The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Re: TD 143: Oh I'll Play Your Game, You Rogue!
Jinkies! I totally didn't expect a singleton here. The Dolphins were the only team I could think of. Everyone makes a big deal about their undefeated season in 1972 and how the feat has never been repeated and there's a UL that the players who are still alive send a case of champagne each year to whatever team keeps their record intact by defeating the last team to still have nothing in the Losses column. It's one of those standard bar bets. "How many games did the Dolphins lose in 1972?"Turd Ferguson wrote: Miami Dolphins (1973, 1974) (1)

Spoiler
1. They lost the Super Bowl to the Dallas Cowboys on January 16, 1972. That was, of course, part of the 1971 season. They won the Super Bowl attached to their undefeated 1972 season. But that was in 1973.

LOL Opus- that reminds me, now is about when I start asking Football fans, "You think you remember things, but I'll bet you can't tell me who won the Superbowl last year!" Very few are alert enough to seek clarification on whether I mean calender year or football season.
I thought the Dolphins would be well-remembered because of all that "down-and-in to Warfield" business Nixon threw their way.

Re: TD 143: Oh I'll Play Your Game, You Rogue!
Speaking of, since the "Ken threw his last game" theory seemed to have a few proponents (not here, I assume), I'll throw out a theory that Roger Craig tanked his last game. Having broken the single-game record, clinched a TOC berth, and become a "superchampion", there was nothing else for Jeopardy! Rockstar Roger to accomplish in regular games (he'd have known enough about probability to assume he had no realistic chance of winning 75 straight games). So, instead of giving his future TOC opponents any more clues about his strengths and weaknesses and strategies, he saw an opportunity to end his run while making it believable, even making it look like TPTB were conspiring against him ("FJ! is on "Sports and the Media", and I'm playing a sportswriter!").Paucle wrote:LOL Opus- that reminds me, now is about when I start asking Football fans, "You think you remember things, but I'll bet you can't tell me who won the Superbowl last year!" Surely he knew who won the last Super Bowl, but missing a clue like that would also provide a "red herring" about a potential area of weakness for his TOC opponents. It all makes sense, now!

The long answer is: I remember you being a Stones fan from the "Name a song on Let It Bleed" TD question a while back. Re: TD 143: Oh I'll Play Your Game, You Rogue!
There went a point. My subject header when I sent in my responses had Colts or Orioles as part of it. I thought Baltimore was a good way to go.
Re: TD 143: Oh I'll Play Your Game, You Rogue!
Should have gone with my gut and my longstanding "home team" rule for TD (If a local answer is valid, use it. Regardless if the category is sports or anything else.) I was pretty sure the Cowboys won during Nixon's time, but I was certain the Steelers won in 1974 (turns out I was thinking of 1975, for the '74 season). Rats. I had risen close to the middle of the pack but no longer...
Re: TD 143: Oh I'll Play Your Game, You Rogue!
I was surprised no one fell for the Jets' neg bait. They won SBIII in 1969, but LBJ was still in office then.

10. FAMOUS HORSEMEN
Alex Trebek: Sean Connery, just pick a category.
Sean Connery: I’ll take whore semen for 800 (walks towards the board)
Alex Trebek: What, wait, where are you going?
Sean Connery: (pointing to the category) See? Whore, like your mother. Semen. Ha ha ha. It’s right there!
Alex Trebek: I see it, now please… you’re very proud of yourself, aren’t you
Sean Connery: Yes, I am!
Name any member of either group, or Head Coach of the Notre Dame team, or the famed sportswriter who gave the Notre Dame foursome their nickname.
I was disappointed to learn that Bret Harte appears in the J! Archive 15 times while Bret “Hitman” Hart only appears once, so thought this would be an opportunity to throw a part-wrestling question out there. I expected this would be a tough question (though was surprised at the number of wrestlers who were named), so put Knute Rockne’s name in the question as an “easy out”.
Enjoying the writing on ESPN.com’s Bill Simmons’ offshoot site http://www.grantland.com, I thought I’d throw the man the site was named for in there as an option, too. Rice has been mentioned by name in several J! clues, but the only time he was asked for as a response (Kevin Marshall’s seventh game), it was a triple stumper, and the contestants were spotted “Rice”.
MarkBarrett reclaims the lead on a neg by Volante, though there are now a number of entrants trailing closely behind.

11. I HAVE A CHARDONNAY
Alex Trebek: Mr. Connery, still your board
Sean Connery: I’ll take “I Have a Hardon for 600” (board appears as “I HAVE A CHARDONNAY)
Alex Trebek: I can’t believe this, where did you get that magic marker? We frisked you on the way in here
Sean Connery: I didn’t have it in my pocket.
Name a movie in which Paul Giamatti appears
I actually had seen 17 Giamatti films, a number that is several times as high as I would have guessed (not actually remembering him in more than 5 or 6). Making it clear that “Sideways” was a correct answer was a bone thrown to anyone unable to come up with something, and it ended up (perhaps “artificially”) shaping the results into the kind of distribution I like to see in TD questions. As it happens, the three films that came to my mind first (Saving Private Ryan, American Splendor, and Barney’s Version) all went unnamed, but a wide variety of films were given.
Lots of singletons by the leaders leave the standings largely unchanged.

Big Fat Liar was the one I wanted, but I could not recall the name. If the movie had been named "Guy Turns Blue" I would have had it. Going for the Shyamalan film as a second choice worked out better.

12. JAPAN US RELATIONS
Alex Trebek: Okay Mr. Connery
Sean Connery: I’ll take Jap Anus Relations for 200
[laughter]
Alex Trebek: I’m sorry, that’s Japan US Relations. That’s just awful and you know it.
Name a Japanese head of govt or head of state since 1980
Mark Barrett speculated about Fujimori from Peru being given as an answer, and I can’t see how the wording would have excluded the dual-citizen Peruvian leader who is perhaps more “known” than any of the Japanese Prime Ministers (mostly because Japanese PMs don’t tend to last long). The two sheep here are quite predictable. I’m not sure if the wording scared some away from naming Hirohito, but I was not expecting a sheep of this magnitude (nor was mitchparov, apparently).
It’s interesting how the leaders of such a prominent nation have managed to stay so (relatively) obscure in North America. The only time I remember seeing a Japanese leader shown on The Daily Show was when the “guy with the hair” (who I now see is Junichiro Koizumi) went to Graceland with George Bush.

The only reason I remembered Takeshita is because he was the PM when we learned the leaders of the world in middle school. He sticks in the head mainly because his name has an easily-deciphered anagram that's sort of appropriate for the "Celebrity Jeopardy!" theme.

Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.
