Game Recap for Show #7587, 2017-09-12

CONTESTANTS
Chris Fennell, a professor from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Linda Shaver-Gleason, a musicologist from Lompoc, California
Laura Kelsay, a hotel desk reception clerk from Grand Island, Nebraska (whose 1-day cash winnings total $14,400)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Good to have you with us. Laura, as you've just heard, $14,400. It would have been more, but we had a really tough Final on yesterday's program. Linda and Chris, you're hoping that today's Final will be easier, I know. Good luck, players. Here we go. Let's see what we can deal with in these categories...

Chris: $1,400

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Chris Fennell is from one of my favorite cities: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. You do research on bilingual babies. What in particular?

Chris: I look at how they learn words, how they learn language sounds from birth. I'm really interested in how you acquire two languages from the get-go. It's a very topical line of research.

Alex: Okay. Nice.

Alex: Linda Shaver-Gleason is from Lompoc, California. Writes a blog that does what exactly?

Linda: I debunk music history myths.

Alex: Like?

Linda: Like one of the easiest ones is that Salieri did not in fact kill Mozart. But another one that people think is true is that Bach was completely forgotten and then he was rediscovered in the 19th century. It's not quite like that. He was actually still known; he was still studied. He was seen more for composition rather than actually live performance. But yeah. That's one of the things I debunk.

Alex: And children.

Linda: Yes, and lots of children.

Alex: Lots of children.

Alex: Laura Kelsay is our champion. She is from Grand Island, Nebraska. It sounds like a really nice place. Is it?

Laura: Yes. It is.

Alex: What's special about it?

Laura: We are home to the largest migration of sandhill cranes--

Alex: Oh.

Laura: In the world. And they come through late February through early April.

Alex: That would be exciting watching that.

Laura: And land--we have people come from all over the world to watch the cranes.

Alex: Okay. So there is something very special about there.

Laura: Yes.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Laura found the Daily Double on the 27th clue. Laura had $4,600, Linda had $4,600, and Chris was at $3,200. Laura wagered $1,200.

20th CENTURY NOVELS $1000: A domesticated dog reverts to its wild state in "The Call of the Wild"; the opposite happens in this other book by Jack London

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
VICKI LEAKS $1000: Although she had 9 children, Queen Victoria was the last monarch of this royal house

ALSO A BASEBALL WORD $600: In 1894 the federal government used an injunction to break up a railway one of these

ART & ARTISTS $1000: Though the Spanish court painter, he portrayed the vulgarity of the family of Charles IV

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Laura: $6,600
Linda: $4,600
Chris: $3,200

It only took two games for J! to have enough time to run a full roll of the staff credits.

Laura was 4/4 on the big clues, so that is often a path to playing another game.

I matched the players to keep the clue at 100% with no detour to Taylor Swift. Alex threw me for a second with his remarks after the music as I thought he was leading towards some old timer still around.

I wasn't sure on FJ, but since Adele is about the most overplayed artist ever she was my go to. And even though it's only 2 days into the season I still can't believe that I'm batting 1.000 on FJs!

Lord Byron for 2000? Chaplin a DD when spotted 'The Great Dictator'!? It's a new season, you had time off to write better clues, J! writers. Actually, I thought all of the DDs were a joke, and this game could've been a massacre had she not wagered such pitiful amounts. Nothing pleases me more than a long winning streak but I'm not sure I want to watch a week's worth of DDs pissed away

Instaget FJ.

Two games, two sports-related categories left to die. Off to a smashing start.

I wonder how many different intros they've got saved up.

Coryat: $21,600
DDs: 0/3
FJ!: :( (Went with Beyoncé. Taylor Swift also crossed the mind, but didn't make any leap to Adele. Damn.)

Went to Mel Brooks instead of Charlie Chaplin. "Jewish" and the odd name took me there. Should have gone with the only other person in recent history to sport a toothbrush mustache.

Most everything in the Bible category came a second too late, or was an "of course" after the fact.

Ran Whirled of Warcraft and Works Like A Charm.

Middling game for me otherwise.

You're not the only one.

TFW you miss an FJ that's a triple-get for the contestants. :(

There's a reason that pop music is my single-worst category in LL. In this case, I know who Adele is and am familiar with some of her songs, but I don't follow the Grammys. Grammy winners are one thing I would have to study if I ever get The Call.

Should just "Lautrec" have been accepted, as it was, for Tolouse-Lautrec on that one Art & Artists clue? Granted, it's a little complicated since his full name was Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa , but I've never heard him referred to as anything less than Toulouse-Lautrec.

I guessed Amy Winehouse. As soon as I saw the first response revealed, I knew it was right.

Any other boardies batting .500 for the season because they missed today's FJ?

Weak clues tonight. Charlie Chaplin in Great Dictator as a DD, Voltaire at 1600, and Byron at 2000 was just pitiful.

Coryat today was 19600. 6400 at J, 13200 in DJ, and as expected all 3 DDs were correct. Took me a while to get to Adele for FJ (for some reason I was thinking of Kanye, Jay-Z, and Bruno Mars before I remembered).

Ugh! Two days into the new season and we get our first Millennial pop-culture FJ. This does not bode well. Guessed Taylor Swift, but I don't really give a crap which overhyped, electronically enhanced voice wins an Emmy.
