TD 322 -- Question 3 results

Post by spell4yr »

3. Indiana is in both Eastern and Central Time. Up until the mid-2000s, the part of the state in Eastern time did not officially observe Daylight Savings Time, although certain counties near Cincinnati and Louisville still observed it unofficially. After the change, all but 12 counties were in Eastern time, and all observed Daylight Savings. Name a U.S. state which covers multiple time zones.

This was more what I was expecting from a question where everyone knew most/all the answers, in that I didn’t expect Michigan to be the sheep.

Wrong answers – 12 points
My wife tried convincing me that the Hopi Indian Reservation was on Pacific Time. The only sources I find say that it, while contained within Navajo Nation (which does observe DST), does not observe DST (like the rest of the state), but is still in Mountain Time.

Thanks to well-timed drops, dott888 moves into the lead and artshep moves into the Top 3. Kentucky and Michigan, however, have dropped our former co-leaders back down the order. With quite a logjam at the top, though, things could change drastically depending on who chose whom from the large pool of Republican governors.

4. Mike Pence has been governor since 2012, and Eric Holcomb, his Lieutenant Governor, won the election this past November. Between Pence and his predecessor, Mitch Daniels, the Governorship has been in Republican control since 2005. Name a currently-serving Republican governor of a U.S. state. Anybody who has won an election, but has not yet been sworn in or taken office (as of November 26, 2016), is not a valid answer for this question.

A couple of tough calls in this one, a few surprising unused answers, and, considering how much he’s been in the news, a rather unsurprising sheep. Singletons galore in this one.

I almost went with this, but realized they aren't in multiple time zones, the reservations just choose whether or not to observe DST.

I almost said Arizona as well, due to that very video, but decided to play it safe and assume instead that named time zones were meant. Texas was the only non-Indiana one I knew; I guess this list is one of those famous trivia staples?

I may have considered expanding the definition and accepting Arizona if more had said it as I could see a potential lack of clarity. (I saw in a couple of upcoming questions that if I host another one I need to be as specific for what I'm looking for as possible.) As it was just my wife, and it's fun to give her 12 points, I let it go. ;)

Re: TD 322 -- Question 5 results

Post by spell4yr »

5. Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the largest, most-famous racetracks in the country, if not the world. While it is most known for open wheel racing through the Indianapolis 500, it has also hosted the Brickyard 400, an annual race in the premier NASCAR Winston/NEXTEL/Sprint Cup Series, since 1994. Name a race track that hosted at least one NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event in 2016. I will accept the city name if it’s different from the track name. I will not accept states unless it’s in the official name of the track (since several states have multiple answers).

I know NASCAR isn't an interest of a lot of people here. But I just wanted to see what answers people could pull out. I have a feeling, for some, it was "I'm pretty sure of Daytona and Talladega, and he spotted us Indianapolis ... everyone knows Daytona, I can't go with that one. I'll do the other superspeedway."

There's trouble in turn 2, we have the big one! The caution flag is out.

I'm trying to get this done as soon as possible, but I want a little time for a couple upcoming questions to digest, as I didn't really think them through nearly as much as I should have. New host jitters; I got affected by the lights. (Oh wait, the lights don't affect anything, I've learned from another thread.) I'll try to at least get through most of the rest by tomorrow, but then I'll be out of town for the weekend on a service trip. Today was a lost day, TD-wise, because of a Wheel audition. Not my favorite Sony Pictures show, but it is what it is. Anyway, I digress. Answer time!

6. Indiana is also known for its basketball, both at the high school level and collegiately. Larry Bird cut his teeth in French Lick and Indiana State before launching a Hall-of-Fame career. Meanwhile, at Indiana University, Bobby Knight became just as known both in the Big Ten and around the country for his chair-throwing tirades as his legendary coaching ability. Name one of the 14 member schools that compete in the Big Ten for basketball.

Much early love was shown for the three most-recent schools to join, although the results leveled themselves off by the end of the submission period. Our friends in Michigan had two choices to spread out so that there wouldn't be another Pure Sheep. And my adopted school that I became a fan of after moving to the Midwest was the only one unused.

Re: TD 322 -- Question 7 results

Post by spell4yr »

7. The University of Notre Dame in South Bend is probably the preeminent Catholic university in the nation. Countless Catholics who have never been to Indiana consider the Fighting Irish almost a secondary alma mater (or even a primary, depending on whom you ask). And yet its actual 12-month enrollment of 12,721 only ranks it #619 in the country. According to NCED, name a Catholic college or university whose twelve-month, unduplicated enrollment ranked among the top 1000 of all colleges and universities, public and private, in 2013-14.

And here's where I learn when I need to either write better questions, or withhold questions entirely. I found it rather difficult to peg the question down to be extensive without creating unnecessary negbait (I figured if I included the first school not on the list, it would make some options become more palatable than they actually were, and result in additional wrong answers). But also, most other ways I could have asked the question would have been too subjective. The list I used, while from the government, is also rather obscure compared to enrollment numbers individual schools report, and in some cases there's a large discrepancy. I appreciate you all working through my growing pains. In the future, I'll come up with a better question, even if that means that the work I did cross-checking school data and searching for schools in an Excel database is for naught.

My benchmark for large Catholic universities are Big East basketball schools: they're all in big cities, and Butler is the only non-Catholic college currently in the conference. As it turns out, eight of the nine Catholic Big East schools made the cut (Providence College being the only exception).

8. The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, was born in Gary, Ind., before making it big first with his brothers and then solo. He also made history in 1995, becoming the first artist to debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “You Are Not Alone”. Name any artist to debut a song at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Not an incredibly surprising sheep ... the second-most choice could only have gone in one direction ... a complete avoidance of anyone American Idol-related.
