Not that I care other than for trivia purposes, but Star Wars VIII = The Last Jedi

Rogue One some kind of prequel to Star Wars IV has no hits yet, so that is due first on J!

Academy Award nominations were announced this morning.
La La Land received a record-tying 14 nominations (also achieved by All About Eve and Titanic). Tied for second were Arrival and Moonlight, with eight nominations apiece.
Lin-Manuel Miranda received a nomination for Best Song ("How Far I'll Go", from Moana). If Miranda wins, he'll become the 13th EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) and hold the record for the shortest time between the first and fourth EGOT win.
Seven of this year's 20 performance nominees are people of color.
Meryl Streep received her 20th nomination (16 Best Actress, four Best Supporting Actress) for playing the title role in Florence Foster Jenkins.
Not nominated: Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins), Tom Hanks (Sully), and Amy Adams (Arrival).

Venus and Serena Williams are in the finals of the Australian Open.
Venus hasn't been to the championship game of a Grand Slam since 2009.
The last time the two sisters were opposite each other was in the 2015 US Open quarterfinals.

On the men's side, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will be playing against each other in a Grand Slam final for the first time since the 2011 French Open. This will be ninth time the pair have reached the final of a Grand Slam, which is the most of any men's singles rivalry since the Open Era of tennis began in 1968. Incidentally, the Williams sisters will also be playing each other for the ninth time in a Grand Slam final, but that's only the second most-prolific tennis rivalry on the women's side: Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova faced each other 14 times in major finals.Volante wrote:Venus and Serena Williams are in the finals of the Australian Open.

The 2017 Australian Open will also be the first Grand Slam of the Open Era where each of the men's and women's singles finalists are over 30 years old.

Perhaps more helpful, for purposes of this thread being a study guide, to say the following:Bamaman wrote:Della Street and Mannix also died.
Barbara Hale, who played Della Street on the TV show "Perry Mason," died at the age of 94.
Mike Connors (born Krekor Ohanian), who played the title character on the TV show "Mannix," died at the age of 91.

Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus in the finals of the Australian Open for her 23rd major title, passing Steffi Graf for all-time major tennis championships in the open era. Margaret Court had 24 when tennis was amateur only. As mentioned earlier, it was the sisters' ninth meeting in a major finals. Lots of J! fodder there.

Not a current event, but to set the record straight, Margaret Court's career extended into the Open Era where she won several Majors.Kenny wrote:Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus in the finals of the Australian Open for her 23rd major title, passing Steffi Graf for all-time major tennis championships in the open era. This is awfully dismissive of Court's achievements and largely incorrect. There was not a great disparity between female "amateurs" and female "pros" in tennis prior to 1968 like there was with men.Kenny wrote:Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus in the finals of the Australian Open for her 23rd major title, passing Steffi Graf for all-time major tennis championships in the open era. And this is well-reflected in Court's own accomplishments. 10 of her 24 Grand Slam singles titles were achieved in the Open Era, including completing a singles Grand Slam in 1970 (winning all four majors).
One also wonders how many more Grand Slams Court would have won if she hadn't retired for 2 years (from 1966 to 1968) in her prime.

The same is true of the men's final. It was the record ninth time that Federer and Nadal had faced one another in a men’s Grand Slam final. Nadal is the third-oldest player to win a Grand Slam singles titles, and the first to win five singles titles in three different Grand Slam tournaments (Australian, French, and U.S. Opens).Kenny wrote:Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus in the finals of the Australian Open for her 23rd major title, passing Steffi Graf for all-time major tennis championships in the open era.
