bridge spelling changed to the correct double z, but that ship has sailed I think. (ETA: Yep, econgator just explained this above as well)

My confirmation name was/is Nicodemus (in honor of the rat, not the actual guy), which is the only reason I got that one.

Ahhhh, that'll teach me. I just copied what was in the Archive. West Coast disadvantage on one. At least I did not do a copy/comment for the North Carolina category. ;) http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=5441
