I never knew that "How do I love thee?" was Dickinson.
It wasn't.

How did I manage to mishear "Browning" as "Dickinson"? Derp.

Should someone try to come up with a mixed drink with Crown Royal called the Gimli Glider?
What about Crown Royal mixed with Royal Crown?

Coryat: $24,000
DDs: 2/3 (just missed Transylvania)
FJ!:  (I was pre-calling mixed drinks of some kind, Cuba Libre, G&T... as it turned out, rye and Coke turned out to be closer than first thought)

Ran Ditloids, ran Fishy Cinema, almost ran "Vel"come.

FJ! was an instaget, though I almost got stuck on Canadian Club. There's no Club Canadian pop brand, but there is/was Clearly Canadian. Either way, got to Royal Crown/Crown Royal before the music.

Isn't that just a rye and RC?

Look in the "Season 34" thread.

Now, the backstory: Back in 2004, Merv Griffin leaked on a talk show that the Ken Jennings streak was about to happen but gave no further details. For the next six weeks the Sony boards tongue-wagged at every single strong debut, thinking they may be witnessing the start of the great streak. "Nerdly Factoid" was the nickname given to the as-yet-unknown champion.
This is awesome. I'm guessing if Ken ever heard of this he'd proudly own the nickname.
I suspect he did. As I recall, it was Rick Knutsen (posting as ricfran) who came up with the name.

Just bet 4,000 for each 10,000 of your score

Interesting that both Farhad and Angela also underwagered by about 5% - 10%. No reason for Farhad to wager any less than 6999 and Angela any less than 7001.

For me, it was sketchy Time Warner satellite reception causing constant screen/audio freeze. I must have missed at least five clues in their entirety.
Not sure if I got any other lach trash besides Jeff Lynn.

At first I approached FJ from the Canadian Whiskey end, and couldn't come up with anything, so I went at it from the cola end. When I got to RC, I remembered this commercial and song, and voila!

Funny how I've been aware of RC Cola all these years, but never curious enough to find out what RC stood for. I went "Dr. Pepper,"

I got to Crown Royal but my first thought was Seagram's Seven (Crown).

I'm glad I wasn't on the show because my answer of "What is Pu Neves?" looks pretty dumb
Same here. The best guess I could come up with was "Teid Bat" (knowing full well that it's just called Tab).

It has been said by a couple of posters that Farhad's silly bet on the last DD didn't matter because of the two triple stumpers at the end. This is not quite true. An adept would, after doubling or nearly doubling if they want to reserve a pittance to hang for FJ, know they had to ring on the last clue and take a stab at the reed instrument. There aren't that many of them. Not that Farhad was likely to recognize that necessity.

Serious question: Have silly non-covering bets from the lead become common enough that second should routinely go all in?

Well, this game was a breath of fresh air after a painful few this past week. Betsy does look strong though that FJ wager did leave me scratching my head and backing the DVR up to recheck that there wasn't some exotic meta-bet st work there. Hopefully. It was just a math error.

It seems that way, doesn't it? :? You know, I might sound overly cynical here, but between 2nd and 3rd being limited to $2k and $1k, respectively, and the show not covering travel expenses, I wonder if people are chickening out and betting to protect second place, just to be sure they won't lose money on the trip to LA. I have been amazed, though, by the recent trend of leaders not even coming close to covering an all-in bet from second.

This would have been a great game for me; that ditloid category was a giveaway, and there were a couple of other surprisingly easy categories. The final was an insta-get for me… apparently I spend too much time in liquor stores and drank too much RC as a kid.

Yes, Ken first appeared on the Sony board, as I recall, early in his run, and admitted to having been lurking a while.

Now thats good trivia. Might have to get some for the pouch :p

Instaget FJ. Have only heard the name Crown Royal but luckily there are only 3 colas. 4 if you count Tab.
