I really enjoyed Q 1 about the Chinese zodiac (and the race, which I hadn't known about).

My JBoard avatar is based on my Chinese zodiac sign. When we were first dating, my now-husband and I knew there was a big age difference between us, but we decided not to get too specific (possibly because I’m the older one). After dating for several months, when eating at a Chinese restaurant and faced with the familiar Chinese zodiac place-mat, we decided it was time for the great reveal. He identified himself as a pig/boar, and I as a monkey (and yes, also a cougar). The animal signs are very appropriate for both of us, and ever since then, we have collected lots of pictures, knick-knacks, etc. of monkeys and boars, which we have all over the house.

If you haven't been on Jeopardy yet, keep this story handy. It's better than 90% of the interview stories I hear on the show.

3. 歲歲平安 - PEACE. [13 possible answers] Another auspicious saying (suìsuìpíngān) wishes a long period of peace upon the listener. Of the 21 imperial Chinese dynasties (the first of which was the Qin), thirteen ruled for over 100 years. Name one of them.

N.B. I'll admit that I didn't phrase this question very well; that became clear as the answers came in. The specifics about "type species" in the question comes because two specific types of tuna are categorized as "Highest Mercury," while other types of tuna appear in other categories. There were a number of people who responded "TUNA," which isn't specific enough for the question as phrased. Because certain type species of tuna appear in other categories on the wallet card, I've decided that a correct type species of tuna was required for credit on this question.
4. 年年有餘 - FISH (sort of). [7 possible answers] Yet another auspicious saying (niánniányǒuyú) wishes a bountiful harvest and surplus for the listener--a holdover from the farming days. This saying is often depicted as a barrel overflowing with fish, as the last character of this saying (餘) shares the same pronunciation as the character for fish, 魚. The Natural Resources Defense Council has published a ‘Mercury in Fish’ wallet card, categorizing seafood by their mercury content. This wallet card suggests that consumers avoid eating eight type species of fish because they contain the “Highest Mercury.” One example is king mackerel--name one of the others. (N.B. The card gives two types for one species of fish; only one type species need be given for credit. An example of species is ‘mackerel’; an example of type species is ‘king mackerel.’)

Now I must register a complaint. I understand that the answer of tuna was not specific enough to be graded, but you as the TD author should have asked us by PM to be more specific, especially since, as you say, the wording of the question wasn't altogether clear. Speaking only for myself, I can say that I was thinking of yellowfin (ahi) tuna when I answered, but the request for "type of fish" led me to the more general answer.

I could get behind scoring tuna as correct, but throwing out the question when some of us used our drop on it would be rather unfair.

The question is pretty clear as written IMO and even gives an example of "type species" as king mackerel vs. mackerel. Q says there are two type species on the list but you only need to give one. So I'm fine with whatever the host wants to do.

I figured there would be some unhappy folks no matter how I chose to score this question, so I decided to score as written (which, again, I admit I didn't phrase very well). I elected not to drop the question entirely because some entrants used their UNITE or FLEE option, which they could have used on another question. I elected not to score "Tuna" as correct because there could have been entrants who forwent a type species of tuna for another fish because they didn't know which type species of tuna to put (not all type species are "Highest Mercury"--I would have scored as incorrect "albacore tuna," for example).

To those of you who think this comes back to the way I phrased the question, please accept my mea culpa; I don't think any of the subsequent questions (or, hopefully, any of my subsequent TD's) will have this kind of issue.

6. 粘糕 - STICKY CAKE. [14 possible answers] A traditional Chinese New Year food is the 粘糕 (niángāo), a sticky rice cake. This is another play on words: the middle two characters of the auspicious saying 年年高升 (niánniángāoshēng) share the same pronunciation as 粘糕. There are 14 countries “stuck” to China on its 13,743-mile-long land border. Name one of the countries that borders China. (N.B. “China” refers to the People’s Republic of China. “Country” refers only to a sovereign state. A Special Administrative Region does not count as a “country” for this question.)

My thought process: it'll be a good move to go to SE Asia. Jot down SE Asian countries, without regard to whether they actually touch China. Later, choose one, without filtering for the China adjacency requirement. Not too costly, but embarrassing.
