Ouch on Ryan negging on clue 30 to take himself out of the FJ! round.

The clue brought back memories of previous discussions of podium vs. lectern or my solution after tiring of the back-and-forth by using the term “podiern.”

A miss for me on the FJ! clue as I spent the entire think time only considering guys in Europe. My bad as the clue has enough to figure where to go. Instead I was stuck thinking WWII era and matched Amy.

I have no knowledge for how long or how short Austin’s stay on the show will be, but from one of the S34 “Who Will It Be?” promo spots there are a couple of things probably serve as an indication. It’s in a spoiler, so your choice to look or not, although it’s not a dead giveaway of anything. It could be meaningless and unrelated to Austin’s run or it could be directly related.

My spoilersh opinion:

I think both are part of Alex’s preamble to two different shows and both are with Austin at the champ’s spot. If Alex starts the show and does not have outfit #1 or outfit #2 on then Austin is going to win that game. The earliest Austin will lose is not until each of the above remarks by Alex with corresponding outfit occur.
If Austin happens to lose in the game when Alex invokes the name of KJ then it will be the host’s fault.

I can't decide if it's terrifying because he *could* have blown his win with a wrong answer (had she wagered differently)...

... or if the final total is just ... "nice".

Amy thinks she can't win unless she bets big. With Ryan out Amy thinks there is no penalty for betting it all. Austin thinks the clue will be a double get or a double miss and expects Amy to bet it all. Or Austin really really likes 20th CENTURY WORLD LEADERS? Or Austin wants to go big or go home? When was the last time Roger Craig checked in here? At this point he should be sitting up.

I think this should now be added as part of the Jeopardy! record books...for most money earned on a FJ! wager. It's crazy. I'm not sure what zerobandwidth's reaction is like when he sees this.

We should have more games where Alex dispenses with the preamble to get more clues in. :)

Just when I was wondering why Austin's DD wager in the Venus category was so . . . Venusian :D by his previous standards, he goes and makes an FJ wager far beyond the cover bet that most of us were probably expecting. It was even a little reckless in that it exposed him to a loss in the event of a double-stumper if Amy didn't go all-in. But then again, he's now 6 for 6 on FJ's so he probably wasn't taking much of a risk. :) He's also 12 for 13 on DD's. And his Coryat was $23,800, following a $23,600 in Monday's game. In other words, Austin is playing at a very high level in all phases of the game. The Jeopardy! Fan now gives him an astonishing 60.14% chance of winning a total of at least 11 games, and assesses his average expected number of wins as 15. If he loses on or before November 3, I think I would have him as a platinum in the TOC. :)

Like MarkBarrett, I got stuck in Europe on the FJ, but I went with De Gaulle rather than Churchill. Once Alex started his explanation in the reveal, I knew who we were going to end up with.

Minor quibble: Austin was credited with "Mons Olympus" for "Olympus Mons" as the famous Martian volcano. I've only ever heard it as Olympus Mons. Does flipping the words make a material difference? Would it be like calling a certain Earthly peak "2K" or "Austen-Godwin"?

I was probably part of that debate, I have a reputation in my Toastmasters club for being a stickler on the terms “lectern” and “podium” (a podium is something you stand on, hence the root related to “podiatrist”) and I’m famous for that peeve there. Although perhaps mentioning it again has opened up the debate anew.

This is pretty much my view too. It seems apparent that Austin is The Prophesied One - although Doubting Thomas me won’t be 100% convinced until the first of those clips airs during an Austin game. I also think Alex has a habit of a) anointing “the next Ken Jennings” early in a run (say 8-10 games in (yeah I know you’re saying “8-10 games is early in a run?” but it would be if they were indeed the next Ken (or even had half Ken’s games)) and b) having said announcement (he’s done it before, I think Matt Jackson was one recipient) be the kiss of death, the recipient losing shortly thereafter. This is why I don’t think his run will go much long past Alex’s comparison, and that his comparison will come soon.
"Jeopardy! is two parts luck and one part luck" - Me

"The way to win on Jeopardy is to be a rabidly curious, information-omnivorous person your entire life." - Ken Jennings

During the FJ commercial break I turned to my friend and said "I wonder if he'll bet big, like 15 grand or so"....clearly I need to dream bigger  Funny thing is, I was thinking he bet too small on his DDs and could've had a lock, but of course a lock wouldn't have let him do THAT.

Took a few seconds to decide that war didn't fit the quote, then apartheid came to mind and I was home free.

Welcome to the ranks of the superchampions, Austin, emphasis on super. WOW.

I yelled chips and fondue at seeing that wager, except it wasn't chips and fondue.

ETA: Not really, but that wager was insane. Sort of makes sense in retrospect. He's already won a lot of money, a spot in the TOC. Only thing lost with an incorrect Final in this case is more money, even if it is a lot of money.

Amy was a very strong player. Against anyone else, I could see her being a multi-day champion easily.

I love Austin. This is an exciting season. Glad I started watching again.

I said in yesterday's thread that I was excited to see what he could do for an encore.. Ha. I am absolutely floored. Austin has taken home ~$134K in the last two games.. record by a fair margin. What an incredible performance (again!) against a good player in Amy.. keeping it a game into Final.

Feeling very bad right about now for the poor saps in the audience who had to watch the last two days and then have to march on stage against the animal.

Compared to the most of the rest of this field... hell yeah. Still.. something keeps telling me he may not be this giant lock/favorite we're ready to anoint him as. I love Austin and he's probably the best player we've seen Matt Jackson two years ago. But something is bound to go wrong eventually with his extreme risk-averse style. It worked for Roger Craig, but.. I won't believe it until I see it.
