I'm not surprised I made that mistake since I live within walking distance of Irving St. and I've probably only written his name as Dr. J. previously. Thanks, and the test will be if a another opportunity comes for me to write the star's name in full.Linear Gnome wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2017 1:28 pmErving. Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread
I bombed yesterday, with lowlights including having thought of Lee instantly and then overthinking my way back out of it and getting it wrong. Lucked into a win anyway, since my opponent assigned 3 points to the meninges question (likely because I'd missed the previous science one) and I knew that one.

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread
Well that didn't take long. I lost 0(0)-2(1) yesterday. I should have had Lee (guessed Frederick Douglass) and probably would have had Oral Roberts if I had RTFQ and saw "university." I may have also played better defense if I had gotten Lee. Despite the tough questions I still let a winnable match slip away.

Did they accept knish for kreplach?
Cause I know jeopardy accepts kreplach for knish, but maybe not the other way around.

Lost both of my matches yesterday on defense. That was fun. I tend to pride myself on my defense...

I think that perhaps they should have accepted knish -- my quick-and-dirty research suggested it fit the clue -- but they didn't accept it, or I would have gotten credit for it. I didn't raise it with Thorsten bc I figured that due to my last name, my opponent would zero me on it, and he as a non-Jewish southerner was much more likely to guess "knish" (which is a more well-known thing outside of the Jewish community, or maybe my view on that is distorted bc you can get them from food carts in NYC) and to thereby benefit from a favorable ruling on that issue. Then my opponent ended up forfeiting anyway, so it all worked out.

Example of knowing your opponent: my regular opponent was from Oklahoma, not too far from Oral Roberts University. Once I realized the answer, the 0 was locked in very quickly. That would have been 2 points otherwise. Got me the 4(3)-3 (3) win.

I put knish for that one as well. Curious to see if chatter will pick up on the LL board.hbomb1947 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2017 9:33 amI think that perhaps they should have accepted knish -- my quick-and-dirty research suggested it fit the clue -- but they didn't accept it, or I would have gotten credit for it. I'm also mad at myself for missing "hammer and sickle." The Cyrillic writing in the clue should have been a dead giveaway. Instead, I under-thought it and went with "stars and stripes."

Well, if knish had been accepted I would have won in my main Rundle (instead of losing) and tied in my PR (instead of losing). Not arguing that it should have been, but that one hurts a bit.

My wrong answer was, "Don't tread on me" using the serp/snake logic.hbomb1947 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2017 9:48 amDon't tread on yourself.KellyLasiter wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2017 9:37 amI got stuck on "serp" and put "snake in the grass." WTF, self?
For the kreplach discussion I was marked correct for my "kreplas."

It would have helped to know what vexillology was, which I did not.econgator wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2017 10:47 amThat was the best I could come up with, too.KellyLasiter wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2017 9:37 amI got stuck on "serp" and put "snake in the grass." WTF, self?

I did exactly the same thing -- I knew that i meant 'and' (but nothing else), and I figured it would be a delightfully ironic thing. I may also have been thinking of Welsh sêr 'stars', though two Indo-European languages that are that distantly related would not have cognates that sounded that similar, even if they were cognates!
Maybe it'll be picked up for a BWA?
