Kendra Anspaugh, a community college instructor from New Orleans, Louisiana (whose 1-day cash winnings total $34,300)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. And thank you, ladies and gentlemen. In case you missed our Friday show, Kendra was full value for that $34,000 win. She was impressive. She was gutsy. She was dominating.

Kendra: Thank you.

Alex: But take a look at our players today. Patti and Clayton do not appear intimidated by her. Let's see what that means. Good luck to all three of you. Here we go--the Jeopardy! Round and these are your categories. First off...

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Kendra: $8,200

Clayton: $400

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Patti Clements is an attorney from Audubon, Pennsylvania. And she must be bright, otherwise she wouldn't have qualified as a contestant on our show. But even in spite of that, you've been getting help from a lot of people in your town to prepare you for your appearance here today.

Patti: Yes, I've been saying it takes a village to prepare for Jeopardy! And that's absolutely true. I've had consultations for my outfit. I've had my husband and my family, uh, preparing me with Jeopardy! parties.

Alex: Is it true the postman also gave you some--

Patti: The postman comes in every day whistling the song and giving me a Jeopardy! question.

Alex: Okay. Well, they want you to do well, and that's good.

Patti: They do.

Alex: Clayton Hanson is a park ranger from Spokane, Washington.

Clayton: Absolutely.

Alex: And what's this about you being forced to watch The Sound of Music in Salzburg?

Clayton: Oh, yes. Now this is a pretty funny story. I was, uh, studying abroad in Prague, and my friend Tara, she was in Dresden. She said, "Hey, let's go to, uh, Austria. I'll drive down, pick you up, and then we'll drive through the, you know, the mountains, and it'll be really pretty, but on one condition--I'm a huge Sound of Music fan, so we have to watch the movie, and we have to go on the Sound of Music tour when we're in Salzburg." And I said, "Well, fine, fine." So we ended up in, uh, well, since I'm from the Northwest, we ended up on a tour with, uh, two other people from the Northwest, uh, where this sort of Austrian drolly was making jokes while we were driving around and seeing, you know, the gazebo and everything else.

Alex: Hmm.

Clayton: It was a little weird, but pretty funny, ultimately.

Alex: Okay, well, good. I'm glad you enjoyed it--a fun experience.

Alex: Kendra, you are a community college instructor--

Kendra: Yes.

Alex: --and your college degree was in what?

Kendra: Tropical medicine.

Alex: And you specialized in...

Kendra: Tapeworms.

Alex: Tapeworms?

Kendra: Yes.

Clayton: Hmm.

Kendra: I was trying to create a protocol to amplify DNA from a type of pig tapeworm.

Alex: Of course.

Kendra: Yes.

Alex: I'm very familiar with that.

Kendra: Everybody does that.

Alex: But we can't talk about it on our show, so maybe you should just select another clue for us.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
THE LIGHTER "SIDE" $1000: This 7-letter word means to abate

THE SPOUSE IMMEDIATELY BEFORE $800: ...Steffi Graf
(Alex: [*] married to Andre Agassi.)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Kendra: $11,000
Patti: $2,600
Clayton: $2,000

Kendra Anspaugh performed impressively again today. She was able to get out to such a quick start at the beginning of the game that catching up to half of her score before Final Jeopardy! was going to be a challenge, and she just didn't allow the other players any real foothold by which to leverage themselves into contention.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Kendra Anspaugh ends up being the first Tournament of Champions qualifier for next year's event. Based on what I've seen from her through two games, she would fit in well with any ToC field of fifteen.

Kendra's looking pretty tough so far. After the Carousel of Champions™ spun round and round for a week after the TOC, we've had two solid champions. Francis won't make it to the next one, but Kendra certainly might.

The clues in the Double Jeopardy round, though... UGH. Absolutely horrible.

Impressive performance by the champ. I wouldn't be surprised to see her in the TOC.

On a side note, must we have another celebrity marriage category so close to last one?

Kendra's running two categories right off the bat was impressive. It illustrates the advantage that the returning champion has in buzzer timing and control. FJ was an Instaget; I will forever hear the name Copernicus pronounced in Brian Regan's voice. As in his science fair routine.

