I can't be certain anymore because it would have been 42 years ago, but it's possible I've been to El Escorial.

Doubtful. They are two separate towns.

Well, at least I saved myself a point or two by clamming instead of blurting the wrong answer (if one can blurt at a keyboard). We visited Monasterio Sao Jeronimus last spring and saw several royal tombs. Fortunately, I realized it was in Lisbon, not Madrid, and left it blank. Not familiar with El Escorial at all.

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks.

Managed to follow this perfecto with a 21 point day, which I'm sure will be one of the lower totals for R2D4. The SHC giveth, and the SHC taketh away.

I will say this, at least I'm clamming a lot more this year. It's probably saved me a lot of points already, including a few today. Hopefully I can keep staying clam.

After clamming on the 9-12 pointers on Spain, I almost clammed the 15 pointer as I thought "Alaric--Visigoths? It can't be that easy..." :?

Feeling like a gambling woman on this rainy Friday. Guessed some things I should have CLAMmed. Now to survey the damage, haha.

Misreading the Route 66 question gets me today.

Four Corners seems awfully difficult for the three-pointer in the "Highways" category.

It's the sports angle that eases the difficulty level.

Alas, I suck at sports and so it eased nothing. I got hung up on thinking the 666 was significant and trying to think of a landmark that sounded "doomy."

Yes, obviously, but that still seems awfully obscure for a "top row" clue. I actually watch college basketball sometimes and hadn't heard of that.

I went with The Grand Canyon because it's clearly the most well-known monument in the Southwest.

Spoiler
I got lucky, knowing US 666 from Tony Hillerman's novels about Navajo Country. It passes through Shiprock and is quite close to Four Corners
. Of course, it also helps that I've traveled extensively through there, as the Dean Smith clue did nothing for me. OTOH, I had a major RTFQ moment when I somehow overlooked the key phrase "real estate" in the 8 pointer. Arrgh!

ETA: Spoilerized for anyone who's going to play the Four Corners 1DS on LL

I saw "streaming service" and never got away from thinking of video streaming services. "Netflix doesn't have a P, Crackle belongs to Sony, and Hulu belongs to NBCUniversal [actually it's a joint venture owned in equal parts by them, Fox, and Disney/ABC (and a smaller part by Turner)], so what the heck is left!? Clam."

I thought of video streaming services and did come up with one that begins with P (Periscope). I didn't realize that it's owned by Twitter. I would have done better to not come up with it and stay clam.
