Sloane Stephens (unseeded in the tournament, 83rd in the world at the time) wins the US Open after defeating Venus Williams and Madison Keys.
The final featured two African-American women not named "Williams".

The great Rafa Nadal won the US Open for the 3rd time. It is Rafa's 16th overall GrandSlam plus he won the Olympic Gold in tennis a few years back!

Crayola, which retired Dandelion from its 24-crayon set earlier this year, will introduce a new color called "Bluetiful". The name was selected by online vote.

Former world middleweight champion boxer Jake La Motta died at the age of 95. La Motta, who fought Sugar Ray Robinson six times (Robinson won five of the six fights) was made famous to younger generations with the release of Raging Bull (1980). Robert Di Niro won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of La Motta in that film.

Of local interest (to me, anyway) is that several of La Motta's most memorable fights took place at iconic Detroit sports venues: Olympia Stadium and Briggs (later Tiger) Stadium.
