I never read Black Swan, but some speaker somewhere mentioned where the name of the book came from, so luckily that was enough to solve Friday's FJ.

For the Spencer Tracy movie, I never would have thought of The Old Man and the Sea. Best I could come up with was Captains Courageous, though it seemed unlikely. Turns out he played a Latin-named fisherman in that, too!

I'm surprised "platypus" wasn't given as an alternate in the poll for Friday's FJ response. That's what I said just to have something, since I know they're associated with Australia.

Apart from Monday, that was a brutal week on FJ. I guess the writers wanted to end the season with a flurry of triple stumpers. Never even knew Spencer Tracey was a Brit.

Naval Academy was instaget. Guesses Switzerland for the European highest capital country but knew it had to be wrong. Said "Inherit the Wind" on the Tracy movie; knew it wasn't "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" but didn't even think of a Hemingway adaptation. I've read "The Black Swan" but no chance at that FJ. Blah week for me.

But instaget for rational numbers.

That's ok. Even his own mother didn't know, what with him being born in Milwaukee and all. He must've converted on the sly.

I think this was my worst FJ week ever.
I have the exact score so I will quote this victim. I'm a newbie and singletons are new to me. Glad to see the "rational" clue quoted, I Pavloved right to "composite" and didn't analyze the question, mostly thinking that was difficult enough to merit the clue (i forget the box value). This is a reverse definition to me, and kudos to the writers for making us stumble.

I went with a Swiss kangaroo reading Death of a Salesman and couldn't even WAG ONE british actor for all the turd guesses.
Thanks to all for sharing and being so decent on this board. I joined following Cyndi Stowell's run as I found out about this resource. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure, but a lot more rewarding than posting on political echo chambers where you get flamed no matter how polite you are. I'm curious to see what the hiatus is like without the daily fix. :D

After getting 14 FJ's in a row correct, I miss the last 3 of the season -- although there's no shame in missing Friday's hot mess of a clue.

I've never seen the film The Old Man and the Sea (nor read the novella, for that matter).

As of now, the black swan clue is polling at 7% (which is actually higher than I expected), and the Old Man and the Sea clue is polling at 14%. Board historians: when is the last time 2 FJ's during the same week polled at 15% or less?

Average Coryat: $24,484 overall, $23,686 regular play

That's never happened before in the history of JBoard (the closest being the 18% get on Henry James in the same week as the flight simulator goose egg). MarkBarrett has posted previously that the week of 9/25/06 contained two of the all-time toughest FJs:
MarkBarrett wrote: Mon Nov 21, 2011 2:55 pm 9/27/06 - Famous Painters: Renoir 8/66 = 12.12%

9/29/06 - National Capitals: Nicosia 6/66 = 9.09%

At least I got one of the 2 hardest...
I saw at least part of TOMATS (too bad it's not The Old Man and The Ocean!) on TV when I was a child. Never had a wish to revisit it as an adult, though I like Spencer Tracy. Still, I don't get the low polling on this one...
On Fri I went with Uluru...only I wrote Uhuru, so it was a busted way to end the season all around!!
Went with "rational" only because it's a "wise" word.

I'm guessing this isn't going to poll more than 30% given what I've been hearing people saying so you may be a bit off base with your declaration. I'm not sure how you got it, but I wasn't surprised at all that it was a TS. I would have answered Inherit the Wind as others did. If I could remember the title in 30 seconds. Was totally blanking on the title though. Hey, it was late, I was tired ...
Seeing as how it's polling 15%, I stand by comment. And that is how it was a TS.

Point taken! But it still surprises me. I mean, it shouldn't because I've commented that folks around here have a lot of knowledge in a wealth of subjects, but the collective Achilles Heel seems to be movies. It's one of the easiest categories in which to become readily conversant, thanks to TCM, but resistance is strong here. :geek:

Yes...but no. I mean, I've had a 400+ disc Netflix queue since I first signed up with them over a decade ago (and this is on top of the streaming one). Heck, I didn't even realize they made a film adaptation of that and film is not one of my weaker subjects. There's just SO MANY.

Except that it really depends on what you have in your 400 movie queue at Netflix. The beauty of TCM - in my opinion - is that you're getting a pretty wide breadth of movies. And I'm not saying that you have to quit your job, stay home and watch TCM, but keeping in mind that Alex is a huge movie buff - and appeared at a TCM celebration of Robert Osborne's life - it's a an easy way to study a fun category that is going to keep showing up.
