"A Visit to Culver City": A holiday poem
‘Twas the day of my taping, and through the green room
All the creatures were stirring, cameras would roll soon!
The players were chosen by Maggie with care
It was me and another who’d go and play there!
The others were settled with waiting instead
While visions of victory danced in their heads
So Kate in her pantsuit and I in my vest
Were facing the champ, whose brain was the best?
When out on the set, it sounded like a party
It was just Johnny Gilbert saying “This is Jeopardy!”
This was it! ‘Twas the start of my moment of fame
Remember to smile when he says your name!
The set looked so big, yet so tiny as well
Just how will I do? Wait – for time, it will tell
Then what to my wondering eyes should arise
But a giant game board with six categories
And here comes the host, so wise and in check
I knew in a moment it must be Trebek
He welcomed us all and then started the game
And he whistled as he called out the subjects by name:
“ABE LINCOLN, GREEK CITIES, THE BIBLE, and then
WILL SHAKESPEARE, IN VENICE, and CROSSWORD CLUES “N”!
Those are the subjects, hey they could be worse!
You start us off champ, yes, you select first!”
The game had begun, and the champ, he was smart
He was out in the lead, an awesome head start
But then, our champ, he had got into trouble
It was I who had hit the first Daily Double!
“How much are you risking?” the host then did prod
“I’ve wanted to say this: ‘I’ll blow the whole wad!’”
The clue was a doozy, but using my head
I’d answered correctly, now I’m out ahead!
It was now time for ads, and a break was allowed
While Alex cracked jokes and talked with the crowd
But soon we were back, he was talking to us
Kate spoke of her travels, and how they got lost
I spoke of my hobbies, what’s keeping me sane
While the champ mentioned that he came out here by train
The rest of the round, it was naught but a flurry
I was slightly behind, had to catch up in a hurry!
Another break followed, to gather my wits
I hope that the next round will not be the pits
The cameras start rolling, the board was revealed
The subjects were good! In my knowledge field!
I got back ahead, my score it did fly
My buzzer speed quickened, my thumb was quite spry
The champ, in the meantime, had entered depression
He forgot to respond in the form of a question!
The end of round buzzer says the game’s nearly done
Just Final is left, it was a tough one
It’s not just the question that I have to know
But also the wager, how much should I blow?
I risked just enough that I thought was allowed
With a wager that would make even Bob Shore proud!
The last clue revealed, a real instaget!
I hope no one else knows the answer just yet!
And when all the answers and scores were all done
I couldn’t believe it, I’d actually won!
And I heard Alex say, as the credits did roll
Happy Christmas to all, and may you get The Call!
All the creatures were stirring, cameras would roll soon!

Re: "A Visit to Culver City": A holiday poem
This was an annual holiday offering from me on the old board that I first posted on Christmas Eve, 2009. I was afraid that it was gone forever and I couldn't remember the wording, but some looking around on archive.org finally gave me the text. Instead of waiting until Christmas Eve to bump/post it, I figured I'd post now, as an early holiday present to my boardie friends (and who knows if I'll find it again in a week's time?)
I hope you enjoy, and I hope that Santa leaves The Call under your tree sometime this year.

Annual holiday bump. Best wishes to all for a happy 2013, and may those still to get The Call know that joy this year.
(And, yes, when I saw the categories in the Jeopardy! round on December 7, I remembered this poem.)

Another bump for the holidays.
Thank you to everyone who made this board so amazing this year. And, again, may Santa Claus leave The Call under your tree this year for those who have not received it yet.

Annual holiday bump.
I have been so honoured to be a part of the Jeopardy! community this year, and all the best for 2015. And, for my fellow ATBs, may Santa leave The Call under your tree this year.
(And, yes, if I had composed this poem more recently, I would have substituted Keith Williams' name for Bob Shore's near the end (it scans better too), but such is life.)

Back at you, DHK! (again, with the proviso that we don't end up in the Green Room on the same date. One January 26th is enough. )dhkendall wrote:Annual Christmas Eve bump

Four years later and still just a dream. Sigh. May 2016 be the year you actually see that jolly canuck. And not just because you gave up and went to a taping.

Annual holiday bump.
Best of the season to all boardies, who have indulged my fandom of this excellent show; as well to those at Jeopardy! Productions who make it all possible.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year to my J! family. May 2017 be the year of The Call for David, H-Bomb and any others who are waiting with bated breath.
Sprinkles are for winners.
