CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Robert Barron is a teacher from Columbia, South Carolina, whose history students get a kick out of your name when you're discussing what era?
Robert: The Gilded Age. They come across the term "robber baron" when they read, and that sounds a lot like my name. And since I teach U.S. history, they think that's funny.
Alex: You're teaching some strange kids.
Alex: Emily Dumas from Somerville, Massachusetts. You and your sister have a podcast.
Emily: We do.
Alex: About...
Emily: It's about '80s and '90s movies that touched our childhood.
Alex: Name some that touched your childhood.
Emily: Okay, well, the one we just did. We had our 50th episode, pretty big deal--
Alex: Wait a minute. 50th episode?
Emily: Yeah. We've done 50 in under a year, and we did The Goonies, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. [Imitates Sloth] "Hey, you guys!"
[Laughter]
Alex: You and your sister are kind of weird.
Emily: Ah, maybe.
Alex: Austin Rogers is our champ. He's a bartender. Plays fantasy baseball. Why baseball?
Austin: Ah, well, I like baseball because there's a lot of statistics in it, and I like getting in-depth with the players. And there's 162 games. You can keep losing and end up winning at the end.
Alex: Okay.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Austin found the Daily Double on the 24th clue. Austin had $3,400, Emily had $600, and Robert had a deficit with -$200. Austin made it a True Daily Double, wagering $3,400.
HIGH ABOVE THE EARTH $600: Remeasured by the USGS in 2016 at 20,310 feet
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
CLASSIC MOVIE LINES $600: "I happen to have Mr. McLuhan right here"
IPOs $800: Drop the last 4 letters from the name of the app to get this company, the big IPO story of March 2017
IPOs $1000: The one of the 3 main consumer credit reporting bureaus that does not begin with "E", it raised $664 million in 2015
DEEP UNDERGROUND $800: The cave seen here and its rough stalactites were formed as the result of the solidification of this
(Austin: What is limestone?)
LET'S PLAY CHESS $400: If an identical position occurs 3 times in a game, a player may claim this result, then go kiss his sister
LET'S PLAY CHESS $600: A tactic via which one piece attacks 2 opposing ones is called this, like a common dining utensil
LET'S PLAY CHESS $800: Trading a knight or bishop for one of these more valuable pieces is known as winning the exchange
(Austin: What is a queen or king? Uh, queen, please.)
LET'S PLAY CHESS $1000: Descriptive notation like P-Q4 has been largely replaced by this "mathematical" kind, which would say simply d4
(Robert: What are coordinates?)
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Austin: $11,000
Emily: $600
Robert: -$600

Well, looks like KARE is showing the wrong episode (from Thursday the 21st, not the 28th). Time to go to Reddit.

Re: Thursday, September 28 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
That was a nice Guinness presentation to Johnny between the DJ! and FJ! rounds.
Of course Emily just had to find DD3 to keep viewers from seeing what Austin would have wagered in that situation. 36200 is a huge payday while it could have been over 50K if Austin had played all the DDs.
A miss for me on the FJ! clue as I did nothing right. Even though the category was THE NORTHEASTERN U.S. I narrowed my search to ME, NH, VT, RI, CT, and MA making it a New England focus only.
The second mistake I made was thinking “joined” was pointing to some kind of hyphenated city. State by state I looked for such an occasion and got nowhere trying to make Concord-Lexington or New-Port etc. work. I scribbled Portsmouth at the end to have something on my paper.
Yes, I’ve seen Welcome Back, Kotter more than once, with this in the show’s opening.
At least I was home playing. On stage? No sleep.

Re: Thursday, September 28 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Austin was in the rare position of being able to Clavin a DJ round DD and still be in the lead if he got it wrong.
FJ was a little confusing but I also got it thanks to a certain old TV show.

I knew Brooklyn in that "I heard this somewhere once, and it stuck, but I'd never be able to remember where" sort of way.

Re: Thursday, September 28 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Austin has been a really good player so far, but I see two weaknesses, one of which may jump up to bite him eventually. 1, he plays from the top of the category down. 2, he likes to show off, such as William Tecumseh Sherman. Congrats on knowing his full name when simply saying Sherman will suffice to garner the money. At some point he'll screw up the non-essential information making his answer incorrect.

Would've offered up Minneapolis or Dallas in Final, certain both were wrong. But Horshack would've gotten it in a heartbeat.

Well, that was a beatdown. 11k to 600 to -600 is one of the most brutal J! rounds I've seen in ages. I approve
Total kids week FJ. OK maybe not. I'm biased. Shut up

Matt Jackson in S32 had a couple of J! rounds with big leads with an assist by the DD:

Instaget FJ for me; as a New Yorker, I've read a lot about the history of my city, and the 1898 date for the merger has long been burned into my brain. I also remember the famous sign from the Welcome Back, Kotter intro. I'll be interested to see how this polls, since early posts show some non-NYers correctly solving it.
Congrats to Johnny Gilbert on the Guinness honor. And he doesn't look anywhere near his age. Clearly, doing what he loves has helped keep him young.
Austin's Coryats his first three games:
$15,400
$16,400
$17,400
That's a nice progression. His only weakness is occasionally being undisciplined and making incorrect guesses. But that is far overshadowed by his knowledge base, his buzzer skill, and his ability to play the game. E.g., his $3,400 TDD in the SJ round, where most contestants would have wagered something like $1,000 or $2,000, helped him take a huge lead going into DJ -- which has to have a demoralizing effect on his opponents.
It's definitely time to start feeling bad for Tim Kutz.

Way to give a FJ clue about New York City to the guy from New York City.

Could Austin be the noted poster Austin Powers from this board?
