It is telling that "missing all five fjs" is polling higher than Tuesday's answer.

And with 59 votes in, zero people are reporting getting all five right. When's the last time that happened? Has it ever occurred?

Treasury on Monday (turns out that while there have been many female Treasurers, all the Secretaries of the Treasury have been men), Coleridge on Tuesday, Old Spice (!) on Wednesday, blank on Thursday, and Costner on Friday. I was 0/5 on the ToC semis and finals, and I thought that putting a weekend between them would save me from logging a week without any FJ gets. I was wrong!

Well, I'm certainly not meaning to pick on you in any way, Seaborgium, but it has to be heartening to the mere mortals here that a TOC finalist can miss a whole week's worth of FJs! Personally, I had had a miserable run the last three weeks to the point where I was questioning what in the world was wrong with me, and I'm finally back to (and above) normal this week. It just goes to show how variable the results of FJs can be.

How does the Wilde FJ (currently at 8%) rank against other all time lows?

Average week for FJs, but it's probably the first time I ever get all 3 bonus clues!

I found my papers for the 2006-2007 season

9/27/06 - Famous Painters: Renoir 8/66 = 12.12%

9/29/06 - National Capitals: Nicosia 6/66 = 9.09%

10/10/06 - Classic Cartoon Characters: Porky Pig 10/63 = 15.87%

3/28/07 - Literary Figures: Wilde 14/73 = 19.18%

I don't have the figures, but I know 12/21/05 and 9/6/04 would make the list of low gets. 9/30/05 was tough as well.

You could say Oscar makes for a Wilde FJ.

Sorry, I couldn't resist the lame pun.

It was buzzer ability and one good (and another's bad) FJ bet that got me to the finals, not knowledge!

While I'm an admirer of your humility, buzzer ability don't do squat for you unless you've got the knowledge to back it up (and I mean that for the number of games you won to get to the TOC as well as getting that far in the tournament).

Feel free to qualify it with the word "superior," then.

:( :(

Mon: Knew Perkins, thought of Solis and Dole in a flash, locked it in.
Tue: The sing-song rhythm reminded me of Robert W. Service, who was barely born in the 19th century.
Wed: Had Lloyd's in a snap. Still stumped for where I recently saw elements of this story: last year's SHC? Anyone?
Thu: Insta-get. Yelled at Matt for his Gulf of Tonkin answer: 1945? Dude, you were good!
Fri: Precalled Redford, wrote down Clooney and Eastwood, dismissed the latter because really, two acting noms for Clint? Shows what I know, sticking with Redford (two director noms (one win), one nom for acting). And apparently unlike most here, I love Heaven Can Wait, though Beatty's performance does not seem nom-worthy. That sequence at the end with Julie Christie gets me every time. No spoilers: watch it with someone you love.

For the extras, two clams and one disoriented miss: Miami (South Beach) for S.F./North Beach. The only Beats in Miami are on boomboxes.

Monday was an instaget, as I thought of Perkins, Dole, Solis and Chao off the top of my head and figured that 75 or so years was plenty of time to have also included 3 other women.

Tuesday -- wow, another strong candidate already for toughest FJ of the year (6% as I write this). I went with Coleridge, even though I didn't think the narrator would have loved the albatross. I never would have come up with Wilde, whom I hadn't thought of as a poet.

Wednesday was an instaget, as soon as I saw 1688, ships, and coffee house. I think the tidbit about Lloyd's starting in a coffee house is pretty well-known, on a par with the NY Stock Exchange having its genesis under a buttonwood tree.

Thursday I went with the Gulf of Tonkin resoluton even though I was pretty sure it was wrong (partly because "gulf of tonkin resolution" didn't seem like a much shorter title); but I couldn't come up with anything better. Until watching that episode this afternoon, I had never known the subject of the Pentagon Papers, although I could have pavlovianly linked them to Ellsberg.

Friday was an instaget with Eastwood. If I'd had to come up with both, I doubt I would have ever goten to Beatty.
Ditto. Like, down to the Coleridge and Gulf of Tonkin negs and the never-would-have-come-up-with-Beatty-ness. That's a little spooky. :o

Saved me some typing, though!

i don't normally post in these threads (though i do vote)—but just thought i should pop in to brag about knowing oscar wilde. i don't normally think of him as a poet either (indeed, he was the #1 starting pitcher on my playwrights baseball team for 8 seasons), but i do know "the ballad of reading gaol". informal polling suggests that none of the other ToC players knew it, so ... yeah, tough clue. any lit question that tom nissley and roger craig both whiff on is pretty brutal.

then again, i had absolutely nothing on lloyd's. bleagh. still, 7 for 8 is a good week.

Ok, I finally have to ask- what?? How is the winner determined? (You've probably explained this at some point. Sorry.)

long story, and it's now so tangential (i think this was the trebek chat topic in my 2nd episode) as to be totally off-topic, but here is the link to the simulated baseball league. "league information" probably has the basics.

The link wasn't too helpful for me. I'm guessing that completely random player ratings are assigned to each playwright?
