Only four champions thus far with five wins or more. That's not very strong. Season 27 was one of my favorites with all the great champions.

Augh, looking at this list just kills me! (Seriously, how many of them can I poison???!?) If only I'd known there were even the remotest possibility of my ending up as any kind of contender... I would've, I don't know, tried harder? Stopped being so terrible on the buzzer? Taken performance-enhancing drugs?? Something! Gaaaahhhhh.

Does anyone know when the season officially ends?

The season ends on Friday, August 3rd, but that has nothing to do with the TOC cutoff. The next TOC will likely be in February or May 2013. It's held when the powers decide to hold it and not season to season like the old days. David Gard is right around the bubble. You and those below him can keep regretting your loss with the TOC out of sight, unfortunately for you.

As it stands, the statistics are as follows:

Chronologically:

Jason Keller
Dave Leach
Dan McShane
Monica Thieu
Patrick Quinn
David Gard
Joel Pool
David Menchaca

Winnings:

Jason Keller - $213,900
Joel Pool - $116,800
David Menchaca - $115,503
Monica Thieu - $100,000
Patrick Quinn - $100,000
Dave Leach - $98.054
David Gard - $84,700
Dan McShane - $62,001

Days:

Jason Keller - 9
Joel Pool - 6
Dave Leach - 6
David Manchaca - 5
David Gard - 4
Dan McShane - 4

Coryat (rounded to the nearest hundred):

Jason Keller - $19,000
David Menchaca - $17,600
Dan McShane - $17,400
Dave Leach - $16,500
David Gard - $15,600
Patrick Quinn - $12,900
Joel Pool - $10,300
Monica Thieu - $9,500

...for four-day or greater winners. With the highest Coryat, the highest winnings, and the most time to prepare, Jason is the one to beat. At this point, excluding three day winners, there are only eight qualifiers, so wouldn't Dan McShane (who I still think will make it in) be "on the bubble"? In terms of three-day winners, Patrick Morrison and Francis Lansangan seem like the likeliest potential qualifiers since their respective $80,701 and $78,401 are nearly $25,000 above the next highest three-day winner. Francis's Coryat is $18,600 (the second highest of all the aforementioned) and Patrick's is $17,900 (the third highest).

The last week of the season (7/30-8/3) is Kids' week, which means the NBC stations might be preempting J! for Olympic coverage as the Olympics bow on 7/27. INteresting that they'd pick a special week to air that week when there are NBC stations' possible preemptions .

This field is weak. I'd bet on Morrison as a dark horse.

Honestly, I think the producers will extend the eligibility period as long as necessary in order to prevent three-timers from getting in.

Why do you feel that way? :?:

I've been "riding" him as my favorite, too. I like his and Francis's chances to do well if they get in.

I doubt it. The 2006 ToC had five 3xers, and it was only a year and 8 months between the 2004 and 2006 ToCs. Those 20 months included part of Ken Jennings' run and the UToC, so that would have given TPTB even more justification to extend it.

And we still have a long way to go before the next ToC. I wouldn't feel confident if I was a 3xer or a 4xer with a lower amount of money won.

So I don't suppose it matters that I won $1000 for my third-place finish Wednesday, giving me a final total of 61,402? :-)

Only to the IRS. No, I'm pretty sure consolation money doesn't factor into your total as far as TOC qualifying goes.

Since the institution of $1,000 for third and $2,000 for second, we haven't had a ToCer whose total was less than $1,000 above someone who didn't make it. But the Hall of Fame on the J! site doesn't include the money incurred in a loss, so I have to assume they don't factor it in for determining ToC entry. Maybe if two players who earned the same amount in the same number of victories were #15/#16 in the rankings, and one had finished in third and the other in second, the second-place finisher would take priority.

Maybe they define the amount as "winnings", which would exclude the consolation money.