I thought the same thing. I also thought Reagan's first wife was overvalued. Strangely, when Alex read the category, I thought about Wyman as an example.

My thinking on FJ......Some guy who lived around 1600 (forgot the years mentioned) who made the Church mad but was recently forgiven. Got to be Galleleo. Wait, he wasn't Polish...must be Copernicus

Ouch. I overthought, got hung up on Jan Hus, and missed what will probably turn out to be the easiest FJ! of the week.

Kendra is a pretty steely competitor. I look forward to seeking how far she can take it.

Almost exactly my thoughts too... But, why give Nancy Davis' married name? Even if she wasn't very well known, it wasn't a top-row clue.

And, wrt Kendra, we wouldn't be having this discussion but for James handing her the game on a silver platter. I'm very glad he did.

FJ was an Instaget if there ever was one for me. I had it solved before Alex was halfway finished reading the clue. I read it Bob Harris style: bla bla bla Poland, bla bla bla the Church bla bla bla umpteen hundred years ago.

Same pre-call here.

Same again here but with a longish detour trying to talk myself into the idea that Martin Luther or John Calvin was the best guess I was going to come up with. My mind kept going around circles. "Those aren't great guesses. Even Calvin is probably a little too early." "Ok, smart guy, but what other theologian could it be? Jan Hus is even earlier. John Knox wouldn't be buried in Poland." "Uh huh. Like Calvin would be buried in Poland. He's in Geneva. You know that." "Ok, what about Luther? Maybe he's buried in a part of Poland that used to be part of Germany." "Doubtful. Plus, Luther's too early." "So name a theologian who would work better."

Finally, the third stooge that makes up my inner dialogue smacked one of those two on the back of the head, poked the other in the eyes, and said, "It doesn't have to be a THEOLOGIAN, you numbskulls! Why, I oughta..."

From there to Galileo to Copernicus was almost instantaneous and I got my response down just in time.

Kendra almost looks a little amazed at how easy J! has been for her so far. She has outplayed her opponents and it seems to come effortlessly.

Me got scalped in Native American Food scoring no wampum.

FJ was better for me to join the players in the cinch solve. I agree it should score a high percentage in the poll.

Jan Hus takes bigshots to get:

Mine was about the same only...more...targeted: blah blah Poland, blah blah reburied with honors last y- Copernicus!

Almost shut out on spouses (only got Bruce Willis in time), totally shut out on Native American foods (I'm not exactly the most cooking savvy (I consider it a success when I don't burn the water) but is 'thickener' really worthy of the $400 spot?). Other than that I liked these boards. If I counted correct guesses where I didn't buzz in I'd've racked up a 45 (still ended up with 38, so, still respectable...only downside is...they've used these boards now  )

wow, kendra is awesome. also, not that the boards i played on were bad for me, but wow, what i wouldn't give to have been able to play on her two boards! i especially liked "new math" (duh), and i was not expecting there to be a DD in that category (well, until they played the other 5 and there was still one missing).

now i'm *really* looking forward to seeing her tomorrow, especially since a friend of mine will be playing*. the post-ToC doldrums now seem like a distant memory.

* who was also a contestant on my second tape day, but didn't get to play because i got drawn into the first game and never lost. he's ridiculously bright, but he'll need to be on his game to take down kendra.

Yeah, I thought it was fine/simple. (you're asking if it was too hard, right?)

This game was easy breezy beautiful for the champ and afterwards I wondered if she's that much of a killer, or if her opponents weren't very strong today (I missed friday's show). Based on joon's post, tomorrow should be a good test for her.

Jan hus is getting a lot of mentions in the thread considering he has nothing to do with Poland (right? Apologies if this is my ignorance). Copernicus is probably the only polish guy that the show would ask about within hundreds of years of that time frame. Really, a one word clue of "Poland" could have been a triple get by the players. Weak fj clue, but whatever, better that it's too easy (favoring the leader) than too hard in my opinion.

Having eaten in that cafeteria was not much help in that category (it's actually a pretty popular spot known for its good food).

Yes, Kendra did pretty darn well again, but as always I refuse to make any TOC predictions this early. Sometimes luck works in your favor, and sometimes it doesn't. We'll have to see what the Flying Fickle Finger of Fate has in store for her.
